Following problems with 20305 the trains formation was changed at Bristol West departing at 17:38 formed 20305 + 20302 + 73209 + 20301 + 20304, passing Ashley Hill at 17:42 and being later reported passing East Usk at 21:50 with the Class 73 removed, heading towards Gloucester . Two KPA barrier bogie tank wagons VTG85936 and VTG85933 departed on the rear, having arrived marshalled between the Class 73 and 20302 on arrival in Temple Meads . GBRf had been given 10 days notice to establish a new South Wales scrap metal operation with driver route learning using the Class 20s from the Birmingham area taking in Snow Hill, Rowley Regis and Handsworth (also see Gloucester notes & news section). A 0X74 16:30 Eastleigh - Barton Hill light loco move was formed with: 66115 + 66057 + 66117 + 66098 + 66096 being recorded in Temple Meads at 19:15. Also, earlier, the previous day’s railtour stock was noted being shunted at 12:45 with 66127 before departing as 5Z29 13:00 to Eastleigh via Bath and Westbury and HST power car 43097 was visible near the wheel lathe with a sheeted over cab having been damaged towards the end of 2010 following a collision with a tree on the Berks & Hants route.

Over at Barton Hill, coaches 9527 and 5998 were stabled in the car park siding with a rake of six other coaches alongside the Voyager shed with only 6066 and 5984 being identified. All were carrying the former Anglian livery.

A second report from Ashley Hill just before the 6V20 appeared was at 17:33 with an unidentified Hanson Class 59/1 heading towards Stapleton Road on a autoballaster and ballast cleaning train, believed heading for Westbury.

31/12 At around 01:30, a serious fire was started in the Gloucester station ticket office which caused around £300,000 of damage. A temporary portakabin was set up to deal with tickets and information and a 17 year old youth was later arrested by BT Police suspected of arson.

02/01 Colas 66841 + 66844 were noted during the late morning passing Gloucester OZ55 light-engine to Llanwern. The locos were for use on Dollands Moor steel trains departures, one later in the day and the second over the following day (also see Bristol TM, Barton Hill and Kingsland Road notes & news).

07/01 DRS 66416 was on 6Z90 Stockton - Cardiff Tidal scrap empties.

A path via Bristol Parkway and Day’s curve was also initially available as passing Yate at 14:03, Bath 15:31 and Chippenham 16:03.

31/01 20305 + 20302 + 20303 were all present stabled at Gloucester station having arrived here from Bristol late during the previous day for GBRf driver area route learning (also see Bristol TM, Barton Hill and Kingsland Road notes & news). The fourth arrival, 20304 was already out on training duties being booked to run Gloucester - Bristol Parkway - Cardiff - Birmingham - Gloucester . The loco was to fail however at Cardiff !

Also noted during the late afternoon were: 57601 + 57005 + 47237 (ex. store at Gloucester , another former Advenza loco) + c/stock: 94101 + 47500 which all departed at 17:40 for Carnforth (also see Cardiff notes & news).

A second Colas loco 66844 had earlier also run light from Washwood Heath - Llanwern reception sidings (reported Cheltenham at 11:48) in readiness to work the first of a new export steel service destined for North-east France.

04/01 An unidentified FLHH Class 66 ran 0Z70 Stoke Gifford sidings - Newport docks in readiness to shunt the latest batch of new Class 70s on arrival.

05/01 The Beluga Endurance was seen to be berthed in its normal position within Newport docks with 70008 - 70012 on board following arrival from the United States .

06/01 Disaster on the dockside! The final loco to be off-loaded, 70012 was reported as dropped from around 15 ft back onto the ship. A HSE investigation followed and various rumours were circulating regarding the mainframe and cab damaged loco’s future. Sources suggested the loco would be collected by the same ship on return from another European port call and taken back to the United States for component recovery where a new 70012 will be built. Nothing had however been confirmed by the end of January. On the mainline, Colas 66841 ran 0Z66 Llanwern - Ashford light-engine.

Portbury branch line

22/12 During the afternoon, an unidentified FLHH Class 66 was noted stabled in the cripple siding with 3 coal wagons. A DBS coal service was also being loaded at the same time.

Locos recorded on coal duty during the review period have included: 66014/063/069/083/085/133/140/185/188. 66512/522/554/555/556/597/599/952

Yate

After public pressure, over a period of four months, vandalised panels on the station’s waiting shelters have been replaced. The Friends of Yate Station group suggested the missing panels be replaced with plastic screens containing internal metal mesh to make them stronger, but First/GW initially stated this would be too costly. Repairs were however, completed by the end of January.

PRESERVATION & INDUSTRIAL MATTERS

West Somerset Railway

16/12 The concluding sea defence stone workings (also see February 2011 Magazine) over the line continued with 66089 handling today’s working.

17/12 66018 worked the day’s train. It was also interesting to note that FLHH 66597 was also in use at Norton Fitzwarren on a 6Y25 waste spoil working for the railway’s new ‘triangle’ project close to the mainline junction.

20/12 The final working of the series, again with 66018 in charge was terminated at Taunton Fairwater yard due to heavy snow fall along the Minehead branch line.

22/12 66018 completed the final train’s diagram from Taunton Fairwater - Minehead, being later noted leaving Williton at 15:30 on the return.

02/01 To mark the 40th Anniversary of the closure of the line to passenger trains, the WSR along with First/GW which provided unit 150234, ran a 2Z10 Exeter St. David’s - Minehead (10:40 off Taunton) and 2Z11 15:15 return.

A points problem at Norton Fitzwarren on the inward working saw the train run to Wellington and reverse for a further reverse at Norton Fitzwarren to gain access to the branch, the return departing Minehead at 15:07 (8 early).

Also active during the day, along the line was Hymek D7017, running with changed numbers to D7047 (and carrying a 8V03 headcode) this being in charge of another train which operated along the branch on 02/01/71 to collect wagons and some equipment prior to closure.

Portbury Dock

27/12 Ex. Turkey 8Fs Nos: 45166 and 45170 arrived on the Grimaldi Line vessel Grande Scandinavia (from Izmir ), having been exported abroad by the War Department in the 1940s. Once unloaded on 04/01, the locos were both initially expected to be moved on 07/01 destined for preservation at Barry (45170) and Morpeth, via display at the NRM Shildon (45166), but the eventual moves actually took place on 14/01 and 18/01, although which loco departed on which date remains unconfirmed.

The locos had arrived chained on to a container type steel base with their tenders separate. Two other 8Fs, Nos: 45153 and 45165 are reported to still be in Turkey and will hopefully eventually follow for preservation in Britain .

Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway

21/01 A second landslide on the line close to Winchcombe station at a location called ‘Chicken Curve’ has caused severe disruption. Fund raising is under way towards repair. It is hoped a passenger service will be introduced on the recently restored northern section towards Broadway so a passenger service can still be maintained over part of the line.
