Concerns have been raised, with climate change of the possible flooding on the
low-lying Gloucester - Severn Tunnel junction railway and the main A48 road
transport links. Steps are being taken at 'danger spots' on the A48 road such as
Newnham-on-Severn but the local district council are unhappy that no work is to
take place in protecting the important railway line. The Environment Agency will
be contacted with a request to improve their Severn Estuary Shoreline Management
Plan which is being drawn up to protect land from the River Severn for the next
100 years. The multi million pound scheme will build up defences on the 18 mile
shoreline between Minsterworth and Chepstow, with particular attention taking
place at Newnham and planned water retreats at Awre and Woolaston where few
buildings are present.

FREIGHT REVIEW
Hello, and welcome to another little glimpse into the freight side of the railways. Starting on 24th April and a day at Peterborough - it was a Saturday and a couple of fellow enthusiasts were having a trip over so I decided to join them. Not a busy day for freight, but there were a few and there were plenty of locos parked about the yard area. Locos noted on the way in were 66166, 66714, 66721, 66722, 66719, 66200, 66074, 66057 and 66130. The freight noted were as follows: 66538 with the following train in tow: 640288/ 287/ 375/ 376/ 277/ 278/ 475/ 476/ 049/ 050, 608361/ 7041/ 7183/ 8362/ 8017/ 8018, 641051, 33.68.4943.091/ 093, 33.68.4909.770. Another Freightliner then followed with 66593+66569 at the head and the following consist: 606157/ 158, 608019/ 006/ 394/ 320/ 200/ 507/ 424/ 7072/ 087/ 8423/ 533/ 060/ 323/ 404, 640034/ 033, 33.68.4943.065, 33.68.4909.450. This was followed by 66109 on the Plasmor service consisting of the following vehicles: 5422, 5269, 5289, 5284, 5425, 4675, 5428, 5281, 4694, 5432, 5282, 4688, 5421, 5439, 4693, 4685, 5271, 4679, 5270, 5419, 4682, 5272, 4676, 5285. A couple of other container workings were noted heading by 66106 and 66565 respectively but, due to my location on the station, vehicle identification was not possible. Incidentally, there was a charter service noted that day headed by 37059+20305 on the front and 37423 on the rear. For those interested, the stock was as follows: 99680, 3115, 99348, 1861, 5419, 5478, 99328, 4940, 4960, 4984 and 9440 -- a motley collection if ever there was one! Moving forward now to 27th April and I was spending five days at Christchurch in Dorset visiting my sister, so decided to have a few hours at Eastleigh -- in fact only about three hours (11.15 to 14.15) -- but it was a busy period. Noted first was 66558 on the following Freightliner: 608504/ 145, 92615, 640195/ 196, 93469, 608175/ 176/ 151/ 152, 640161/ 162. Next up was 66115 with the following MoD working: 95502, 95523, 95575, 95288, 95547, 95514, 95273, 95286. The Hanson/Mendip Rail service from Botley was next to be noted hauled by 59004, consisting of: 3268, 3975, 3967, 3952, 3946, 3917, 3900, 3959, 3305, 3303, 3295, 3315, 3291, 3982, 3985, 3961. The shunter on this particular day was 08904 and the first rake of wagons it appeared with consisted of: 110375, 979078, 979057, 979058 and 979082 - a partial rake of welded rail carriers - 110375 was a rather interesting vehicle being an OBA Chute Wagon consisting of machinery for moving the welded rail from their vehicles. The 08 then appeared with 380503/ 612/ 610/ 611/ 539, 12952/ 76/ 81/ 52/ 93, 32.70.5892.027/ 021 in tow! Another MoD working then passed into the yard headed by 66069 with the following train: 610081/ 82/ 97/ 98, 93483, 95263, 95260 -- the 08 shunted four-wheel tanks 56139, 56131 and 56039 on to the rear of this working before it continued it's journey north. Yet another MoD working quickly appeared with 66050 in charge, with the following consist: 610220/ 219/ 329/ 330/ 113/ 112/ 021/ 022. Not too far behind was 66150 with a Southampton-bound container service utilising the following vehicles: 609022/ 069/ 089/ 084/ 025/ 075/ 028/ 081/ 094/ 032/ 082/ 093/ 085, 610088/ 087/ 021/ 022/ 039/ 040. The movements continued with 66193+66085 on the following Engineers' train: 29124/ 028/ 495/ 011/ 354/ 329/ 098/ 152/ 472/ 079/ 141/ 163/ 334/ 335/ 278/ 338/ 013, 996446, 996554, 996692, 996612, 396143, 391509, 394989 -- fortunately the train passed through quite slowly into the yard heading north! Another Engineers' service was next headed by 66050 -- returning south after taking one of the MoD trains into the yard. This time heading round the Portsmouth line with the following: 500119/ 104/ 070/ 055/ 127/ 084, 182, 086. A Freightliner service then appeared with 66558 at the head, with the following vehicles: 640402/ 401/ 191/ 192, 606137/ 138/ 134/ 133, 608219/ 220/ 117/ 118/ 131/ 132, 93427, 93295, 92561, 97755/ 28 / 22/ 37/ 59. The final freight I noted was 66006 with the following three vehicles in tow: 500358/ 354, 32.70.5892.025. Quite a busy period and well worth the effort. Noted at Southampton Maritime en route were Freightliner locos 08745, 08545 and 66543. There was a third 08 but this was parked behind a wall so was not identified. A couple of days later 66551 was noted passing through Poole at 1540 with the empty Freightliner Heavy Haul aggregate vehicles heading for Wool, between Wareham and Dorchester. And finally for this effort on 5th May whilst having my lunch break at work by Humberstone Road yard, 20905+20901 top and tailed with 20142+20189 were noted passing southbound with the Underground stock movement train. Cracking sight! That's it for this time. Have fun until next time!!
MISCELLANEOUS
Keynsham Station
Following a six year town council driven campaign, an agreement has been reached
to construct a disabled access ramp on the down-side of the station. A First GW
funded scheme for the station last year was rejected by the Department for
Transport who will now provide the £100,000 needed following the resubmission
of the plans. £50,000 is also to be provided by the Bath & North-East
Somerset Council and £50,000 from First/GW to go with the £200,000 raised by
the campaign group towards the project.
Toton
It is reported that land opposite the depot has been sold for the building over
the next 5 years, of 5,000 eco homes and a link road 'flyover'. In the current
approach road area, five of the seven terraced houses as well as the scrap yard
have been purchased and land around the wagon repair depot which is also sold,
has already been cleared. Once the remaining two homeowners have sold up, the
whole area will be completely cleared and redeveloped. The road entrance into
the depot at this location will also close.

No.34 Portbury (AE 1764/17) was seen on a passenger train from the Industrial
Museum near the Create Centre on the former Wapping Wharf branch at 13:00. It is
reported that the newly refurbished museum
(to be known as the 'M Shed') with the building work completed, will be handed
over in early July, the work which is understood to be substantially over
budget, costing £26 million. A new rapid transport 'bendy bus' stop is expected
to be added at this location at a later date.
