08/11 Electronic ticket gates were
brought into use in the ticket hall. Anyone accessing the station from the car
park had their ticket checked (or was sold one) by staff on the footbridge. The
gates had many people flummoxed, with passengers standing in front of them
bemused as to how they operate! Fortunately, ATW staff were on hand to show them
what to do. The gates also caught quite a number of people who arrived on trains
without a ticket and expected to walk out of the station having had a free
journey! Two new ticket machines have been installed in the ticket hall,
accepting coins, notes and cards. Despite these, the ticket office windows were
considerably busier than normal! (Note – the barrier staff seemed happy to
allow free access to the platforms for the “spotters”!)

worked 1Z37 09:46 Cardiff-Rhymney special with 37411 in British railways green
at the rear. The
stock was four Arriva liveried Mk2s which had been used on the Settle &
Carlisle line and equipped with blue star through multiple wiring and an air
control pipe, which allowed locos to work trains on a push/pull basis. Staff
at Canton C.S. had re-commissioned the system, so both locos were under the
control of the driver. The train ran non-stop Cardiff Central to Caerphilly,
where it stopped for 10 mins to allow the leader of Caerphilly County Council,
Councillor Harry Andrews, to name 37425 Pride
of the Valley” and Tony Payne, the CADW custodian of Caerphilly Castle
to name 37411 Caerphilly Castle.
This plate had brass
lettering, reminiscent of a GWR nameplate. The
smart appearance of both locos was a credit to EWS. The train then continued
non-stop to Rhymney, with an At Seat Catering trolley serving refreshments to
the invited guests. It
returned from Rhymney as 1Z58 11:14 Rhymney-Cardiff, but operated as a service
train calling at all stations, as the timetabled service had been cancelled to
accommodate it. Acceleration
away from station stops was rapid, with a total of 3500hp on tap! Prior to its
naming, 37411 had worked 2F06 (with the nameplates covered) and it also worked

Unable to ID
about 10 trains between 01.00. and 06.00. due to signalman allowing trains to
pass side by side and also crossing at same time, plus a case of intermittent
lack of attention from the observer (try doing a 5-day trip with only one night
in a guest house during a cold November spell) in the car park.
