07/05 The Avonmouth (Bennett's)-Ketton coal ran on both Tuesday and Friday this week, 66159 being the loco used today.

09/05 New signalling was commissioned from this date between Charlton tunnel and Shirehampton. This was put in place for the diversions due to the Filton junction blockade during June, all being fitted with the new TPWS equipment for passenger workings. The junction at Hallen Marsh is once again through signalled, for the first time since January 1988 when all the remaining semaphore signals and signal boxes were removed and the Henbury freight line from Parkway and the Severn Beach line were worked separately.

Locos recorded on coal duty during the month included;- 66046/051/088/099/140/159/182/229. 09003 still remained the area pilot. An interesting freight movement via the 6M33 from Massey Wilcox on the Chittening Estate (now called the Century Park!) during the month was four consignments of conductor rail for use on the new East Berlin metro.

Bristol Parkway

01/05 Pathfinder's 'Buxton Rotator' (1Z40 04.17 Yeovil junction-Buxton and 14.00 1Z41 return) was worked by Fragonset 33 103+33 202 with 60 060 assisting in top n'tail mode in the Buxton area. Pathfinder's last 'Avon Branchline explorer' (1Z40 15.02 Bristol TM-Tytherington and 1Z41 16.40 return) of the day was in trouble on arrival at the quarry where the steam loco 5029 Nunney Castle stalled and required assistance from 66244 which had ran light-engine from Barton Hill depot. The Class 66 pushed the ten-coach train and steam loco into the quarry before hauling it back to Temple Meads, 90 minutes down, the steamer still being attached to the rear. During the evening, 66068 was stabled in the up loop, on a PW train alongside the mail depot.

The coaching stock used was returned by Royal 67005 as a 1Z33 13.04 Cardiff-Crewe 'relief' the following day being routed via Chepstow and Gloucester. The 1Z47 and 1Z45 were originally planned to be hauled by a Riley Class 37 (either 37 197 or 37 261), once these were not available, 47150 then 47 839 were a possibility!

Other special workings during the day operated for the FA Cup final between Manchester Utd and Millwall included 67005+67016 on 1Z35 09.20 Paddington-Cardiff.

Six services this evening starting with 66190 with an empty mgr service to Avonmouth, then 66180 with the Tyne Yard "Boxes", an early run from the "Binliner" with 66548.
