cripple trip, formed of nine HTAs.
20/01 67003 worked the 6H80 cripple trip.
28/01 143613 worked a 5Z55 Temple Meads-Newport and return driver route learning
and filming trip via Avonmouth and the Henbury freight-only line. This was the
first working in preparation for diversions when the Filton junction remodelling
takes place during April and June.
Haulage company Massey Wilcox who operate the only remaining rail sidings on the Chittening industrial estate, are investing in a fleet of container carrying road vehicles and are expected to be extending their rail operation to include container traffic. By the end of the month two warehouses were in the process of being demolished (or refurbished?) possibly to make space for a new container handling area. New 'local' trip freights are to be reintroduced as (all 'Q') 12.14 Newport-Avonmouth (T-FO) and 15.10 Avonmouth-Newport ADJ (TWFO).
Locos recorded on coal duty during the month;-
66012/030/033/038/061/065/072/073/086/107/131/147.

Didcot bound were noted. The Serco test 150 DMU passed south-bound at 14.50.
07/01 67007 was in charge of the 1C01 19.35 Penzance-Parkway RMt Tpo and return
1C02 00.55 departure, performing the same duty the next day.
08/01 66160 with 66247 (dead) worked an Avonmouth - Didcot service.
09-10/01 This was the final night of travelling post office operation (TPO)
nationwide. 67021 worked the final 1E94 22.15 service for Low Fell from the bay
platform, leaving to time with the loco horn blaring and detonators exploding.
The inward 1V28 20.24 ex Low Fell arrived during the early morning of the
following day headed by 67023 (90027 having worked this train to Doncaster and
took the 1E94 onwards from here from 67021). Meanwhile the final West of England
TPO again behind 67007 arrived after mid-night and returned west. For the
record, the coaching stock formations were as follows;- 1E94. 94449, 94400,
80349, 80431, 80352, 80346, 94469, 94334. 1V28. 94408, 94478, 80322, 80424,

94540.
12/01 66214 worked an empty MGR for Avonmouth, 66174 worked the MoD Liner and
66091 with the "Fuel Train.
15/01 Seen this evening were the Network Rail HST utilising power cars
43013/014, 66061 with the MoD liner and 66051 with a late running Inter-modal
service heading for South Wales. MGR workings were 66154 with a loaded train
from Avonmouth and 66038 with empties in the reverse direction.
19/01 MGR traffic saw two rakes of empties, 66003 bound for Portbury and 66038
for Avonmouth, and a loaded service from Avonmouth behind 66033. 66107 was on
the MoD liner. The most interesting working was 47727 towing 60093 + 66061 +
67025 + 60025 from south Wales heading eastbound.
20/01 66003, again, with MGR empties for Portbury, 66065 with Avonmouth bound
empties and 66086 working the MoD liner.
22/01 66154 worked a MGR from Avonmouth and 66012 worked in the reverse
direction. Also seen was 66015 working the Tytherington "Stone", 66086
with the MoD Liner.
24/01 60077 was over at Westerleigh on fuel tank duty.
26/01 66086 worked a MGR service from Avonmouth and 66145 worked the Margam -
Fawley empty fuel tanks.
27/01 66086 worked the MoD liner this evening. 67024 arrived during the early
afternoon on a 5Z67 10.12 Washwood Heath-Parkway driver training run formed of
four Res vans. The loco ran-round and returned north, this working having on
previous dates run via Kemble to Swindon and returned north via Oxford.
29/01 60042 was on the 6B13 Robeston-Westerleigh fuel tanks and 67027 worked the
final 1E94, in a four van formation passing Yate at 22.22.
66237 worked a empty MGR to Portbury, 66077 was on the Tytherington
"Stone" train.
31/01 Problems at Wickwar (where recent bank clearance work had taken place) saw
a landslide affecting northbound services. It was reported that the delayed 1E86
14.13 Plymouth-York and 1M50 15.15 Plymouth-Preston Virgin XC voyager services
were joined once the line was reopened and travelled onwards together. Earlier
the yellow Serco HST was in the area working back from South Wales to Swindon at
11.46 and later seen heading north to Derby at 16.48.
All of the above workings were to continue until 31/01 empty, as contracted for
the Royal Mail by EWS, but in four coach formations, i.e. for the first two
trains, with the four non-sorting vans only on each.
News on the Royal Mail depot is that GBRf have requested that Network Rail
retain the site on TOPS for possible future use. The company have shown an
interest in operating a mail service on both the West and East Coast mainline's
using Class 325 parcels units. Other mail 'finals' during the day were, 67008 on
the last 5M61 14.19 Barton Hill-Swansea empty vans and 1M06 14.25
Swansea-Willesden mails. 67019+67015 were paired on the 1M61 18.44
Swansea-Willesden mails, leaving at 21.08, this being one of only a handful of
services to remain until 20/02.
Bristol Temple Meads, Kingsland Road and Barton Hill
01/01 47150 and 66611 stabled at Kingsland Road.
03/01 143617 worked 1E32 10:37 Exeter-Newcastle as far as Temple Meads, where
passengers transferred to a Voyager. Noted running light engines northbound were
67024/027 at 09.10.
05/01 More Voyager set problems, with the 1V29 06.52 York-Plymouth in trouble
with an unspecified fault and stopped at Standish junction and a First/GW HST
set (with power cars 43182+43132) forming the 1M28 17.13 Plymouth-Preston Virgin
XC service, as far as Temple Meads due to Voyager non-availability!
06/01 67027 worked 6H80 10:27 Avonmouth-ADJ.
10/01 Complete with a 'RIP' headboard, 67007 passed through with the last 1C02
00.55 Parkway RMt-Penzance TPO service. It seems strange that Temple Meads lost
it's mail traffic to the then new purpose built depot at Parkway in May 2000,
now all mail by rail was suddenly ending! This train later called at Yatton,
this stop having been only added in the early 1990's to offer a more direct link
with Bristol's Lulsgate airport instead of running mail destined for the West
Country into Bristol for loading and back out by train! At Yatton around 25
people had gathered to witness the last Tpo, to post a letter to receive the
unique postmark on what was the final TPO to run in Britain. As with most other
stations, people were allowed on board the train to have a look and take
photographs. The staff seemed to be in good cheer, despite many of them losing
their jobs from the following week.
12/01 60086 worked the 6C79 Parc Slip-Westbury loaded coal.
13/01 A new empty Res van move, the 5Z65 13.03 Temple Meads-Plymouth ran today
for the first time behind 67011. This working operated until 31/01 to provide
four vans for the 1M65 19.15 Plymouth-Willesden mails.
14/01 The 1V57 11.45 Newcastle-Plymouth Virgin XC Voyager service was terminated
on arrival at 17.15 due to a TPWS fault. The set was returned north. Earlier
SWT's driver route-learner/trainer 159014 arrived at 14.08 on a 5Z97 working
from Salisbury, returning as 5O61 at 14.14. 67011 was again on the 5Z65 13.03
Bristol-Plymouth empty vans.
17/01 Having visited south Wales via Parkway during the morning, the Serco HST
ran the regular 1C00 12.30 Swindon-Taunton and 1B01 14.46 Taunton-Swindon during
the afternoon. The set repeated these duties again on 31/01.
19/01 66113 arrived with the fuel tanks from Westbury, which 67014 was reported
to have tripped to St. Phillips Marsh. This loco later worked the four Res van
5Z65 13.03 departure to Plymouth. Also during the day, 158749 was unusually
employed on the 2F10 13.31 Wessex trains service to Avonmouth and 2F30 14.00
return.
20/01 67003 worked 6H80.

23/01 60018 was on the 6B66 10.45 Westbury-Newport ADJ departmental. Enterprise
service noted southbound at 14.50 behind 66092.
24/01 During the morning, Voyager 220 014 became de-railed whilst exiting Barton
Hill depot for Temple Meads station. Later at 15.45 the following were visible,
37375. 47727. 66006. 67017/018/026. 221105. Resident Class 08, 08896 was
reported to be inside the shed, minus its Stephen Dent nameplates ready to move
to Toton by road for repair.
26/01 Seen at Kingsland Road circa 20.30 were 66549/556/612/614.
28/01 67027 worked the early running 5Z65 vans, later 67018 was recorded with a
return VSOE excursion for Victoria. A southbound departmental service seen at
16.30 with 66053.
29/01 67029 was on the 5Z65.
30/01 159020 was on the SWT driver training run from Salisbury arriving in
Bristol at 14.02. It is reported SWTs are looking to introduce a through
Waterloo-Temple Meads service for the summer timetable. With further mail cuts,
the final short-term 5Z65 13.03 Temple Meads-Plymouth empty Res vans was
double-headed with 67023+67015.
31/01 Strong winds during the day saw the diverted 2G95 Worcester SH-Temple
Meads Wessex trains service hit a fallen tree near Lydney. Visible on Barton
Hill depot during the day were;- 09101. 47727. 67008.
67014. Later during the evening, 66157 worked a 6W60 20.12 Westbury-Parson's

19/01 66171 was on the 4F27 10.25 East Usk-Portbury coal empties.
21/01 66127 was on the 4V03 Washwood Heath-Portbury coal empties, 66135 (26/01),
66248 (27/01), 66244 (29/01) and 66020 (30/01) also being noted on this train,
which forms the 6M04 to Rugeley. The 6X42 17.53 Portbury-Mossend cars restarted
leaving at 18.00, with 66556+66614 and using six green sheeted covered car
carrying wagons for the first time.
27/01 66101 was on the 6F22 Aberthaw coal service.
29/01 66171 was on the 6F22.
By the end of the month, around eight painted Class 390 Pendolino bodies were
