05/02 66021 was reported to have work out on a mid-afternoon train of LPG tanks for Eastleigh.

06/02 66066 arrived during the early afternoon with the 6V16 18.50 (TThO) Middlesborough-Avonmouth fertilisers, running substantially late. The return working is 6E28 18.30 (WFO) to Middlesborough.

07/02 56119 handled the 6C89 09.45 Newport ADJ- Avonmouth trip.

12/02 37402 worked today's 6C89 making a repeat performance two days later. The return 6C90 (booked off at 14.37) on the latter date did not leave until the early evening due to late traffic from the dock (noted at Newport around 20.00).

27/02 56032 returned empty container flats at 11.35 to Newport.

Locos noted on coal duty during recent weeks;-

60018/036/060. 66007/009/011/018/020/028/029/041/051/054/056/078/082/091/094/116/ 66122/125/126/136/144/146/170/174/180/195/201/205/210/225/226/229/ 66244/246.

The local pilot has been replaced, with ex Ferrybridge 08685 (in EWS livery) taking the place of long-term resident 08653. 08685 is fitted with buck-eye couplers to shunt the EWS bogie HTA hoppers. The swap took place on 02/02 when 66054 took 08653 to Stoke Gifford sidings, 08685 is thought to have made the opposite move earlier in the day. A visitor on an unrecorded date during the month was blue-liveried 56006 which work the Bridgwater trip, returning to Avonmouth then running light to Newport.

Bristol Parkway

31/01 58049 worked stone empties to Tytherington at 16.12, returning loaded at 19.57. 47776 took the Swansea portion of the 1V33 15.58 mails ex London onwards to Swansea at 19.33. 47774 worked the 1M61 18.44 Swansea-London mails at 20.24.

01/02 180105 was present 'on test' during the day and A4 60009 Union of South Africa passed late into the evening (with support coach) for Westbury and railtour duty the next day. The steam loco suffered brake problems on the Severn Valley Railway, not leaving Kidderminster until 19.30 (booked time off around 14.00!) A brief visit in during the evening saw Paddington - Swansea services in disarray as result of sets being failed at Parkway. The exact services are not known, but the events were, one arrived late with a defective power car and was taken out of service. The next one arrived with brake problems, taken out of service and stabled on the line to Avonmouth. (Later stabled adjacent to the station to await recovery). The next arrival had been diverted via Bath which shows attempts were made to run a service and minimise delays and that the other failures had occurred after Wootton Basset Junction, so sending other services down this route would only compound the problems already being experienced.

02/02 66054 hauled 08 653 from Avonmouth to Stoke Gifford sidings during the early afternoon. The 08 was to be replaced at Avonmouth by 08685 (see Avonmouth Notes & News).

04/02 A couple of MGRs seen this evening 66089 with empties for Portbury and 66201 with a loaded train from Avonmouth. Margam - Fawley empty tanks also seen headed by 66119. 56119 powered the 6M17 16.47 Newport-Wembley freight returning on the 6V10 22.45 return. This duty is normally worked by a Class 60.

06/02 08653 was still stabled at Stoke Gifford sidings, whilst 66066 headed towards Avonmouth at 15.06, with a late running fertiliser train from Middesborough.

07/02 180104 was recorded 'on test' and the 1V46 York-Swansea Virgin XC HST (43099+43195) was terminated at Derby with brake problems. A loco hauled stock train was prepared, but this was also cancelled! A Class 47+67 combination was seen working the 1C06 13.53 Plymouth-Bristol RMT mails. Emergency repairs in the Severn Tunnel saw the route closed late in the day. HST galore tonight as all Bristol TM - Paddingtons were being diverted due to the landslide in the Keynsham area earlier in the day and that from 19.00 the line had been closed for remedial work to be undertaken. Just two MGRs recorded, 66201 loaded train from Avonmouth and 66064 with empties bound for Portbury. The 21.15 Birmingham service was worked by 143612 in lieu of Cl150/2 or Cl153.

09/02 The Tytherington stone was worked by 66243 leaving the quarry at 11.00 and in the small hours 47780 had worked the 6V36 22.37 Dagenham-Bridgend Ford car parts.

11/02 The wet weather and the resultant flooding of Chipping Sodbury tunnel took its toll on Paddington - Swansea and vice-versa services, with none calling at Parkway, coach transport being used from convenient points for this location. Only north - south workings were operating, VT HSTs and units plus Tytherington Stone train hauled by 66243 and Midlands empty MGR to Portbury behind 66198. The Margam - Fawley "Fuel Train" was seen at Filton Abbeywood powered by 66074.

12/02 Bridgwater - Sellafield flasks ran today using DRS Class 20s, locos being 20308/312. There being no changes to the passenger services as per 11/2. The tunnel remained closed because of flooding all day.

13/02 Western D1015 + 47774 were the first locos to work through Chipping Sodbury tunnel on the 5C37 13.55 Old Oak Common-Bristol Barton Hill vans (being used as a test working for D1015, also see Bristol Notes & News) during the early evening. 47759 later arrived at the railnet depot with the 1V69 mails ex Low Fell.

14/02 Paddington services had returned to normal this evening, just the freight was in decline with only 66195 being noted on MGR empties bound for Portbury.

15/02 47 784 was in charge of the 6V30 22.37 Dagenham-Bridgend Ford parts train during the early hours whilst 66055 was seen on a Tytherington stone train (presumably the North Wales working). 60016 was seen with the 6M17 Newport-Wembley freight which included a TPO van in between two ferry vans.

18/02 Four coal services noted this evening with 66170 and 66011 working empties to Avonmouth and 66041 from Avonmouth plus 66032 with empties for Portbury. Also noted was the Tytherington Stone with 66055 and the "Fuel Train" worked by 66126.

20/02 37419 worked a single TPO van to Barton Hill at 14.39 (possibly the one on the 6M17 from the previous day?). 66015 headed PGA wagons presumed destined for Tytherington at 15.20.

22/02 66048 was seen shunting an inspection saloon at Parkway during the afternoon, this being later collected by the 6V70 (08.57 Cliffe Vale-St.Blazey freight).

23/02 66038 powered a Hertfordshire Railtours 1Z27 07.39 Paddington-Llandridnod Wells excursion during the morning.

24/02 More special passenger working this time for the Tottenham v Blackburn Worthington Cup final at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff were;- 47776 1Z31 08.34 Paddington-Cardiff Central (Pilning 10.44) formed of mainly green (BN96) coaching stock, 47793 1Z82 09.00 Kensington Olympia-Cardiff Central (11.43) formed of mainly blue/grey (BN94) stock and 47786 1Z92 09.43 Paddington-Cardiff Central (12.03) formed of maroon (BN91) stock.

25/02 180105 was again recorded 'on test' at 11.36 and 60073 was today's Tytherington stone loco. 47736 + 47756 top n' tailed a 1Z14 08.00 Derby-Swindon (via Swansea, Bristol Parkway to Swindon) Serco test train. Three freight workings recorded this evening, 56119 worked the Tyne Yard "Boxes", 66173 the Tytherington Stone and 66072 Margam - Fawley "Fuel Train". Passenger services endured disruption and diversions due to two incidents, firstly debris fell onto the line from a bridge in the Chippenham area, so all Paddington/Oxford - Bristol and vice versa were diverted via Parkway resulting in a Thames Turbo being seen 165126. Then flooding hit the westbound line beyond Patchway, resulting in one Paddington - Swansea being terminated and others diverted via Gloucester, as was at least one Portsmouth - Cardiff service. (Other causes for the problems were quoted as track circuit failure - Patchway, axle counter failure - Severn Tunnel and more embankment problems at Saltford)

28/02 Very brief visit this evening and just one freight service seen this being the Avonmouth - Teeside Fertiliser service worked by 66001.

Bristol Temple Meads and Barton Hill

01/02 Problems as a result of adverse weather conditions included a tree over the line near Trowbridge. Problems on the sea wall at Dawlish saw the 1V50 08.40 Glasgow-Penzance terminated at Exeter. 60 018 was recorded in the station area with Hanson stone wagons, reported to be the Wootton Bassett working the reason the train was at Temple Meads was unknown.

02/02 60060 headed the Exeter -Cardiff Tidal sidings scrap service (at 17.30). Earlier the 1S35 Penzance-Edinburgh HST was recorded running 160 minutes late due to a hot-box problem near Newton Abbot.

03/02 At 11.10 the following were visible on Barton Hill depot;- 08904. 66054/506. 67006/007/008/013/020. 220011 whilst at St.Phillips Marsh;- 08 643. 43002/022/041. 165118 were visible. Steam loco 60009 Union of South Africa had remained at Westbury overnight following the working of a Plymouth excursion (organised by Pastime Rail the previous day). The loco was to have run with support coach back to Barton Hill, but had run low on coal! The steamer eventually returned to the Severn Valley Railway as 5Z27 15.15 Westbury-Kidderminster loco and support coach 35405 (Twerton near Bath 15.36).

05/02 Two southbound freights observed today, at 09.20 66204 with coal and at 12.20, 66021 with "Flyash" for Westbury.

07/02 Following the failure of 56119, 47786 hauled the 6C91 08.39 Newport-Bridgwater trip consisting of a single loaded roofing flat. The return 6C92 passed Yatton at 11.52 formed of two empties .A newly named 47 839 'Pride of Saltley' complete with silver buffers, powered the 1V45 09.13 Liverpool-Plymouth. A landslide near Saltford, between the old station site and the tunnel on the up side caused delays to services with single line working introduced. The cutting where the incident occurred had recently been cleared of trees and foliage. An interesting working reported to have taken place in the early hours was that of 67030 on a 6T36 01.00 Newport-Westbury departmental formed of ZKA and ZCA wagons. Westbury "Flyash" noted again today at 14.35 behind one of the few remaining Class 58s in use, 58042. Barton Hill at 21.15 was host to 08904, 66506/545 and 220010.

08/02 Another Class 58 sighting, 58047 with empty Yeoman stone wagons southbound at 16.35 A 0Z77 19.04 St.Phillips Marsh-Laira stock move was formed 43190 + barrier, 47816 worked the 1A28 06.30 Plymouth-Paddington First GW service and 58047 headed the 6C42 17.13 Newport-Westbury departmental service.

09/02 220014 was noted on Barton Hill. 47846 headed the 1A99 Penzance-Paddington sleeper and 66 506 headed the Westbury-Machen ballast. Fragonset 47703 worked the 1V45 09.13 Liverpool-Plymouth service.

10/02 Overnight engineering works at Worle near Weston-super-Mare, saw 6W70 19.06 Westbury-Uphill junction (via Taunton) headed by 60046 (instead of the originally booked 37109), 66243 + 66125 on 7W71 also Westbury-Uphill junction (via Taunton in top'n tail mode) and 6W73 which returned via Taunton having run wrong line from Cogload junction to Uphill junction top n' tailed with locos 66 021 and 66186.

11/02 47816 was again on the 1A28, but failed at Plymouth! An HST set covered the working and 47846 returned the 1C50 15.42 Paddington-Exeter balancing service. 47786 worked the 1M59 09.12 Bristol-Warrington vans. Heavy rain saw flooding at Chipping Sodbury and Flax Bourton (the 1M56 08.40 Penzance-Manchester was unconfirmed as being diverted via Westbury because of this) at the latter the same problem had occurred as in recent years where a small stream overflows onto the footbridge and onto the track on the Nailsea side of the tunnel. A speed restriction was put into force at this location. At Chipping Sodbury the tunnel was eventually closed trains being diverted via Bath. Earlier in the day 56109 had worked the 6C91 08.39 Newport-Bridgwater freight consisting of a single loaded roofing flat (near W-S-M at 10.50).

12/02 20308+20312 headed the 01.08 Crewe-Bridgwater nuclear flasks and 14.29 return. 47 846 was reported on fire near Chippenham with the 1C50 15.42 Paddington-Exeter service. The train was still present very late at 19.00. 66226 noted with a coal service, southbound at 09.30 and noted again in the reverse direction at 18.15.

13/02 Following an engine fault on the first mainline passed Class 52 D1015, Western Champion (see report in last month's magazine) the loco undertook another mainline outing this time with 47774 (switched off inside the Western and stock) on a 9 coach 5C37 13.55 Old Oak Common-Barton Hill RES van train (formed 94422 + 94539 + 94492 + 94208 + 94164 + 94223 + 94468 + 94427 + 80342). The train arrived on the up-through eighty minutes late becoming the first train through Chipping Sodbury tunnel following the closure due to flooding. D1015 was then detached, allowing 47774 to move the vans onwards to Pylle Hill for stabling, before returning as 0C84 (18.40 Barton Hill-Old Oak Common) at 19.06, in fact running without an expected fuel stop on Barton Hill via Bath. On Barton Hill during the evening were 66506 and 66545. Earlier 47832 had powered the First GW 1A28 06.30 Plymouth-Paddington service and 47 774 had worked a 5A24 07.45 Barton Hill-Old Oak Common RES van stock move prior to returning with D1015. Newly named 47805 ' Pride of Toton' headed the 1V48 11.17 Manchester-Bristol and return 1S93 15.35 to Edinburgh.

14/02 60041 noted at 04.41 with a diverted "Murco" oil train as Chipping Sodbury tunnel had yet to re-open following the recent bad weather. 47774+47848 were paired on the 1S48 07.15 Bristol-Glasgow (as far as Birmingham NS). 37419 powered the 6C91 08.39 Newport-Bridgwater freight returning with the 6C92 13.46 return (seen Newport 13.05) formed one empty roofing flat and a ferryvan.

15/02 58043 worked 6B66 10.45 Westbury-Newport ADJ departmental and return 17.13 7C42 return.

16/02 60002 headed the 6C14 Cardiff Tidal Sidings-Exeter Riverside scrap empties. 47813 worked the 1A99 Penzance-Paddington sleeper. Overnight engineers trains saw 66001 with 6W85 Westbury-Worle junction, 60063 with 6W86 also Westbury-Worle junction, 58031 on 6W88 Westbury-Bridgwater and 58049 on 6W87 also Westbury-Bridgwater. All trains ran via Taunton (loco run-round) carrying out work that was completed on 17/02.

18/02 Southbound coal noted at 15.00 behind 66072. This date marked the first appearance of Voyager sets on booked passenger workings over the SW-NE corridor working using the 1E27 06.45 Bristol-Newcastle and return 1V55 13.08 Newcastle-Bristol. The train today formed of 220027+220011 left 25 minutes late, but on arrival at Newcastle the former set was named Tyne Voyager. Another ceremony took place at Bristol on the return when 220011 became Avon Voyager. The latter ceremony was performed by VT chief Chris Green in the company of 'Mr Brunel' and Bristol MP Doug Naysmith. 47832 had earlier worked the 1C99 Paddington-Penzance sleeper and 47776 was unusually employed on the 1M56 08.40 Penzance-Manchester (as far as Birmingham NS). A mystery working during the morning was that of 66516 with 4Z35 05.05 Crewe Basford Hall yard-Kingsland road empty car-flats. The train had run via Kemble and Swindon (run-round) but the trains purpose was not established.

19/02 220011/027 returned to Newcastle as 1E28 and 220013/024 worked 1V55. This diagram should be an out-and-back working for a single Voyager but, until the servicing facilities are available at Barton Hill, sets will be swapped at Newcastle. When the full fleet is in operation, five Voyagers are expected to undergo servicing at Barton Hill each night. 57601 was recorded running 'light' towards South Wales from Laira to Landore for a D exam (Filton 17.09).

20/02 Two southbound freights recorded within 5 minutes this evening, 66015 with "Yeoman" stone hoppers at 19.55, followed by 66207 with coal. Due to 220024 failing at Barton Hill, 220013 operated 1E28 on its own. 1V55 was formed by 220004/011. Voyager set 220029 worked west to be named Cornish Voyager/Vyajer Kerneweky (with 220030 Devon Voyager) the next day. Former Central Trains branded 153320+153321 both now carry the Heart of Wales orange colour scheme being seen paired on the 1B26 Penzance-Pembroke service during the day.

21/02 220006 Clyde Voyager+220007 worked the 1V55 13.08 Newcastle-Bristol. 37 418 was present on Barton Hill depot prior to running light to Newport (Pilning 11.28) and 58 043 headed the 6C40 12.12 Newport-Westbury fly-ash (Pilning 11.43), conveying three engineers wagons behind the loco. 220030 was stabled on Barton Hill overnight.

22/02 220004/010 worked 1V55, arriving in Bristol 1 hr 20 minutes late after York station was closed due to roof damage from high winds. 66048 passed at 05.52 with 6Z30 Bathgate-Portbury empty Wincar car carriers to work the first car train from the dock back to Bathgate as 6Z42 at 17.32. 220006 + 220007 worked the 1E27 06.45 service to Newcastle, whilst over at platform 12, 47846 had failed with a 5Z77 07.00 St.Phillips Marsh-Laira stock move formed 10590 + 10532 + 10534 + 10584 + 9520 + 6206. 08904 and brakevan arrived around an hour later to remove the defective loco but was unable to do so due to some sort of brake problem on the 47! 67018 later arrived from Barton Hill removed the 47 to platform 15 and then took the stock onwards to Laira. At Plymouth 47811 later took the stock onwards to Penzance as 5Z79 from 67018. 47846 was later repaired and ran light from Bristol-Laira. On the freight side, 56107 headed the 6C91 08.39 Newport-Bridgwater freight running 192 minutes late from Newport! and earlier 67029 + 47791 were paired on the 1M59 09.12 Bristol-Warrington vans. 57601 was again recorded back on the 1A28 06.30 Plymouth-Paddington and 1C50 15.42 Paddington-Exeter. Some Wessex train services suffered delays following a fallen tree on the line between Salisbury and Southampton.

23/02 History in the making! Class 52 diesel-hydraulic D1015 Western Champion hauled it's first mainline passenger train Pathfinder Tours 'Western Pathfinder' (1Z46 06.28 Crewe-Paddington, worked by 'Peak' 46035, 1Z52 12.09 Paddington-Gloucester, 1Z29 16.42 Gloucester-Paddington headed by D1015 and 1Z30 19.14 Paddington-Crewe, again with the peak.). The train arrived in Bristol 2 minutes early at 14.28 despite being 20 minutes down leaving London. Good crowds were at various vantage points along the route to view/film/or photograph the loco, which represented the final Class of diesel-hydraulic loco to be withdrawn by the Western Region 25 years ago in February 1977. Riviera trains choc/cream coaches were used;-4902 + 5030 + 5029 + 4963 + 5040 + 4927 + 5009 + 3098 + 1863 + 3140 + 21272 + 17105(service coach). Earlier in the day Royal 47799 had worked the 'Northern Belle' (1Z56 07.30 Manchester Victoria-Bath, 5Z56 13.16 Bath-Swindon, 5Z57 16.12 Swindon-Bath and 1Z57 16.41 Bath-Manchester Victoria). The train arrived at Bath around 30 minutes early and was sent to Swindon as ECS instead of Westbury. Railtrack/Serco test-unit DB999600+DB999601 was noted stabled on the former Bath Road depot stub beyond platform 15 during the afternoon (the set was to work as 2Z08 11.40 Temple Meads-Tytherington-Westerleigh-Newport-Gloucester-Sharpness (16.47) and return to Newport on 25/02)

24/02 Overnight engineering trains over the Bristol-Taunton mainline were;- 7W30 Westbury-Bridgwater (via Taunton) with 66152, 6W32 Westbury-Uphill junction (via Bristol TM) 60079, 6W31 Westbury-Uphill junction (via Bristol TM) 60082, 6W33 Westbury-Uphill junction (via Bristol TM) 66173 and 66055(?) top n'tail (and recorded at Weston-super-Mare) and 6W34 Westbury-Worle junction (via Bristol TM). Later 47810 with the 1V84 13.05 Preston-Penzance Virgin XC service (loco and coaches in place of an HST) was diverted into Temple Meads (having should have run via Day's curve) so the loco could be turned because of a defective windscreen wiper!

25/02 220004/010 returned on 1V55, as there was no set swap at Newcastle. 220030 was noted adjacent to Barton Hill depot at 11:15, passed through Temple Meads ECS 15 minutes later and arrived at Plymouth 14:17, presumably on a crew training run. 57601 continued work on the 1A28/1C50 First/GW services and 180109 was seen at Temple Meads at 13.30. 66162 worked the 6V62 Westbury-St.Phillips Marsh fuel tanks. A lightening strike at Par caused signalling problems over the single line Probus-Burngullow single line and some northbound late running notably the 1S35 09.22 Penzance-Edinburgh which was terminated at Taunton 70 minutes late. The 1V41 06.45 Newcastle-Plymouth was terminated at Taunton and returned north in the path of the 1S35 at 12.36. 66 027 worked the overnight 6B99 freight which included TPO coach 80348 and 66 029 worked the balancing 6C24. A minor landslip was reported between Parsons Street and Nailsea.

26/02 15.30 saw 20311/314 pass by with the Bridgwater - Sellafield flasks. 220004/010 remained on the diagram.

27/02 220032/033 worked 1V55 and were later noted at Barton Hill with 220030. 47793 worked the Victoria-Bath/Bristol and return VSOE.

28/02 57601 again worked the 1A28/1C50. Freight workings recorded today include 66223 viewed slowly passing over the up through line with a Devonport-Sellafield submarine reactor special movement complete with escort saloons, 58025 hauling 18 fly-ash wagons as 6B73 Westbury-Newport (via Day's curve) and 56115 which had run light to Bridgwater to collect two empty bogie flats (depart Bridgwater 11.31).
