Freight Review

Back on 18th October, awaiting my train to Nuneaton, 66619 passed northbound through Leicester with the following rake of side-tipping bogies: 501337/ 391/ 390/ 389/ 317/ 057/ 289/ 290/ 291/ 017/ 085/ 194/ 193/ 195/ 025. Apparently this is the Carlisle-Mountsorrel service and is usually class 70 hauled, but only as far as Crewe ! It also travels via Bescot and when the service has been noted at Stafford earlier in the day the consist is twice the length as it is when it passes Leicester , having dropped off vehicles at Bescot. Actually, that evening at Nuneaton was quite busy with some additional/late-running services being noted. The Colas Rail service to and from Hams Hall, which everyone keeps telling me has ceased and will terminate at Daventry instead - and be worked by DB Schenker, was noted at it's usual time heading southbound in the charge of 66845 vehicles being: 33.87.4909.327/ 394/ 395/ 385/ 301/ 390/ 386/ 389/ 396/ 383, 33.68.4909.357/ 386/ 872/ 369. The southbound automotive service was in the charge of 92041. A Freightliner coal service was also noted heading east with 66565 at the head, consist being: 370248/ 024/ 084/ 108/ 124/ 175/ 172/ 128/ 331/ 148/ 073/ 525/ 097/ 126/ 051/ 538 (not all the vehicles were noted due to the visibility and severe graffiti!). The two DRS ex-Daventry services were hauled by 66422 and 66416 respectively. We still keep hearing rumours of DRS dropping all their class 66s except the last four due to their not being required. However, these two services through Nuneaton are still being regularly hauled by all members of the class in the DRS fleet! Class 70, 70001, is still a regularly sighting in the evening at Nuneaton on the Ipswich - Lawley street , the service being lengthened to thirty bogies. A week later, 25th October, at Leicester , two coal services - one DB Schenker and one Freightliner - were noted. Firstly 66091 with the following train: 310390/ 837/ 024/ 941/ 538/ 609/ 513/ 138/ 152/ 341/ 583/ 440/ 222/ 553/ 172/ 478/ 523/ 887/ 971/ 892, 311017. Not too far behind was 66528 with its train: 370110/ 197/ 141/ 160/ 309/ 134/ 184/ 162/ 225/ 150/ 112/ 206/ 108/ 144/ 140/ 177/ 158/ 077/ 106. A nice sight at Nuneaton that evening was the southbound automotive service being hauled by 92001 and 90029 both resplendent in EWS livery. Moving on to 8th November and the sight of four class 20 locomotives, 20301, 20302, 20304, 20305 complete with two barrier vehicles (ex-bogie fuel tanks) heading northbound, at 13.10, through Leicester en route to Old Dalby to collect some tube stock. They were noted later that afternoon at Melton Mowbray with the stock. That same day, at about 17.35, 70004 was at the head of the Crewe-Mountsorrel engineers' service, vehicles being: 501077/ 171/ 170/ 169/ 017/ 053/ 277/ 278/ 279/ 113. (Comparing this rake with the service noted on 18th October it seems these vehicles do change within the set rakes!) Then, on 22nd November, the same service, hauled by 66560, had the following vehicles: 501037/ 235/ 237/ 236/ 099/ 004/ 135/ 131/ 130/ 064/ 017/ 169/ 170/ 171/ 077. The lunchtime Doncaster-Mountsorrel service, which had been hauled by 66620 for about four weeks, finally changed locos and 66617 appeared with the following rake, noted in Leicester Humberstone Road at lunchtime on 9th December: 31.70.5992.003/ 002/ 095/ 119/ 055/ 031/ 117/ 082/ 084/ 070/ 032/ 027/ 106/ 107/ 104/ 115/ 043/ 118/ 044/ 114/ 087/ 092/ 101. The evening at Leicester on that date generated the test train, top and tailed by a magnificent-looking 47712 Pride of Carlisle and 37259. The same night 66951 was at the head of the Crewe-Mountsorrel (wagons not identified due to the train traversing Platform One at Leicester in fog!). A Freightliner coal then headed northbound with 66561 in charge, consist: 370055/ 172/ 200/ 330/ 221/ 136/ 057/ 038/ 100/ 063/ 118/ 069/ 151/ 028/ 163/ 173/ 229/ 373. A DB Schenker coal service following with 66122 at the head. The vehicles on this train being: 310509/ 330/ 750/ 336/ 069/ 561/ 204/ 528/ 949/ 347/ 660/ 944/ 783/ 206/ 385, 311145/ 043/ 100/ 034/ 058. To end with, a snippet of news that has come to my notice recently is that the Fawley-Castle Bromwich bitumen service has ceased and the site at Castle Bromwich has been noted having all the unloading facilities being removed and the trackwork into the site also being removed and, apparently, being concreted over. I believe that this was the last of the services transporting bitumen in the old four-wheel vehicles - a regular sight on Monday evenings at Leamington Spa. That's about all for this effort - the last of 2010. So all good fortune in 2011 to all of you. I'll order a scorching Summer for everyone! All the best.
