Tytherington Quarry branchline
28/07 Following an overnight ballast drop several weeks previous, MPV DR98908+DR98958 visited the line as 6Z05 12:00 Barton Hill - Tytherington Quarry and 13:51 return, being noted passing Iron Acton at 13:13 and on the return at Latteridge level crossing at 13:58. The branch is to be returned to use following a near two year gap, during August.

A new track re-cycling depot on the down-side has opened and is to deal with a
quarter of Britain’s rail network redundant track expected to be around 10,000
tonnes during a year as well as 30,000 tonnes of steel for re-cycling. This is
the first of three such sites to be opened around
25/07 With 08757 moved to Didcot, 60049 was used on yard pilot duties over the following few days.
Weymouth
03/07 The 2V67 16:55 Weymouth - Bristol TM with 67016 was delayed due to problems with 150243 formed with 153318 on the 2E27 16:08 service to Great Malvern (which had departed in front of the Class 67’s train), on Upwey bank. The train could only move at slow speed, the Class 153 doing it’s best to assist!
09/07 Steam 46115 Royal Scotsman put in its first appearance away from the Midlands on a 1Z96 08:25 Kensington Olympia - Yeovil junction working, arriving to time at 13:20. 47760 then took the train forward as 1Z97 14:00 Yeovil junction - Weymouth , with a loco run-round at Pen Mill station, for the steam loco to return the trip as 1Z98 17:38 to Waterloo following a light-engine run after turning at Yeovil junction.
28/07 Steam 60019 Bittern arrived at 13:30 with a 1Z96 Waterloo - Weymouth ‘Dorset Coast Express’. The return 1Z97, which departed around 17:30 was banked from Weymouth, over Upwey bank by 30777 Sir Lamiel, the second loco being detached at Wareham (for the Swanage Railway). Bittern had during the afternoon made the regular trip to Yeovil junction for turning to work the return.

FREIGHT REVIEW
Greetings again to a
review of freight proceedings for the past six weeks or so (Yes, I know I'm a
little late with this effort once again but life is busy at the present time!).
First off some snippets of news that have come my way recently. About twenty of
the stored Fastline coal hoppers have been removed from Long Marston for a
proposed new flow of limestone. Their present location is not known.
Incidentally, Fastline-liveried 66434 has been noted working for DRS again and
has been seen at Nuneaton on the evening workings from Daventry. The Fastline class 66s are to be
acquired by GBRf and will be renumbered 66733 to 66737. A couple of weeks back,
on 11th October two unidentified DRS class 37s were noted, mid-afternoon,
passing Nuneaton southbound with a rake of the 23.80.2929.xxx vans, the working
being a Long Marston-Shoeburyness movement according to reliable sources at
Nuneaton. In the same vein however, six examples of these vehicles were seen two
weeks later at Eastleigh. Whether these are from the Long Marston batch is not known. On 18th October,
again mid-afternoon at Nuneaton, 66423 was seen heading south with a rake of 33.80.2693.xxx vans. It is known
that these vehicles had been reported in Marcroft Stoke for repair. Again, their
destination wasn't ascertained. I had heard a report about a month or so ago
concerning a new working for Stobart Rail from Bonen near Dusseldorf to Ditton utilising Austatte twin sets and that a trial run had been set for
August. However, no further news of this has come my way, even whether the trial
run actually took place! Since Allerton Depot virtually closed the repair of
vehicles for DB Schenker that was carried out here has now having to go to
Horbury! There is a once-a-week service Warrington-Horbury to furnish this need.
There has been an early cement service northbound through Leicester every so often hauled by a Freightliner class 66. The service, consisting of
four-wheel PCAs, normally passes through northbound about 07.10. Apparently this
is the 04.45 West Thurrock --Earles Sidings and is a 'Q' working. Some of the Lafarge bogie cement hoppers
are finding their way to Westbury now and again. A recent service consisted of
the following vehicles: 12413/441/
415/412/447/424/429/433/417/443/426/419/427/434/420/432/437/404. Moving on to a
couple of sightings of long-term stored vehicles now. At West Ruislip
Underground Depot are four VAA/VDA vans formerly used as barrier vehicles for
the movement of underground stock. Three of the four are: 200756, 210142 and
210367 - the fourth vehicle not being known. And at Bordesley in the

A ‘Dorset Coast Express’ was routed via Yeovil junction for the event as 1Z91 08:47 Waterloo - Weymouth (noted near Sherborne at 12:17) behind steam 30777 Sir Lamiel (in place of 60019 Bittern). The loco was turned on the steam centre turntable, and then ran 15:15 light-engine to Weymouth to take the return 1Z93 17:00 Weymouth - Clapham junction. 47760 had meanwhile worked the train onwards as 1Z92 13:20 Yeovil junction - Weymouth, via a loco run-round at Yeovil Pen Mill (departing at 13:45 - 13 ealy), the c/stock in use being: E14099 (loco support coach), 5216, 5171, 5200, 1840, 13440, 9104, 99127, 1961, 5237, 5236. One of the railway’s
service trains was used as an ambulance to ferry an injured cyclist from a road
inaccessible location on the line in the
Bath
direction, back to
Exeter Riverside Yard
It has been reported that a goods shed at this location is to be used by volunteers for the construction of a Clan 72xxx loco, another class of steam loco which were all scrapped on withdrawl in the sixties.
A1 60163 Tornado
Two suspected faulty stays (internal strengtheners in the engine’s boiler), found during routine maintenance has seen this steam loco taken out of mainline service. Five defective stays discovered in late May and early June were replaced along with seven others. The loco was in the meantime taken out of service whilst an investigation was undertaken into the defect and repair needs. 6024 King Edward I has acted as a replacement loco on the Torbay Express and a Carmarthen trip booked to run on 10th July was postponed.

S & D Tunnel to see the light!
On 18/07/10 a special
preview event saw the the former Somerset & Dorset mainline Combe Down
Tunnel, closed in the 1960s, open to the public. After 4 years of campaigning, a
£1 million scheme will see Combe Down, and nearby Devonshire tunnels re-opened
as part of Sustrans ‘
Open and permanently ‘closed’ case
A new Health & Safety directive will see mainline coach door windows permanently sealed, with door handles fitted on the inside of carriage doors. First/GW will have a ‘trial’ HST coach in service during November, so fitted, with a deadline for modifications to be completed in 2012. It is believed some of the current private owner mainline fleet, including some Mk Is have already had inside door handles fitted.
