Irish stone service.
02/09 66089 ran 0C90 Newport ADJ - Avonmouth Chittening estate light for the return 6C97 trip.
16/09 66178 was in charge of the Newport - Avonmouth and return trip freight working.
22/09 66014 arrived in West Wharf at 12:50 with 6C63 empty stone wagons for loading, later returning as 6Z64 Avonmouth - Acton, this train being recorded as passing Keynsham at 17:58 and Swindon at 19:07.
23/09 66088 was on the 6C63 inward import stone empties.
24/09 Most unusually, a third stone service operated this being on consecutive days! 66037 arrived early afternoon on empty Hanson bogie hoppers for the return loaded service.
30/09 66031 arrived at 10:44 in the Bulk Handling terminal with the 6C90 trip freight ex. Newport ADJ with the specially converted container flat shunters wagon on the rear of the train.
A new freight-flow from the docks is rumoured for DBS, although further details are currently unknown.
Locos recorded on coal duty during the month have included: 66030/082/143/150/237.
Bristol Parkway, Pilning and Westerleigh
02/09 59203 passed Pilning around two hours late, during the afternoon on
6Z83 12:40 Machen - West Darayton ARC loaded stone. Earlier, FLHH 66509 had
passed Parkway mid-morning on 6Z11 07:49 Reading - Moreton-on-Lugg stone
03/09 37601 + 37604 passed Parkway early at 13:35 with the 6M67 14:02 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks.
Tonight's viewing, comprised of 66553 departing from the yard with coal empties for Portbury, 66596 arriving with empties and 66020working the MoD Liner. Also seen was the NR HST with power cars 43013/062.
04/09 Signaling problems at Hullavington saw several First/GW HST services diverted via Bath, during part of the day. 31465 on a 1Q12 04:30 Eastleigh - Derby test working (formed with c/stock: 9481 + 977869 + 9701) passed Filton Abbey wood at 08:37 (9 minutes late), being later reported through Cheltenham at 09:15.
05/09 Back to back HST power cars 43041 + 43125 ran 0Z86 St. Phillips Marsh - Landore during the morning. 66549 later passed Parkway at 17:00 with stone empties to Pengam.
07/09 Freightliner locos seen this evening were 66522 and 66596 in the yard joined later 66520 with a rake of MGR empties. 66117 worked the MoD Liner and 66143 with a loaded Avonmouth - Didcot MGR service.
08/09 66598 worked the 6A21 Pengam - Theale stone empties.
09/09 66194 departed Parkway loop at 16:45 on the 6O78 Margam - Dollands Moor export steel destined for France. DRS 66414 + 66428 earlier passed at 14:15 with the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks.
10/09 Test unit 950001 returned North through Parkway at 12:08 following work in the West Country and later 66012 passed at 16:19 on the 6O78 Dollands Moor export steel.
11/09 Parkway station was evacuated around 11:15 following a report of a man carrying a gun on a Paddington - South Wales HST, however the incident ended as a 'hoax' and all was back to normal by 12:15.
12/09 With the Bridgend - Margam, South Wales mainline closed for engineering work, the day's oil services, the 6B13 (6B47 return empties) Robeston - Westerleigh and 6A11 (6B33) Robeston - Theale were both cancelled. The 6V98 (6E41) Lindsey tanks were also cancelled on this date.
Some returning engineering trains to Westbury from the Bridgend work sites were: 6W01 (with 66017), 6W02 (66077) and 6W03 (66140). FLHH locos stabled at Parkway during the afternoon were: 66553 (with a rake of empty coal wagons), 66522 and 66595.
Also noted during the day was 59205 passed Pilning at 15:19 on the 6Z83 14:10 Machen - Acton loaded stone.
14/09 66519 took an empty MGR service to Portbury shortly after 19:15, 66595 remained at the head of another rake of empty MGR wagons for the duration. The 6B13 Robeston - Theale tanks with 60073 were caped due to the loco failing at Sarnau (between Whitland and Carmarthen). 66035 + 66060 assisted the train onwards to Margam arriving here 400 minutes late!
15/09 Freight train observations at Parkway during the day included:- 66011 with the 6B49 Llanwern - Swindon loaded steel (08:13) and 6B50 return service (down loop 15:32-15:52), 66014 on the 6L97 Port Talbot Grange sidings - Lea Interchange (Camden) stone (departing the up loop at 15:12), Fastline 66303 on the 4V09 Chaddeston - Portbury coal empties (15:43) and 66204 heading the 6B33 Theale - Robeston fuel tank empties (down loop departing at 16:19).
17/09 66124 arrived at Parkway at 16:46 with the 6V77 13:22 (ThO) Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey china clay empties, being later noted departing Temple Meads at 19:34. Earlier, 66553 passed Parkway at 16:19 heading for Chipping Sodbury to run-round with 4V22 09:15 Fiddler's Ferry - Stoke Gifford coal empties. The loco and train later departed at 16:44 onwards to Portbury.
Also recorded at 16:57 was 31105 propelling a test train through Parkway towards Temple Meads formed 9714 (driving van), 999606, 72631. 66519 again recorded leaving the yard for Portbury with MGR empties, being replaced by 66595 which arrived with empties and taken off a stabled on the far side. (Was still on site Friday & Saturday), also present was 66553.
Two other workings during the evening were 66051 ADJ - Wembley "Enterprise" service and 66089 with the MoD Liner.
18/09 66020 passed Parkway at 18:16 on the 6X52 Portbury - Tyne yard/Mossend loaded cars and vans.
19/09 Locos stabled at Parkway for the week-end period were:- 66522, 66523 and 66595. 60035 ran 0B33 Margam - Theale light-engine, West Wales tank traffic being again cancelled for the day, with PW work again being carried out between Bridgend and Margam, two returning departures were at 12:00 and 14:00 both this time to Oxford Hinksey yard not Westbury. On the freight side:- 66192 was on a 6Z35 Moreton - on - Lugg - Acton loaded stone passing during the early afternoon, whilst later 59202 headed a 6Z83 14:10 Machen - Acton stone.
21/09 66011 (not 60035) return empty fuel tanks as 6Z33 06:26 Theale - Robeston passing Parkway at 08:50, the loco later returning on the 6O78 Dollands Moor export steel, being reported through Severn Tunnel junction at 16:06 and Swindon at 17:24. 66563 worked the empties to Portbury shortly after 19:15, replacement empty MGRs, were worked in by 66595, which was again removed and stabled, taking the place of 66602. Also seen tonight was the ADJ - Wembley "Enterprise" service behind 66178 and 66139 passed through on the MoD Liner.
23/09 66037 passed Patchway at 14:15 on a 6Z41 13:30 Newport ADJ - Barton Hill rail-head treatment train 'transit' move (with wagons 642020 + 642034), routed into the depot by the North end mainline connection. At the same passing time of 14:15 over at Parkway, 37604 + 37603 headed North on the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks.
24/09: 66595 worked the MGR empties to Portbury this evening, the replacements arriving behind 66519 later on. 66178 worked the ADJ - Wembley "Enterprise service and 66087 appeared with the MoD Liner.
26/09 DBS livered 66152 worked back into South Wales on the 6V78 Dolland's Moor - Margam, steel empties and later ran 0Z66 12:00 Newport ADJ - St. Blazey with 66153, new livery 66152 being needed for filming work in Cornwall on china clay traffic. Another sighting for the day was 60091 on the 6Z35 12:52 Moreton-on-Lugg - Acton stone empties.
27/09 66518, 66563 and 66605 were all stabled in Stoke Gifford sidings.
28/09: Portbury coal empties were taken forward by 66510 with 66518 arriving with the next set of empty MGR wagons. 66088 worked the ADJ - Wembley "Enterprise" service followed later by 66103 with the MoD Liner.
29/09 66420 + 66427 passed Parkway at 13:45 on the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks.
Bristol Temple Meads, Barton Hill and Kingsland Road
01/09 67001 replaced Royal 67005 on the First/GW loco and coaches 'hire'
service. 31105 was stabled on the former Bath Road depot stub with a test train
during the morning, whilst later 66149 arrived in Temple Meads at 13:21 with the
6V62 Eastleigh - Plymouth Tavistock yard depot fuel, this being prior to the St.
Phillips Marsh delivery move. Also recorded was a 6Z21 09:55 Doncaster Decoy
yard - Taunton Fairwater concrete sleeper train during the afternoon with 66585,
being recorded through Worle (Weston-super-Mare) at 17:08, 123 minutes late.
Also blue livered 66623 worked a 6Z21 14:45 Theale - Pengam empty stone via
Day's curve, being booked via East depot loop (16:53-18:14) and recorded at
Severn Tunnel Junction at 19:05.
A BBC film crew using Temple Meads as an interview location were on hand to record an interesting (and dangerous!) trespass incident involving a person who was believed to be evading a £5:00 ticket surcharge, ride a mountain bike off the end of platform 4 and out of view under the Bath Road A4 road over bridge! A chasing police officer returned with only the person's base-ball cap, the bike later being found abandoned by a fence in the Pylle Hill area!
02/09 GBRf 66728 was on a further 5V66 Kilmarnock (Barclays) - Laira stock move formed with c/stock: 6338 + 40801 + 6330. The return working was 5Z70 13:05 Laira - Old Oak Common via Westbury (originally coded 0M66 as a light-engine, but it was assumed the barrier vans were to be also moved), the following day.
03/09 37601 + 37604 passed Parson's street at 13:10 with the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks and the NRMT HST set (with power cars 43013 + 43062) running as 1Z17 17:30 Derby - Taunton called at Temple Meads between 19:42-19:48, prior to later returning and being noted at Bath at 21:28, returning here for Swindon, again via Temple Meads (and Parkway) at 22:20.
04/09 The First/GW local DBS loco and stock 'hire' service was recorded as formed: 67016 + 6064 + 6117 + 6008 + 9508 + 67001, the first part of the diagram, the 5D04 Barton Hill - Taunton ECS being recorded passing Yatton at 06:04. Also during the morning, 142029 + 142063 were used to start the 1A12 07:38 Paignton - Paddington as far as Exeter, for an HST set to take over to run it's normal route via Bristol.
On the subject of 142 units, set 142064 was reported stabled on St. Phillips Marsh during the day.
In preparation for the following day's Summer Saturday First/GW 'relief' (which was to be Class 37 hauled!), 37401 ran 0Z37 11:25 Didcot - Barton Hill arriving around 13:00 and 37670 was 0Z20 15:01 Bescot - Barton Hill arriving during the evening.
05/09 With HST or DMU sets expected to be available for the 2010 First/GW passenger 'relief' service, what was billed as the the last ever Bristol - Weymouth loco-hauled passenger service (2072 09:09 Temple Meads - Weymouth and 2V67 16:58 return) was in the hands of 37670 (in DBS livery) + 37401(acting as train heat loco coupled inside 37670 both ways) with c/stock: 9494 + 6064 + 6117 + 6008 + 9508. The train, which was noted near Keynsham at 09:14 was carrying a 'Westbury Traincrews' headboard and was filled to standing capacity for most of it's journey with 234 passengers reported as getting off in Weymouth ! It must be remembered, that 37414 had previously worked the last Weymouth loco-hauled passenger train on 24/09/99 (see Magazine No.133 November 1999, page 8, 37407 being actually wrongly stated in this report for the day), carrying a 'Bristol - Weymouth line Class 37 finale headboard' with Carnforth based c/stock: 5569, 5487, 5478, 5491, 9448. It was also stated that the Class 67s were needed on a Plymouth train (?), however a Uk Railtour's 'Plymouth Navy Day's' Ocean liner special (1Z30 07:30 Paddington - Plymouth and 1Z31 18:05 return) routed both ways via Westbury did run, using 67003 + 'EWS silver' 67029 this being in place of expected DRS power.
Also recorded during the day were Arriva XC power cars 43366 + 43207 and coaches on the 1V45 07:00 Manchester - Newquay and 1M70 15:22 return which had been covered by a 'hire' National Express HST set during the summer.
06/09 The 'Torbay Express' (1Z27 09:15 Temple Meads - Kingswear and 1Z28 17:17 return) was in the hands of steam 6024 King Edward I and later 37670 + 37401 returned North as 0Z74 Barton Hill - Bescot light-engines (noted passing Parkway at 14:25).
08/09 66599 departed Temple Meads at 16:47 on a 6Z21 Doncaster - Taunton sleeper train and another 5V66 12:10 Kilmarnock (Barclays) - Laira stock move with GBRf 66712, conveying a refurbished buffet coach 40803 appeared late evening. Again, the 66 with the two barrier vans returned via Westbury during the following day as 5F70 Laira - Old Oak Common.
09/09 66418 + 66428 departed Bridgwater at 13:03 on the 6M67 nuclear flasks to Crewe, whilst the 6Z83 Machen - Westbuey loaded stone, headed by 59204 passed Bath at 13:55.
10/09 66546 was on the 6Z21 Hope (Earles sidings) cement - Moorswater and 6M37 return empties.
11/09 Southbound departmental working seen this afternoon hauled by 66017 at 16:00.
12/09 A 0Y12 17:34 Bristol Kingsland Road - Westbury light loco move with 66510 + 66549 + 66599 arrived at Westbury at 17:15, 19 minutes before the booked departure time!
13/09 The day's 'Torbay Express' was cancelled, due to low bookings, but steam 60163 Tornado passed through the area on a high mileage 'Cathedrals Express' (1Z64 16:50 Exeter St. David's - Clapham junction, having arrived in Exeter as 1Z63 08:22 ex. Waterloo via Yeovil and the ex. LSWR route). A water stop took place at Weston-super-Mare station, the train later being reported through Flax Bourton at 18:34 (following the 18:16 Weston-super-Mare -Bristol TM First/GW local service) and Bath at 18:50. The c/stock formation in use was EH02 (Ex. OM02) being reported with loco support coach M14007 (maroon livery) as 5350, 4927, 5009, 1863, 3107, 3140, 3112, 3122 (all choc/cream), 1699 (blue), 3068, 3069 (both carmine and cream), 21272 (choc/cream).
A returning HOBC report for the morning was 66606 + 66623 top n'tailing a 6Y11 via Bristol to Taunton.
14/09 The evening 6C99 21:47 (MO) Newport ADJ - St. Blazey freight service with 66124 was noted conveying rail-head treatment (water cannon) wagons 642010 + 642045.
15/09 31105 and a test train (with driving van 9703) was again stabled on the former Bath Road depot spur during the morning. The train later worked an evening test train to Swindon Transfer yard.
16/09 66430 + 66433 passed Parson's Street at 13:12 on the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks. A check on the day's Arriva XC HST diagrams found the following power cars and set formations in use: 43285 (XC01) 43366 1V46 06:32 York - Plymouth / 1S55 13:21 Plymouth - Edinburgh. 43301 (XC03) 43303 1V44 06:00 Leeds - Plymouth / 1S51 15:51 Plymouth - Glasgow Central. 43357 (XC04) 43378 1V54 06:32 Dundee - Plymouth (which was terminated, due to overhead line problems in the Berwick area) with 43304 (XC05) 43384 on the 1V50 06:08 Edinburgh Waverley - Plymouth also affected. The latter was in fact restarted as 1Z50 10:30 Derby - Plymouth, using a Voyager set, which is believed to have returned North on the 1E63 15:21 Plymouth - Leeds as booked.
17/09 Green livered 47812 returned a 6Z47 09:55 Plymouth Tavistock Junction - Rugby Overhead line depot departmental (formed ZWA DR76601, YDA DR92377 and KFA 93446) passing Taunton at 11:35 (right time), Uphill junction (Weston-super-Mare) 12:19 (3 late), Dr. Day's junction (Bristol) 13:05 (3 late) and Parkway 13:17 (4 early).
18/09 A signalling failure between Bristol and Newport saw numerous operating changes into the evening. 67001 and 67016 top n'tailed the 15:30 Cardiff - Portsmouth Harbour service (calling additionally at Severn Tunnel junction) as far as Bristol in place of a unit, whilst 158951 was on the 2C79 14:00 Cardiff - Taunton First/GW loco hauled working onwards from Temple Meads at 14:59 (6 late). Also the 12:22 and 13:22 Portsmouth - Cardiff Central services were both terminated at Temple Meads and at Parkway the 14:15 and 15:15 Paddington - Cardiff First/GW HST services were both terminated. The 15:55, 16:55 and 17:55 Cardiff - Paddington First/GW HST were all started from Parkway along with the 16:30 Cardiff - Portsmouth which started from Temple Meads.
20/09 Steam 6024 King Edward I was again on the day's 1Z27/1Z28 'Torbay Express' whilst 66585 + 66598 top n'tailed a return North Somerset junction - Taunton Fairwater 6Y33 departmental. 66510 and 66562 were stabled in Kingsland Road sidings at 15:00.
21/09 The NR Radio test train 3 was back in the area being top n'tailed with 37607 + 37608 (with c/stock : 1256, 5981, 977997, 9481) running as 1Z12 08:30 Derby - Kingsland Road.
22/09 West Coast 47787 arrived in Temple Meads early at 13:15 on a 2Z01 09:15 Tyseley - Bristol saloon (999506), returning as 2Z02 14:05 Temple Meads - Tyseley leaving at 13:43 running both ways via Bath. The NR Radio test train 3 with DRS locos 37607 + 37608 worked 1Z13 08:30 Kingsland Road - Kingsland Road, making several trips via Pilning and Parkway, to south Wales during the day and an evening return to the west-end of Temple Meads for stabling.
An afternoon train failure on the Weston-super-Mare loop saw this section of line closed, passengers being advised 30 minutes after the original announcement to catch an Arriva XC service to Taunton for a road bus service back to Weston. An additional stop at Worle, on the outskirts of Weston would have been a more simpler alternative?
23/09 The Radio tests train 3 departed the area as 1Z14 08:19 Temple Meads - Derby top n'tailed by the same two DRS locos, again with a complex diagram being noted at Yate at 08:53 (prior to a reverse) and onwards to Newport (reverse) before heading back into Temple Meads through Filton Abbeywood at 10:38. The train then ran to Severn Tunnel Junction for a reverse, to Gloucester where another reverse took place, Severn Tunnel junction for a further reverse, Lydney, Gloucester and on to Derby. Another DRS working during the day with 37604 + 37603 was noted passing Worle at 13:31 on the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe flasks. Also 67020 brought in the VSOE via Bath during the afternoon from London and 66620 was on the 6Z21/6M37 Moorswater cement. Blue livered 31106 arrived during the early evening on a 4Z10 Derby RTC - Kingsland Road test train (formed 72631 + 999606 + 9714) being routed via Worcester - Oxford - Worcester - Bromsgrove - Yate and noted through Parkway at 16:58 to Temple Meads (via Bristol West).
24/09 31106 returned North on a 4Z10 11:03 Kingsland Road - Derby RTC, via Bath (noted 11:31), Castle Cary 13:16 (and 16:45 here on the return) via Weymouth arriving at 15:25 and leaving at 15:34 (31 early). DRS 37607 arrived at 15:59 on a OZ37 Derby - Temple Meads route learner and 67017 was reported to have replaced 67001 on the First/GW loco hauled DBS 'hire' service from this date.
25/09 37607 continued South as an 0Z37 Bristol - Weymouth light-engine move, returning as 13:30 Weymouth - Derby. Earlier, during the early hours, the 1A40 Penzance - Paddington First/GW sleeper service, headed by 57604 was reported as failed at Bridgwater being assisted forward by FLHH 66614 to Bristol.
26/09 Following the previous day's failure, the First/GW sleeper services were worked by 'hire' 57308 (1C99) and 57601 (1A40), the former being noted at Taunton at 02:04 and the latter here at 02:33. 60011 ran 0B33 07:00 Theale - Newport ADJ light passing Bristol East at 12:53 (10 early) and Patchway at 12:44 (2 early). The morning 6M60 00:30 Plymouth Tavistock yard - Bescot freight was worked by 66066.
27/09 Steam 6024 King Edward I brought the 2009 'Torbay Express' season to a close, two proposed 'Xmas Torbay Express' trips on 12th and 13th December being both announced as cancelled. Also recorded during the day were 153305 + 153373 + 150233 + 150263 on the First/GW 15:07 (Sun) Penzance - Temple Meads service. The 1A12 13:00 Temple Meads - Paddington First/GW HST left 12 minutes late due to the GWML being closed near West Drayton following a fire and passenger evacuation on unit 165109 working the 1D29 11:42 Paddington - Oxford service.
28/09 57308 worked the 1A40 Penzance - Paddington First/GW sleeper service. Making only it's second mainline preservation appearance in Bristol, steam loco 4953 Pitchford Hall with 5029 Nunney Castle passed Ashley Hill at 15:37 running as a 5Z69 09:45 Tyseley - Bishop's Lydeard (WSR) locos and support coach W35461 move, via Oxford and Swindon. The working departed Temple Meads early (being booked here from 16:27-17:49), arriving around 2 hours early on the planned 19:15 arrival time on the West Somerset Railway !
Earlier, steam 6024 King Edward I had run 5Z29 12:?? Barton Hill - Bishop's Lydeard with coaches: W35333 (loco support) and 4946, 5008, 4996 (previously in use on the 'Torbay Express'), passing Worle at 12:22, both workings being in readiness for the Autumn Mixed Traffic Gala on the preserved line. Also during the day, 66204 arrived 0Z97 light-engine from Eastleigh to return the rest of the 'Torbay Express' stock as 5Z97 to Eastleigh via Bath. 66116 was on the evening 6C99 21:47 Newport ADJ - St. Blazey freight service.
29/09 The 1C99 Paddington - Penzance First/GW sleeper service was again headed by 57308.
30/09 57308 returned the 1A40 Paddington - Penzance First/GW sleeper service west. 31285 was stabled on the Bath Road spur with a test working whilst 67016 and 67017 ended the month working the First/GW loco-hauled DBS 'hire' service. 66598 was on a 6Y27 23:52 (Tues) Westbury - Parsons Street CWR train, routed via a run-round in Taunton and 66420 + 66427 departed Bridgwater at 12:37 on the 6M67 nuclear flasks to Crewe. The following DRS Class 66/4s have now worked this train since their first appearance at Bridgwater on this service in early 2004: 66401/402/404/405/407/408/409/410/416/418/419/420/422/423/425/426/427
04/09 66194 + 66104 passed Central station at 09:07 on the 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh loaded fuel tanks in place of the normal single Class 60.
04/09 66075 worked the 6A36 Ashchurch (Army) - Didcot MoD trip.
09/09 Advenza 66842 ran 0Z80 from the North, to Cardiff Tidal sidings through Gloucester light-engine during the afternoon.
15/09 66134 ran 0B36 Ashchurch - Didcot light-engine having brought in a morning MoD service.
22/09 66037 was on the 6A36 Ashchurch - Didcot MoD trip.
24/09 First/GW 158959 worked empty stock as 5Z71 Gloucester - Reading for wheel-turning.
29/09 Advenza 66842 was again recorded as a 0Z50 Cardiff - Gloucester light-engine, having been reported through Newport at 08:26.
01/09 With a pair of Class 66s working the 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh loaded
fuel tanks, there was a report of no working Class 60s in South Wales for the
first time in many years.
04/09 The NRMT HST set (with power cars 43013 + 43062) worked 1Z20 Old Oak Common - Derby (via Swansea) passing west-bound at 08:18 and returning for the North via Bristol Parkway at 11:17.
07/09 66055 brought in 6Z71 Cliffe Vale - Newport ADJ a new Monday's-Only freight service, which conveys mainly empty china clay wagons destined for the West Country. The train is booked to collect additional, mainly departmental wagons (as required) from Bescot en-route.
09/09 60073 was on the overnight 6V19 Scunthorpe - Margam freight service.
14/09 66124 worked the 6G71 (6V69) Cliffe Vale - Newport ADJ (due 12:15), Monday's only freight.
16/09 60041 powered the 6M41 Margam - Round Oak steel coil service.
21/09 66066 was on the Monday's only 6G61 (6V69) Cliffe Vale - Newport ADJ freight.
24/09 Recently reinstated, blue-livered 60011 was on the 6V92 Corby - Margam steel empties.
29/09 60041 headed the 6V19 Scunthorpe - Margam freight.
01/09 The Tyne yard/Mossend loaded/empty car service has began a steady
increase in frequency in it's daily operation, some observations, with wagon
consist for the beginning part of the month of the inward 6X51 01:58 Bescot -

14/09 Fastline restarted their coal operation from this date with a 6Z99 19:00 departure to Ratcliffe P.S. (being a TThO during this week). The inward empties were timed as 4V09 11:49 Chaddeston (Derby) - Portbury (due 16:12). The company also ran their 6M18 05:00 Ratcliffe departure on certain dates during the month.
29/09 NR undertook undergrowth clearance, trackside towards the end of the month, so two rare types of plant in the Avon Gorge area would be given more room and sunlight to develop. The Hornugia petraea and Pontentilla Neumanniana are both present in this area, as well as the rare Sorbus tree species, the former two thrive only in limestone areas.

16/09 Green livered 47812, having run as 0Z47 09:38 Crewe C.S. - Westbury
(via Oxford, Swindon and Melksham) with 47805 (needed in Kent to pair up with
47839 for 'hire' freight work) the previous day, hauled Fairwater resident 73133
as 0Z73 10:54 Fairwater yard - Plymouth Tavistock yard. The Class 73 is to be
up-graded for mainline use, including the fitting of TPWS amongst other

Well, here we go again for yet another review of the past month for me
personally and some bits and bobs of general news concerning the freight scene.
One of the things that has been noticed in my neck of the woods has been the
replacement of the new continental-registered yellow boxes (31.70.5992.xxx
series) with older NLU29xxx series vehicles which are back on the Westbury
service to Mountsorrel. Actually it isn't all bad because in the said consist on
Thursday 8th February were new vehicles 31.70.5892.010/021/002/012/032/003. Also
there is a working of the monstrous "Octopus" train through Leicester
at about 18.30 routing Whitemoor-Bedford. On the same Thursday, 8th October, the
train, top and tailed by 66957 and 66952, consisted of the following vehicles:
362/363/364, 76502, 92706! Magnificent sight! Just to round of a busy evening at
Leicester we also had 66614 on the Lafarge bogie cement tanks, 66060 on the
Colnbrook-Lindsey bogie tanks and 66522 and 66520 top and tailed on the
following engineers' service: 29527/ 212/ 369/ 133/ 512/ 537/ 307/ 162/ 033/
424/ 073/ 339/ 341/ 278/ 435/ 080/ 205/ 491, 503109/ 094.
Anyway, I mentioned in last month's tome that I was heading to Barnetby on 17th September. Well, this I did - and had a wonderful day. Arriving at about 0800 and departing at 1830 I logged 52 freight movements (about one every eleven minutes)! Most were coal, and the ore was running at capacity, but these were interspersed with oil, steel, a couple on enterprise workings and engineers'. I'm not going to list all I saw, but will pick out some of the highlights (to me anyway!). Firstly, GBRf 66722 with the following coal service: 33.70.6955.242/243/234/232/221/228/229/230/226/231/239/200/236/238/237/ 244/240/227/235/233/225. Then 66139 with the following oil service: 870234/ 276/ 312/ 200/ 317/ 254/ 339/ 309/ 315/ 303/ 296/ 278/ 341/ 330/ 208/ 337/ 213/ 323/ 240/ 255/ 273/ 321/ 274/ 308, 85963/ 49/ 64, 82209/ 12. Then the first of two strange Freightliner services, using the 369xxx aggregate hoppers on coal! Westbound was 66544 with the following consist: 369041/ 008/ 002/ 056/ 119/ 064/ 121/ 085/ 068/ 042/ 060/ 069. Then 66129 with another oil service: 870289/ 222/ 215/ 332/ 217/ 239/ 230/ 329/ 259/ 334/ 306/ 277/ 211/ 298/ 204/ 252/ 266/ 220/ 245/ 233, 85970/ 55/ 46, 82762. A small eastbound Enterprise working was then noted in the charge of 66035: 964035, 3073, 3068, 33.70.2795.335. Another GBRf coal headed by 66723: 371032/013/100/031/097/090/103/
098/093/104/105/042/112/109/114/113/108/035/106/111/096/102/024/039. Then the second of the "strange" Freightliner coal working lead by 66547 consisting of: 369036/ 031/ 050/ 035/ 027/ 058/ 026/ 059/ 089/ 021/ 118/ 051. Next up was the westbound Enterprise headed by 66139. Its consist being: 70061, 58264, 88032, 31.80.4667.081/ 068, 610225/ 226, 81.70.4908.144, 43.87.4333.050/ 034/ 031/ 015/ 0343/ 036. Another oil service, this time hauled by Freightliner 66616, with the following in tow: 88053/074/025/027/171/052/024/146/155/034/167/022/075/173/030/170/ 073/049/029/061/036/055/068/166/145/077/072/043, 871002/004 (these last two vehicles being two of a class of only six bogie tanks in Freightliner green livery). Noted next was 66078 with the following rake of MEAs (which I believe to be the coal service to the cement plant at Rugby): 391531/311/598/561/256/272/228/468/464/535/697/362/112/330/299/

Interspersed into all the freight are the passenger services - an hourly Newark-Grimsby using East Midlands trains class 153s and the hourly Manchester Airport-Cleethorpes service using Trans-Pennine class 185s (although one of these services on the day I was there was worked by 170.309).
A pub serving food Adjacent to the station and a chip shop 100 yards away, toilets at the bottom of the station drive and what more could you wish for! Great spot.

PRESERVATION & INDUSTRIAL MATTERS
Yeovil Steam Centre, junction station (R.W.Giles) (05/09/09)
The site was closed, but Ex.BR 50050 was present outside the main shed undergoing a return to running order overhaul. Also, an 0-4-0 loco underframe was present in the turntable area. Visible in the distance, opposite the NR signal box in Maybank sidings, six 'stored' MkII's were visible, one carrying the First/GW green and grey, assumed to be 9492 and five in former Virgin Red colours. 'Official lists' have seven coaches (including 9492) listed here, the numbers being: 3354, 3402, 3425, 5920, 6002, and 6181.
