01/07 66150 was noted pushing the Wednesday's only 6C90 Newport ADJ - Avonmouth trip over the Chittening Estate branch at 11:06, prior to off-loading with 'propelling' movements container cabin flat 610290 leading the train's formation.
02/07 66585 with the 6M04 11:26 departure to Rugeley P.S., was unusually routed via Bristol Parkway with a loco run round, regaining it's normal route North via the Severn Tunnel at Patchway.
08/07 66100 worked the 6C90 and return 6C89 12:22 Avonmouth Chittening Estate - Newport ADJ trip, with 66186 performing this duty seven days later.
20/07 31285 + 999602 + 9701 passed St. Andrews Road at 11:23 on a 2Z08 Severn Beach test working inplace of an unavailable unit 950001.
21/07 66512 worked the 6M55 07:20 Avonmouth - Rugeley P.S. through Hallen Marsh junction at 08:07 (72 minutes late) and 66507 headed what was to be the final Rugeley P.S. coal departure (6M04) prior to a move for these trains back to Portbury.

Bristol Parkway, Pilning and Westerleigh

01/07 HST power car 43025 passed Pilning at 09:17 hauling a single barrier coach 6348 on a 0Z74 Landore - St. Phillips Marsh move. Also during the morning, both of First/GWs final refurbished HST power cars were recorded in service: 43056 on the rear of the 06:30 Swansea - Paddington and 43053 again, on the rear of the 07:59 Swansea - Paddington (with 43151 leading) through Pilning at 09:28. The 6M61 09:16 Stoke Gifford - Rugeley P.S. (which is loaded at Avonmouth for a 03:00 departure to recess at Stoke Gifford) was also noted passing at 09:00 behind 66525.
02/07 The 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh fuel tanks were 'caped', but a return 6Z47 Westerleigh -Robeston train of empties ran behind 60013.
04/07 Stabled week-end FLHH locos at Parkway were: 66556 and 66585, being joined by 66523 by the evening period during the following day.
09/07 DRS 66434 + 66419 passed Parkway at 15:17 with the 6M67 14:02 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks. Later, the NRMT HST set running as 1Z17 17:30 Derby - Taunton passed at 19:17, formed with power cars 43062 + 43014.
10/07 The NRMT was again reported through Parkway as 1Z20 05:56 Old Oak Common - Derby (via Swansea), passing times for Newport being at 08:23 and 11:25 on the return. Also, during the day 158951 called with a diverted 14:30 Cardiff Central - Portsmouth Harbour service at 15:22, 66953 passed at 16:52 with a 6Z75 13:38 Jersey Marine (FLHH) - Croft Quarry loaded stone and 31233 was reported as stabled on a test working during part of the afternoon.
13/07 The 6B47 return Westerleigh - Robeston empty fuel tanks were reported as failed in Haresfield loop, 66165 arriving to assist the train forward which was recorded later passing Newport at 00:02 (265 minutes late!). Two other workings during the day through Pilning were: 66027 on a return three wagon HTA trip from south Wales - Avonmouth (Severn Tunnel Junction 16:37) and 66621 on 6Z49 16:00 Moreton-on-Lugg - Reading West loaded stone (Severn Tunnel junction 18:42, 29 minutes late).
14/07 60022 was de-allocated on the 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh loaded fuel tanks in favour of 66165. 66176 arrived as 0Z47 light-engine to Westerleigh to return the 6B47 empties to Robeston later in the afternoon. A further FLHH stone working was recorded behind 66602 as 6Z49 Moreton-on-Lugg - Reading West through Parkway during the early afternoon.
15/07 66186 was on the evening 6M17 Newport ADJ - Wembley 'enterprise' freight service.
17/07 66561 powered the 6M61 09:16 Stoke Gifford - Rugeley P.S. loaded coal and 66142 was later noted with the 6M17 Newport ADJ - Wembley 'enterprise'.
18/07 A combination of two light-engine loco moves found eight DBS Class 66 locos passing through Pilning together at 16:23!! A 0Y69 Margam - Eastleigh with 66135 + 66188 + 66189 + 66005 + 66040 was combined with 0Y66, a Newport - Eastleigh move, formed with 66157 + 66131 + 66158 onwards from Newport.
20/07 Five locos seen this evening only two on "booked" duties these being 66005 (6M17) ADJ - Wembley Enterprise service and 66031 (6A29) Mod Liner. 66522 in the yard at the head of MGR empties and 66523 passed through with MGR empties. 66230 work through light engine towards Bristol.
21/07 66523 on the 4V22 09:15 Rugeley P.S. - Stoke Gifford yard which had passed Little Mill at 16:05 (99 late) failed in the Severn Tunnel at 18:15 (192 late) being assisted forward by 66520 passing Patchway at 18:40. 66522 was also recorded through here earlier at 18:20 on stone wagons towards South Wales.
23/07 66560 noted stabled in the yard at the head of MGR empties and another FL Cl66 noted further back in the yard but couldn't be identified. 66510 worked through with MGR empties for Portbury (4V09?). Portbury - Tyne Yard car train, (6X52), was worked by 66037 and ADJ - Wembley Enterprise service (6M17) by 66005.
23/07 With the failure of an HST set on the First/GW 10:31 Cheltenham - Paddington service at Kemble, several diversions took place via Parkway, notably 150279 and SWT's 'hire' 158890 on Swindon - Cheltenham local services and more unusually 66074 which appeared at 13:11 on 6A32 13:25 Ashchurch - Didcot MoD train running via Bath and Box.
24/07 GBRf 66723 passed Parkway at 08:35 with a 5V66 23:59 (Wed) Kilmarnock (Barclay's sidings) - Laira stock move formed 6330, 42382 (ex. 12128), 42383 (ex. 12172), 6336. Later 31285 passed at 09:44 on an up test working and DRS 57012 was seen in the up loop at 11:35 light-engine.
27/07 66060 and a failed 60059 passed Parkway at 16:40 on the 6B33 Theale - Robeston fuel empties. Only 66547 seen this evening with MGR empties for Portbury. There was additional HST activity, in both directions, due to problems at Bathampton junction, plus a sighting of the latest "hired hand" 158881, as Arriva had requested the return of a loan unit.
28/07 At Pilning, WCRC 57601 appeared at 12:38 on a 2Z01 Paddington - Swansea inspection saloon (999506), the return being 2Z02 14:24 Swansea - Paddington. 66602 was on the 6A21 Theale - Pengam loaded stone, returning as 6Z21 14:45 Theale (La Farge) - Pengam empties.
29/07 The 4V50 arrived at it's destination at 11:23 (188 late) behind 66536 which had suffered problems in the Magor area eventually becoming a failure and was left as an unidentified rescue loco, which had run light to Wentlooge, returned the 4O51 to Millbrook during the afternoon.
30/07 DRS 66428 + 66427 passed Westerleigh junction at 08:38 (191 late) with the 6V74 Crewe - Bridgwater nuclear flasks, which had been diverted via Stoke, Nuneaton, Birmingham International, Hagley and Worcester en-route due to cabling problems in the Stafford area. 66146 passed Parkway at 16:15 on the 6B33 Theale - Robeston empty fuel tanks and 66186 was on the 6M17 Newport - Wembley 'enterprise' freight. The 4V22 09:15 Rugeley P.S. - Stoke Gifford sidings with 66598 was again delayed in the Crewe area, having arrived at 15:27 (222 late). The train was still present here at 16:30.
31/07 Royal 67005 top n'tailing 67025 were recorded at Patchway at 14:38 with the 2C79 14:00 Cardiff Central - Taunton First/GW local passenger service.

Bristol Temple Meads, Kingsland Road and Barton Hill

01/07 66552 worked a diverted 6C73 12:45 Westbury - Taunton Fairwaters departmental move via Bristol during the afternoon.
02/07 Kingsland Road held 66523 and 66614, with 31233 and a test train at 07:15. Later at Temple Meads, 66171 worked Portbury - Barton Hill light-engine (having earlier brought in a car train) believed for a Barton Hill -Avonmouth repaired HTA wagon move, 37609 + 37610 departed at 15:03 on the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks, 31233 (formed with driving van 9703) worked 4Z08 17:55 Kingsland Road - Newport test train (via Bath following a reverse at Bedminster) and 66100 was noted in the station at 18:00 on the Thursday's only 6V77 (recoded from 6Z71) 13:22 Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey china clay empties. Also, the Arriva XC 1V44 06:30 Leeds - Plymouth service was noted with power cars 43366 + 43310, the latter 'being on hire' from National Express and Advenza 66841 was reported as stabled in Temple Meads light-engine during the day.
03/07 The 6C73 Westbury - Taunton departmental was again diverted via Bristol behind 66615, being reported through Bath at 12:34 and Parson's Street at 13:03 (49 early). A Saltburn Railtours organised 'Bath Spa Express' (1Z22 08:10 Saltburn - Bath) was top n'tailed by 47826 + 47802, passing Bristol East at 15:06 formed with c/stock: 3143, Bassenthwaite (549), 3136 Diana, Windermere (505), Ullswater (504), Ennerdale Water (552), 3105 Julia, Grasmere (548), 99680. On arrival at Bath the stock was booked to run 5Z22 15:30 Bath - Southall ECS, but was delayed, along with a number of other services, due to the brakes failure of HST power car 43028 (working with 43042) on the 1A21 14:30 Temple Meads - Paddington First/GW service in the station at Bath. The defective HST set was eventually moved to Bathampton loop. being recorded here at 16:08, at one stage it was rumoured the Saltburn train was going to run wrong line back to Bristol using the rear Class 47 as power! Also recorded during the day were;- 31233 on a further test working running 4Z08 16:56 Kingsland Road - Barton Hill via the Temple Meads through lines and Bristol West and East junctions. Over at St. Phillips Marsh, MPV set 98911 + 98961 was observed stabled. A check on the day's Arriva XC HST services found the following 43321+43301 (with set XC01) - 1V44 06:30 Leeds-Plymouth/ 1S21 12:21 Plymouth-Glasgow Central. 43378+43304 (XC05) - 1V46 06:32 York - Plymouth/ 1S55 13:21 Plymouth - Edinburgh Waverley. 43366+43285 (XC02) - 1V50 06:08 Edinburgh Waverley-Plymouth/ 1E63 15:21 Plymouth-Leeds. 43303+43207 (XC03) - 1V54 06:32 Dundee - Plymouth/ 1E73 17:21 Plymouth - Leeds. 'Hire' National Express power cars 43308 + 43319 (XC04) were used on the 1V64 13:07 (FO) Edinburgh Waverley - Plymouth, which suffered brake problems at Dunbar on coach 45004 and was running well over 60 minutes late.
04/07 67016 with 67017, top n'tailed the 2072 09:09 Bristol TM - Weymouth and 2V67 16:55 return First/GW 'bucket & spade hire' relief and 'hire' National Express power cars 43308 and 43319 were used on the 2N00 06:30 Plymouth - Newquay and 1S47 09:30 Newquay - Dundee Arriva XC services, being noted passing Worle (Weston-super-Mare) at 13:13. 66555 was on the morning 6A21 Pengam - Theale loaded stone and 66187 brought in the 'Torbay Express' stock as 5Z98 17:05 Eastleigh - Barton Hill ECS, returning as 0Z98 19:34 Barton Hill - Eastleigh light-engine, both ways routed via Bath. 'Torbay Express' steam loco new build 'A1' 60163 Tornado arrived as 5Z72 10:16 Tyseley - Barton Hill loco and support coach (via Oxford and Swindon) being recorded passing Bath at 14:24. Empty MGR noted en-route to Portbury behind 66176 at 09:55.
05/07 The first 'Torbay Express' of the 2009 season was headed by steam 60163 Tornado as 1Z27 09:15 Temple Meads - Kingswear noted through Yatton at 09:33 (and reported to have arrived 17 minutes early at Paignton!) and 1Z28 17:17 return with a full rake of maroon c/stock:- 14007 (loco support), 4946, 4949, 5008, 4996, 4998, 1813, 3144, 3141, 3146, 21245. Also recorded at Yatton during the morning was a lengthy westbound HOBC working top n'tailed by 66622 and 66615 at 09:56.
06/07 The Saltburn Railtours 'Bath Spa Express', top n'tailed by 47826 + 47804 returned North through Yate at 11:50 as 1Z23 10:55 Bath - Saltburn. The ECS had arrived at Bath as 5Z23 08:50 ex. Southall.
07/07 66553 worked 6Z21 and return 6M37 Earles (Hope sidings) - Moorswater cement, 66110 headed a 6Z86 Uskmouth - Westbury empty stone service (Newport 16:48) and DRS 37602 arrived at Taunton at 17:22, via Westbury ready for a north-bound departmental working during the following day. The First/GW 17:10 Weston-super-Mare - Paddington First/GW service was reported to have called additionally at Keynsham.
08/07 DRS 37602 worked a 6Z37 09:00 Taunton - Fletton stone blower, leaving Taunton at 11:10 and noted passing Worle at 11:55. HST power cars 43092 + 43015 ran 0Z74 09:50 Laira - St. Phillips Marsh back to back, through Taunton at 11:29, the former later returning West with 43030. Earlier, 'hire' 57310 was used on the First/GW 1C99 Paddington - Penzance sleeper service. 57604 worked the balancing 1A40 service from Penzance to the Capital.
09/07 DRS 66419 + 66434 were paired on the 6V74 Crewe - Bridgwater flasks, arriving at it's destination with 3 FNA wagons at 06:29, having earlier been reported as passing Parkway at 05:32. The 6M67 return was noted passing Brent Knoll (Highbridge) at 14:19, again formed with 3 FNAs. Also, later 66021 on the 6Z71 (still unchanged to as 6V77!) the 13:22 Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey china clay empties were noted in Temple Meads at 17:20. First/GW, SWTs 'hire' unit 158881 was noted at Bath at 21:08 with the 20:38 Westbury - Temple Meads service. The NRMT HST set, with power cars 43062 + 43014 also passed Bath at 21:20 as 1Z17 20:40 (ThO) Taunton - Old Oak Common.
10/07 66030 seen today at the same time and on the same working as described for 4/7/09. 67025 replaced 67016 on the First/GW loco-hauled 'hire' service, to join 67017. The overnight First/GW sleeper services were reported in the hand of 57605 (1C99) and 57604 (1A40). 31233 was noted with a three coach test train on the former Bath Road depot spur at 08:13 and later in the day SWT 'hire' 158890 with 153380 were paired on the First/GW 17:31 Cheltenham - Westbury service.
11/07 The 6M60 00:30 Plymouth Tavistock yard - Bescot china clay service was worked by 66091. 67016 + 67017 top n'tailed the 2O72/2V67 Bristol - Weymouth and return 'relief' service. The Arriva XC, National Express 'hire' services 1V45 07:00 Manchester - Newquay and 1M70 15:22 retun was worked by 43239 + 43316 with coaching set EC58. A Pastime Rail 'Golden hind' trip from Bristol - Plymouth and return featuring steam 60163 Tornado was cancelled. Two stone trains seen within 5 minutes in the late afternoon, 66187 southbound at 17:10 and then 66003 heading north.
12/07 Steam 60163 Tornado was again on the 'Torbay Express', the loco being reported to have passed it's 10,000 mile mark on the outward journey in the Dawlish area! Later, a 6Y11 HOBC engineer's was reported at Temple Meads at 10:46 top n'tailed by 66622 + 66615, the previous evenings outward working being 6Y11 21:36 Taunton Fairwater - Chippenham. The 1C99 First/GW Paddington - Penzance sleeper service was part worked by an HST set with power cars 43021 + 43010, due to three of the four First/GW Class 57/6s being out of traffic. Serviceable 57604 was on the 1A40 Penzance - Paddington working.
13/07 57604 worked a First/GW 5Z79 10:00 Old Oak Common - Penzance ECS sleeper move, via Westbury, following the problems during the previous day.
14/07 First/GW 'hired' in 57312 to cover the 1C99 Paddington - Penzance sleeper service!
15/07 57312 returned on the 1A40 Penzance - Paddington sleeper. 158890, on 'hire' to First/GW worked the 18:34 Temple Meads - Westbury service.
16/07 DRS 66428 + 66425 arrived at Bridgwater at 07:25 with 2 FNA flask wagons to form the afternoon 6M67 loaded nuclear flasks to Crewe. 66137 was later on the 6V77 (ex. 6Z71!!) 13:22 Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey empty china clay train. The over night 1C99 First/GW sleeper was reported as headed by 57605 (with 57312 attached to the rear 'DIT'!).
18/07 Southbound "Departmental" service seen at 18:00 with 66051 at its head. The First/GW loco-hauled Weymouth 'relief' was formed 67025 + 6046, 6064, 6117, 9508 + 67017. 66137 was on the morning 6M60 Plymouth - Bescot freight. 158787 + 158766 + 150281 + 158748 formed the 06:07 Bristol - Portsmouth Harbour service (150281 + 158748 being detached en-route to work the 08:22 Southampton - Worcester service) and the 'hire' National Express power cars in use on the 1V45/1M70 Arriva XC services were 43238 + 43319 (with set EC54).
19/07 Steam 60163 Tornado again worked the 1Z27/1Z28 Bristol - Kingswear and return 'Torbay Express', and later a 6Y11 09:00 Wootton Bassett - Taunton Fairwater return HOBC working passed Worle at 10:14 top n'tailed by 66622 + 66623.
21/07 The DBS (EWS) managers train was noted in Temple Meads at 10:14 working as 1Z05 09:48 Parkway - Plymouth Tavistock yard (having earlier run 5Z05 05:40 Toton - Parkway ECS) formed 67029 (EWS silver) + 10211, 10546, 11039 (all in EWS plum), 82146 (EWS silver), being later noted passing Yatton at 10:31. The return was 1Z06 14:10 Tavistock yard - Parkway (Yatton 16:27), going on to form 5Z06 16:59 Parkway - Toton ECS. The reason for the visit was reported as to deal with staff redundancies at Tavistok yard following the loss of the EMR scrap metal contract. Other reports for the day included: 66103 (not A1 60163! - ed) shunting the 'Torbay Express' coaches during the morning, 31285 on a 2Z08 test train (running inplace of 950001), departing Temple Meads at 12:48 (1minute early), being later recorded into Yatton loop at 13:03 (5 early) and departing at 13:19 (5 early!) and 66527 on the 6Z21 and return 6M37 Moorswater cement. A second test train was present in Temple Meads headed by 31454 with driving van 9714 , which worked 4Z10 12:08 Kingsland Road - Kingsland Road via Bedminster, Bristol East and Barton Hill! The train was later reported through Bath at 19:51 heading towards Swindon.
22/07 DRS 37682 was de-allocated, being replaced by 57012 on an 0Z40 07:05 Crewe Gresty bridge -Plymouth driver route learner calling in Temple Meads around mid-day. During the evening period, 31454 worked a 4Z71 18:57 Bristol Kingsland road - Reading test train passing North Somerset junction at 19:07 (5 early) and 67017, which suffered a wheel-flat (having activated the Severn Tunnel junction hot box detector - the train being allowed to continue onwards at 50 mph) whilst working the 2C89 19:00 Cardiff - Taunton First/GW 'hire' loco-hauled service (with 67025), being terminated at Temple Meads where the 1C26 18:30 Paddington - Weston-super-Mare HST (formed with power cars 43015 + 43030) was held to cover. 142001 + 143618 later formed the 2M72 21:11 Exeter St. Davids - Temple Meads First/GW local service.
23/07 GBRf 66723, having run 0V66 Wembley - Laira light-engine (via Westbury) the previous day, returned a 5S66 09:00 Laira - Kilmarnock Barclay's sidings stock move formed 6336 (barrier) + 40803 + 6330 (barrier) passing Worle at 10:30 (80 early!) and Filton at 12:10. Earlier, Royal 67005 (off a Kensington Olympia,' Tatton flower show' Northern Belle dining trip from Cardiff, top n'tailed with 67029) had replaced 67017. During the afternoon, DRS 66425 + 66428 passed Highbridge at 12:45 with the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks and 66230 was on the 6V77 (ThO) Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey china clay empties. First/GW DMU set 150234 had started off the loco-hauled diagram up until the 2Y10 09:12 Parkway - Weston-super-Mare working which was terminated at Temple Meads for the 'new' Class 67 loco and stock combination to take over. An Arriva XC service alteration, due to late running, saw the 1E73 17:32 Plymouth - Leeds start from Newton Abbot formed with the stock (as booked) off the 1V54 06:32 Dundee - Plymouth which was running an hour down.
24/07 31285 returned north with test train as 2Z08 03:25 Exeter - Derby (via Barnstaple) in place of test unit 950001, being recorded via Weston-super-Mare seen in the main station at 08:38 (8 early). Having worked 0Z40 10:50 Plymouth - Goodrington C.S., 0Z41 12:16 Goodrington - Goodrington (via Newton Abbot) and 0Z42 Goodrington - Plymouth, the previous day, DRS 57012 returned North as 0Z42 09:13 Plymouth - Crewe passing Worle junction at 11:03. Steam 70013 Oliver Cromwell arrived in Bristol for railtour duty as 0Z71 16:00 Didcot - Barton Hill passing Bath around 17:40 and earlier GBRf 66723 passed Worle at 10:23 on a 5V66 Kimarnock (Barclay's) - Laira refurbished stock move.
25/07 Two steam hauled railtour departures from Temple Meads took place during the morning. 67003 arrived with Pathfinder Tour's 'Towy Tornado' (1Z60 06:10 Eastleigh - Carmarthen, and later 1Z63 16:47 return), for 60163 Tornado to work onwards with c/stock:- 14007 (support), 21272, 3098, 3122, 1671, 3112, 3102, 3140,3107, 1863, 5350, 5322. The Class 67 returned the train to Southampton on the return to Bristol. The second departure 'The Devonian' (1Z70 06:09 Birmingham International - Plymouth and later 1Z73 16:30 return) organised by the Railway Touring Company arrived behind WCRC 47760 for 70013 Oliver Cromwell (noted passing Yatton at 09:40) with coaching stock 17019 (support), 4940, 99328, 3096, 3115, 99348, 99121, 99127, 99316, the Class 47 following the train as 0Z47 light-engine. Also recorded during the day, were 67005 + 67025 top n'tailing the 2O72/2V67 First/GW Summer Saturday Weymouth 'relief' (67025 being noted carrying BK shed stickers!) and National Express power cars 43295 + 43296 (and coaches) on 'hire' to Arriva XC with the 1V45 Manchester - Newquay and 1M70 return.
26/07 Steam 60163 Tornado worked the final sell-out 'Torbay Express' of the month, with another early arrival time of 12:01 (12 minutes) at Paignton. Following rail-tour duty the previous day steam 70013 Oliver Cromwell with support coach returned late morning to Didcot via Bath. The 15:06 Penzance - Temple Meads First/GW service was noted with 153368 + 142009 on arrival in Bristol during the evening.
27/07 DRS 37601 + 37603 on an additional 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe did not depart until 17:34! An afternoon signalling failure in the Bathampton junction area saw road bus connections for Chippenham and Swindon from Bath, aswell as diverted services via Parkway. The First/GW 15:19 Parkway - Bath service was reported as stopped at Keynsham and returned back to Temple Meads because of the problem!
28/07 142001 and 142009 were visible on St. Phillips Marsh depot during the day. 150281 appeared to be a failure at Platform 5 during the morning at Temple Meads, 153368 being attached during the early afternoon to move the set.
28/07 66005 noted running light engine towards Barton Hill at 16:10.
29/07 GBRf 66713 passed Uphill junction (Weston-super-Mare) at 00:20 with the overnight 4V11 Peterborough - Taunton Fairwater concrete sleeper train. Locos and coaches working seen today at 09:20 heading south using 67005 + 67025.
30/07 66041 passed Lawrence Hill at 18:45 on the 6V77 (ThO) Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey china clay empties. Earlier, DRS 66427 + 66428 departed Bridgwater at 14:56 on the 6M67 nuclear flasks to Crewe.
31/07 At 07:00, Kingsland Road sidings held:- 31454 (with a test train). 66509. 66603.

Gloucester

01/07 66201 was on the 6B36 Didcot yard - Ashchurch MoD trip, 37038 + 37069 were paired on the 6V73 Crewe - Berkeley nuclear flasks and SWT 'hire' 158886 with A separate 150279 were working the Cheltenham - Swindon First/GW passenger turns.
02/07 Advenza 66842 was stabled at Gloucester.

With an extension of two years life for Oldbury power station, the use of the Sharpness branch line for the once weekly nuclear flask train would seem secure. Land could be purchased nearby for a new reactor, although a decommissioning programme for the existing reactors would take up to 20 years to complete. The 6V19 17:20 Scunthorpe - Margam overnight 'enterprise' freight service has provided some interesting motive power during the month including;- 66165 + 66102 (01/07), 66193 + 66001 (04/07), 60059 (onwards from Llanwern) on 16/07 and 66040 + 60085 (18/07).

Portbury Branch Line

20/07 Fastline resumed their Ratcliffe coal operation running as 6M18 05:00 Portbury - Ratcliffe P.S. (MTWO) and 6Z99 19:00 Portbury - Ratcliffe P.S. (MThO). An unusual visitor was 31285 with a 2Z08 Derby - Westbury test working formed with test coach 999602 + driving van 9701. The working was running around 30 minutes late, and on the return briefly stopped just after 10:00 at the old Pill station platform, where some train checks took place. The train was running as a replacement for an unavailable test unit 950001. This was only the third Class 31 day-light appearance over the branch since re-opening, 31285 was in fact putting in a second appearance, having with 31233 worked the successful 'Coal Stone Haul' railtour over the line in June 2007.
21/07 Freightliner restarted their Portbury coal movements with 66522 working the 6M07 03:00 departure to Rugeley P.S. 66561 was later recorded passing Temple Meads at 09:03 with what was assumed to have been the 6M55 06:56 departure.
31/07 66177 worked the 6X52 17:33 Portbury Auto terminal - Mossend loaded car service leaving at 17:18 (15 early). This loco carries silver painted cab roofs, reported as a trial to keep the interior cab conditions cooler for the driver.

Taunton

26/07 66510 was noted de-railed at the west-end of Fairwater yard, during the late morning with 66522 assisting the re-railing effort. 73133 was parked nearby.

Westbury

The 6M22 Westbury - Stud Farm ballast empties have been recorded with;- 66612 (01/07), 66612 (06/07), 66623 (16/07), 66507 (30/07).
16/07 The Stud Farm loco normally runs light-engine from Kingsland Road during the morning, for example blue-livered 66623 passed Bath at 10:30 on this date.

FREIGHT REVIEW

It soon comes round to the time of the month to compose my little effort regarding the freight scene. Well, not much to really get to grips with this time due to the Bank Holiday and holidays in general for my companions in crime. Just the usual haunts again this month. I suppose that the main talking point regarding the railways this month is the loss of the Stobart/Tesco contract by DRS, the said contract going to DB Schenker - the promise of electric-hauled services throughout no doubt having quite a selling point. Whether anything to do with this forthcoming contract, but there seems to have been quite a bit of movement of Class 92 locomotives in evidence on the West Coast Main Line, none more so than on the evening of 24th August at Nuneaton when 90020 was noted heading south on the empty automotive service with 92007, 92042 and 92036 contained in the consist. Noted that same evening DB Schenker class 66 loco 66129 with the following consist of wagons: 33.70.4938.710/ 736/ 335, 31.70.4938.028, 609070/ 087/ 100/ 017/ 076/ 052/ 012/ 042/ 035/ 010/ 002/ 054, 610327/ 328/ 125/ 126, 93450. This service appears to be the Ditton--Wembley rerouted via Whitacre and Arley Tunnel to rejoin the West Coast Main Line at Nuneaton. It formerly ran south on the West Coast Main Line direct and was normally class 92-hauled. Nice to see 86501 still plying its trade. This locomotive is a regular sight during the late afternoon heading north through Nuneaton. That evening 14 freight services were noted in the three hours I was present. Locomotives involved being Freightliner 66543, 86501, 66518, 66540, 66567, 66576, 66579 and 66591; DB Schenker 90020, 66129; DRS 66412, 66427, 66415; Colas Rail 56312. Incidentally, the W.H.Malcolm service hauled by DRS 66415 was a service noted heading SOUTH at 2010! As all the DRS services had already been accounted for on this particular date no-one had any explanation as to what this service was! Track machine 77327 was the other item noted on this date. Leicester on 27th August opened with the sight of an early-morning Nottingham--Kingswear charter in the charge of West Coast Railways locomotives 47787 and 47760. In the evening on the same date 66617 was noted heading north on the Hope Cement service consisting of Lafarge bogie cement vehicles 12447/434/442/437/434/404/427/414/429/400/418/440/439/419/441/410. Following close on its heels, also northbound, was 66621 with the following bogie yellow boxes: 31.70.5992.093/098/100/026/056/102/085/ 080/094/083/042/018/021/078/045/091/120/110/119/097/101. Then not five minutes later, also northbound, was DB Schenker 66130 with the usual rake of bogie tanks on the return Colnbrook-Lindsey empties. I don't know, hardly any freight in the day at Leicester then three in fifteen minutes! Off to Barnetby for the day this coming Thursday (17th September) so hopefully it will be busy so I have plenty to report next time. Enjoy the hobby and more next month.

GW Electrification
The Great Western Mainline between Paddington-Temple Meads and onwards to Cardiff and Swansea is to be electrified at a cost of 1 billion, with the work expected to be completed between Bristol and the Capital by 2017 giving an additional saving of 12 minutes on journey times. The work will take up to eight years to complete and will see a fleet of new foreign built electric trains which will replace the diesel engine powered HSTs (now approaching their 35th year on front line passenger duties in 2011) also helping the Government meet environmental targets . With a small part of the 118 mile route already electrified between Paddington and Heathrow airport, the remainder would be converted in sections at a cost of 800,000 a mile. Work is to start immediately, with the connection between Temple Meads and Parkway, via Filton bank also expected to be included in the scheme, although the mainline west of Bristol to Weston-super- Mare and Taunton will remain unaltered at present. 40% of Britain's rail network is electrified, which includes most of the South-East, and both mainline routes from London to Edinburgh and Glasgow - electric trains producing 20-30% less carbon emissions than those with diesel engines.
