02/06 66059 worked the 6C63 Westbury - Avonmouth import stone empties and return 6C64 loaded, which was recorded passing Brentry late at 18:35. Other locos recorded with this Tuesday's only duty during the month have been;- 66213 (09/06), 59005 (16/06), 59201 (23/06) and 66002 (30/06).
09/06 The Freightliner Heavy-haul Rugeley power station coal workings were moved over the water to Avonmouth Royal Edward dock, with two loading areas available (one at the old Bennett's loading site and another in the old LPG tank area). Around 200,000 tonnes of coal is believed stock-piled in the dock, operations could remain here for around 12 weeks. There were problems associated with the first day, one of the workings being reported as leaving empty (but may possibly have been a trial working ? ). The on going booked departures were 07:20 (6M55, previously the 06:56 ex. Portbury), 11:26 (6M04, previously the 10:25 ex. Portbury) and 21:39 (6M02, previously the 20:45 ex. Portbury). 66560 was the loco with train seen leaving empty with 66565 working what was assumed the 6M55 at 12:50 and later, 66510 on the 6M04, the empties of which arrived in the dock at 13:00. Split livered 'Shanks' 66522 was on the evening 6M02 departure.
10/06 66009 worked the 6C90 Newport ADJ - Avonmouth trip freight (passing through Newport at 09:37). Other locos recorded on this working during the month have been;- 66174 (17/06) and 66063 (23/06). Today's Rugeley coal locos were recorded as;- 66510 (6M55), 66540 (6M04) and 66565 (6M02).
15/06 66510 was reported to have worked the 6M02 loaded coal service through Brentry at 21:58.
16/05 59005 was unusually employed on the import stone (normally a 59/2 or 66 duty) being held at Hallen Marsh from 12:36 - 13:03 to check the driver's route knowledge as these train's are now loaded at West Wharf (to give the FLHH coal operation more space) and run direct to Acton once loaded either by Hawkridge curve (avoiding Westbury) and the Berks & Hants or via Box, Chippenham and Swindon. Today's train was formed with 18 JYA wagons. The return departure was late, not passing Brentry until 18:24, also recorded earlier here was 66563 at 17:50 with the 4C09 17:55 Stoke Gifford down yard - Avonmouth coal empties to form the 6M02 21:39 departure to Rugeley P.S.
17/06 A further FLHH coal working was reported as operating. An 03:56 Avonmouth - Rugeley P.S. (6M61 previously the 08:25 ex. Portbury), which recesses at Stoke Gifford down sidings until 09:16 then going forward as normal via the Severn Tunnel and the Marches route. Today's loco was 66508, which performed the same duty the next day and 66529 appearing on 19/06.
24/06 66063 arrived at 10:57 with the 6C90 Wednesday's only trip from Newport formed of two cargowaggons and the container flat guards van, reported in last month's Magazine. The vehicle has been identified as DBS(EWS) FCA 610290 (coupled to 610289). The permanently mounted container has cut away side entrances, complete with added hand-rails and foot-steps with an end viewing window complete with a yellow end.
26/06 66525 + 66555 arrived at 09:27 with 4C04 coal empties to form the 6M04 11:26 departure to Rugeley P.S. 66957 had meanwhile departed at 09:10 on the 6M55 07:20 departure to Rugeley P.S.
10/06 66002 unusually handled both the Avonmouth import stone and earlier the Machen stone workings during the day.
Some general news from the area has seen Didcot coal suspended until September, although power station coal continues to operate to Aberthaw alongside with the train's from Portbury. A major bridge rebuild, on the Severn Road is underway on the freight-only Hallen Marsh - Filton line near Hallen village. The project, which has been funded between South Gloucestershire Council (£300,000) and Network-Rail will see the road re-aligned and the bridge weight limit increased to 40 tonnes, however tankers from a nearby fuel depot have to take a lengthy road diversion in the meantime. It has also been reported that two stripped EMU coaches (76583 and 76613 both from set 1304) were delivered by road from Eastleigh to Sims Metals, Avonmouth docks towards the end of May for scrapping. Operating news is that an hourly First/GW Sunday passenger service (part South Gloucestershire Council funded) will run to and from Severn Beach from May 2010 instead of terminating and restarting at Avonmouth station.

Bristol Parkway, Pilning and Westerleigh
01/06 Only 66547 seen this evening, in the yard, at the head of MGR empties destined for Portbury.
04/06 66096 was on the 6Z95 12:29 Margam - Dollands Moor export steel (using SNCF covered steel coil wagons and booked MTWO this week as follows: Newport 13:57-13:59, Severn Tunnel Junction 14:15-14:31 and Pilning 14:43) and DRS 37069 + 20304 which passed Parkway at 14:05 on the 6M67 14:07 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks. More unusually, an 0V47 10:20 Eastleigh - Long Marston (via Wesbury and Bath) colourful preserved loco move which passed Parkway at 12:55 (24 minutes early) was formed 47580 (large logo) + 73006 (blue livery) + 50026 (large logo) + 50135 (load-haul colours!). 37308 was not included in the train as expected. 66547 in the yard as per 1/6, in addition 66155 (6X52) worked a car train from Portbury for Tyne Yard and 66173 (6M17) ADJ - Wembley Enterprise. NR HST put in an appearance using power cars 43014/062.
05/06 The NRMT passed through the area as 1Z20 06:19 Paddington - Swansea, later returning en-route to Derby. The outward was recorded passing Newport at 07:57.
08/06 66560 in the yard this evening, only active workings were 66053 (6A29) with the MoD "Liner". Afternoon and evening Freightliner coal empty arrivals at Parkway were;- 66510 on 4V45 11:15 Rugeley P.S. - Stoke Gifford and 66560 on 4V56 15:30 Rugeley P.S. - Stoke Gifford.
10/06 66044 failed exiting the Severn Tunnel on the 6Z95 export steel service, the rescue loco being FLHH 66952 which ran light-engine from Stoke Gifford sidings, eventually departing 131 minutes late for Parkway.
11/06 66560 in the yard joined later by 66508 (4V56) Rugeley - Stoke Gifford empty MGRs, passing through were 66098 (6M17) ADJ - Wembley Enterprise service and 66168 (6A29) Mod Liner. DRS 37605 + 37612 passed Parkway at 13:18 with the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear.
12/06 The 6V98 Lindsey - Westerleigh loaded fuel tanks were reported as a failure with 60040 en-route, 60065 being the assisting loco.
13/06 UK Railtour's 'Tower - Towy' railtour (1Z59 07:08 Paddington - Carmarthen and 1Z56 15:56 return) was top n'tailed by DBS livered 59206 + 59205, with c/stock;- 21269, 3121, 3123, 1691, 3147, 4998, 5008, 1813, 5292. in use, passing Patchway at 09:42 (8 late).
15/06 60074 failed at Briton Ferry with the 6B13 Robeston - Westerleigh loaded fuel tanks, 60013 being the rescue loco, the train eventually passing Newport at 12:17 with 60013 only in charge. Later 66184 passed Parkway on 6Z97 Hither Green - Port Talbot Grange sidings JNA stone empties. Similar to 11/06/09, 66529 in the yard, 66510 (4V56) Rugeley - Stoke Gifford MGR empties, 66098 (6M17) ADJ - Wembley and 66115 (6A29) MoD Liner.
18/06 Strange, unexplained First/GW HST activity during the early afternoon, saw the 12:30 Swansea - Paddington service arrive in the new platform 4 at 14:10, eventually leave behind the 13:55 Cardiff Central - Paddington service (which left at 14:32) at 14:45!! Also recorded during the afternoon were 57003 + 57008 (a Class debut), paired on the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks at 15:20 (having departed Bridgwater around 12:30). A large heavy-lift road crane still remains in the down side area at Stoke Gifford lifting FLHH coal wagons for bogie repairs as required.
19/06 FLHH cement workings saw;- 66548 on the 6V20 20:55 Hope (Earles sidings) - Westbury cement tanks (due Parkway 03:55) and 66523 on 6V91 22:17 Hope sidings - Theale (due here at 05:01). An afternoon freight record was 66156 on 6Z98 12:23 Port Talbot Grange sidings - Lea Interchange loaded stone (Severn Tunnel junction 14:34) and later 66078 worked 6A16 13:35 Haverfordwest - Didcot MoD vehicle empties, late evening.
20/06 What could have been a serious trespassing incident took place near Parkway between 09:00 - 09:30 and was captured on film by a local rail photographer, the photos appearing in the Bristol Evening Post and Rail Magazine. A 38 year old woman appeared to have wandered off the end of Parkway station in the Winterbourne direction eventually being picked up by the driver of the Arriva XC 1V44 06:00 Leeds - Plymouth HST service and taken back to the station. British Transport Police are investigating the incident and a prosecution for rail trespass may follow.
21/06 66002 passed Parkway at 21:21 with what was believed to have been the 6Z95 (Sun) Margam - Dollands Moor export steel (in the usual covered wagons) whilst 66523 and 66952 were stabled on the downside.
22/06 66110 powered the 6M17 Newport ADJ - Wembley 'enterprise' freight service. Slight difference tonight, 66523 in yard, 66952 (4V56) Rugeley - Stoke Gifford and 66059 (6A29) MoD Liner.
25/06 Plans have been announced to increase covered cycle spaces from the current 32 with a new park at the station. This joint venture between First/GW, South Gloucestershire Council, Network-Rail, The West of England Partnership, the Severnside Community Rail Partnership and members of the UWE college is aimed at reducing the number of passengers using cars to reach the station. Additional new cycle routes to the station are also to be created as well as improved bus links. The number of people using the station has increased by 30% over the last five years to over 8,000 per day. Another minor variation, no loco in yard, 66066 (6M17) ADJ - Wembley, 66952 (4V56) Rugeley - Stoke Gifford again and 66201 (6A29) MoD Liner.
26/06 The last two First/GW power cars to be refurbished, 43056 + 43053 made an 0Z86 Margam - Swindon (reported through Newport at 08:02 and at Swindon at 08:50) back to back move. The pair returned West at 10:16, assumed for Landore (43025 + 43056 were also reported as to have made a similar 0Z86 Landore - Parkway and return back to back power move during the previous day). A newly converted micro-buffet coach 40114 was reported as part of the 1L23 16:55 Cardiff Central - Paddington service (in set 49, with power cars 43094 + 43012). Advenza 66841 worked north through Parkway at 10:16 on ECS ex. Temple Meads, possibly destined for Gloucester. Later, West Coast Railway's 47760 was noted stabled in Stoke Gifford down sidings during the evening with a 5Z47 ECS move from Southall formed;- 99723, 3143, 3136, 99316, 99349, 99353, 3125, 99311, 4940, 4905 for use on a steam special to Carmarthen during the following day.
29/06 47760 returned the WCRC charter stock as 5Z48 09:15 Stoke Gifford down sidings - Carnforth ECS (via Charfield, Worcester and Birmingham Snow Hill), passing Westerleigh junction at 09:49 (1 minute early). Down to two this evening, 66525 (4V56) Rugeley - Stoke Gifford and 66078 (6A29) MoD Liner.
30/06 66041 was on the now re-coded, 6L97 12:34 Port Talbot Grange sidings - Lea Interchange (Camden) loaded stone.
Bristol Temple Meads, Kingsland Road and Barton Hill
01/06 The First/GW 1A40 Penzance - Paddington overnight sleeper service was booked to run via the Weston-super-Mare loop (02:18). The 1C99 down balancing working was routed via the Berks & Hants, and via Bath. Note;- These services when reported in the past have often been included for 'the record' as both train route's often vary although both are 'booked' to pass through Temple Meads during the early hours. Also the date quoted may often refer to the actual departure day from the starting terminus, as opposed to the day the train passes through the Bristol area.
02/06 A line side fire in the Bath area saw the First/GW 1C22 16:30 Paddington - Taunton HST service delayed and the 1A28 18:00 Temple Meads - Paddington service diverted via Parkway.
04/06 67017 + 67016 passed Bridgwater at 06:24 with Barton Hill - Taunton local 'hire' passenger ECS. 20304 + 37069 passed Stapleton Road at 13:55 with the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks, whilst later during the evening, the NRMT HST formed with power cars 43062 + 43014 visited Taunton as 1Z17 via Temple Meads. The set had been reported as formed with intermediate coaches 977984, 977994, 975814, 977995 during the month. Also, 66237 was reported at Temple Meads at 18:00 on the 6Z71 (ThO) 13:22 Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey china clay empties.
05/06 The Locos & Coaches working was seen headed southbound at 14:50 utilising 67016 + 67017.
06/06 Two railtour visits to Temple Meads during the day were;- DBS (not DRS locos as expected) 37401 + 37670 paired on Compass Tours 'Devonian' (1Z31 05:34 Preston - Paignton and 1Z45 16:28 return) with c/stock: 35469, 3340, 3344, 3386, 3345, 3325, 1250, 6176, 5961, 6054, 5987 just after 10:00 (the return being recorded in the Weston-super-Mare area around 18:15) and steam 70013 Oliver Cromwell on a 1Z82 08:25 Poole - Bristol and 1Z83 17:54 return. Also recorded were 67016 + 67017 top n'tailing the 2O72 09:09 Temple Meads - Weymouth and 2V67 16:55 return First/GW 'bucket & spade' relief. The 1V45 07:00 Manchester - Newquay and 1M70 15:22 Newquay - Manchester was reported as in the hands of an Arriva XC set (with power cars 43301 + 43384) in place of what had been a 'hired' National Express HST working.
08/06 150233 worked the evening Bristol - Taunton (leaving Temple Meads at 19:55) part of the First/GW Class 67 hauled 2C89 19:00 service from Cardiff Central.
10/06 Preserved D1062 Western Courier was moved as 0V52 13:15 Kidderminster (SVR) - Bishop's Lydeard (WSR) behind GBRf 66730 for the preserved railway's 'Mixed Traffic Gala'. The move, which departed at 13:30, passed Gloucester at 15:05 (booked 16:05), Temple Meads at 15:55 (booked 16:44 - 16:48) and Yatton at 16:19. On arrival at Bishop's Lydeard, the Class 66 returned light to Taunton, stabling in platform 1, before returning with train loco 66701 on the 4L31 Taunton Fairwater - Peterborough used concrete sleepers, two days later. Also during the day, 66612 (still carrying an unbranded Freightliner green livery) was on the 6M37 Moorswater - Earles (Hope sidings) cement empties. Southbound "Hanson" stone train seen at 17:55 behind 66068.
11/06 Sellafield - Bridgwater flasks seen en route at 05:20 with 37605/612 as motive power. Later in the day at 14:45, 66012 noted light engine towards Barton Hill. Voyager 220001 was used on the 1E63 15:21 Plymouth - Leeds Arriva XC service, in place of the normal HST set. Two freight train reports were;- DRS 37605 + 37612 paired on the 6M67 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks and 66060 was on the 6Z71 13:22 (ThO) Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey china clay empties.
12/06 National Express power car 43239 started a short 'loan' period to Arriva XC, being paired with 43301 on the day's 1V50 06:08 Edinburgh - Plymouth and 1E63 15:21 Plymouth - Leeds return services.
13/06 NEX 43239 was again recorded, still with 43304 on the 1V45 07:00 Manchester - Newquay and 1M70 15:22 Newquay - Manchester return Arriva XC services. 67016 + 67017 were again used on the Saturday's Bristol - Weymouth and return diagram, whilst steam 70013 Oliver Cromwell took over from WCRC 47245 on the Railway Touring Company's 'Dartmouth Express' (1Z27 06:45 Paddington - Kingswear and 1Z28 the 16:00 return) with c/stock;- M17019 (loco support), 4927, 5009, 1863, 3144, 3110, 3107, 3140, 3124, 3098, 21272. The Class 47 remained stabled in platform 1 at Temple Meads during the day.
14/06 The 1V48 08:09 (Sun) Leeds - Plymouth and 1S59 14:21 Plymouth - Edinburgh Arriva XC services were worked by 43304 + 43239 (National Express) HST power cars. Later in the day, steam loco 70013 Oliver Cromwell ran 5Z29 17:40 Barton Hill - Bishop's Lydeard loco and support coach (M17019) for stabling between railtour duties., passing near Highbridge tender first at 18:14.
15/06 66066 was on the 6C99 Newport ADJ - St. Blazey freight service passing Nailsea & Backwell at 23:35. An unusual 'non-rail' incident during the morning found a Wessex Direct double-deck bus with around 30 passenger on board, wedged under the canopy on the Temple Meads station approach road! No one was hurt in the accident, the vehicle being eventually moved once the tyres had been deflated!
16/06 66120 noted at 14:15 with a MGR service from Portbury, and at 16:20 heading south was 66158 with a stone train. GBRf 66720 returned D1062 Western Courier as 0K52 11:10 Bishop's Lydeard - Kidderminster stopping in Yatton loop between 12:06 - 12:19 (booked 12:05 - 12:17) and passing Parkway at 13:20 (booked 13:15).
18/06 Arriva XC HST diagrams during the day were as follows 43285 (XC05) 43321 1V46 06:32 York - Plymouth/ 1S55 13:21 Plymouth - Edinburgh. 43304 (Set XC03) 43207 1V44 06:00 Leeds - Plymouth/ 1S21 12:21 Plymouth - Glasgow Central. 43366 (XC02) 43384 1V54 06:32 Dundee - Plymouth/ 1E73 17:21 Plymouth - Leeds. 66066 worked the 6Z71 13:22 (ThO) Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey freight service. The 1V50 06:08 Leeds - Plymouth and 1E63 15:21 Plymouth - Leeds services were covered by 220026.
Two workings recorded today, at 05:05 66207 seen with an empty rake of assorted car carriers destined for Portbury and from Portbury at 15:10 66089 observed with a loaded MGR.
19/06 Royal 67005 started Pathfinder Tour's epic 'Western Chieftain' (1Z52 07:03 Temple Meads - Inverness) away from Temple Meads running via Parkway, Worcester and Birmingham NS, to be replaced by mainline preserved D1015 Western Champion at Bescot. The Class 52 was then to make its debut at Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh, prior to the return two days later. Another passenger addition during the day was a Northern Belle dining trip, operating as 1Z67 Cardiff Central - Kensington Olympia (via Temple Meads and Bath) top n'tailed by 67030 + 67026. The return was 1Z68 16:28 Kensington Olympia - Cardiff, for a 5Z69 20:10 ECS move to Euston via Bath and the Berks & Hants route.
20/06 66066 + 66174 put in an early hours appearance on the 6M60 21:21 (Fri) Plymouth Tavistock yard - Bescot freight, later 66510 passed through Day's curve on the 6A21 08:06 (SO) Pengam - Theale loaded stone. 67016 + 67017 top n'tailed the 2O72 09:09 Temple Meads - Weymouth and 2V67 16:55 return (with c/stock 6117, 6064, 6008, 9508) and the 1V48 06:42 Newcastle - Penzance was noted formed with National Express 'hire' power car 43299 paired with Arriva XC 43301.
21/06 The 'hire' National Express power car 43299 reappeared (still with 43301) on Arriva XC's 09:00 (Sun) Leeds - Plymouth and 15:21 Plymouth - York (via Leeds) return. The 'Western Chieftain', 1Z54 Inverness - Temple Meads was returned late in the evening behind 66206, which had taken over from Western Champion in Birmingham.
22/06 43299 + 43301 were again recorded, this time on the 1V46 06:32 York - Plymouth and 1S55 13:21 Plymouth - Edinburgh Arriva XC services.
24/06 66031 worked 6Z86 Uskmouth - Whatley quarry stone empties via Day's curve, having earlier been recorded passing Filton Abbeywood at 16:42.
25/06 37038 + 37601 arrived at Bridgwater at 07:33 (47 late) on the 6V74 Crewe - Bridgwater nuclear flasks, returning later on the 6M67 to Crewe, 66174 was on the Thursdays Only, 6V77 (now recoded from 6Z71) 13:22 Cliffe Vale - St. Blazey china clay empties and a morning 0Z77 St. Phillips Marsh - Laira stock move was formed with back to back power cars 43191 + 43093. The newly converted micro-buffet coach 40114 (ex.42086) formed part of the First/GW 1C11 11:00 Paddington - Temple Meads (with power cars 43135 + 43015).
26/06 66027 passed Filton Abbeywood at 07:10 on 6X51 the inward loaded cars and empties for Portbury, whilst 66552 departed Temple Meads at 13:04 on a 6Z85 09:20 Taunton Fairwater - Taunton Fairwater wagon turning move via Bridgwater, Bath and Westbury. Advenza 66841 was back stabled in Temple Meads, this time occupying the former Bath Road depot stub siding, before eventually working the coaches (9525, 5906, 6168, 5866, 9497) which had been stabled in a west end station siding for several weeks, north during the morning.
27/06 66174 + 66200 were paired on the early hours 6M60 Tavistock yard - Bescot freight and 67016 + 67017 again top n'tailed the Temple Meads - Weymouth and return 'bucket & spade' extra (formed with c/stock: 6117, 6064, 6008, 9494). Spitfire Tour's 'Kernow Growler' (1Z70 05:53 Birmingham - International - Penzance and 1Z73 15:35 return) was worked by DRS 37194 + 37087 throughout with c/stock: 99128, 99328, 99318, 99317, Ullswater 504, 3148, 3113, 3098, 5229 The Green Knight, 9440, 4960, 5278 Melisande). Steam 70013 Oliver Cromwell arrived in Bristol late afternoon as 5Z13 14:37 Bishop's Lydeard - Barton Hill loco and support coach ready for railtour duty during the following day. At 06:15 Kingsland Road held the following;- 66556, 66518, 66614, 66602, 66555 with 66523, 66525 stabled at Parkway.
28/06 Steam 70013 Oliver Cromwell worked Pathfinder Tour's 'Pembroke Coast Express' (1Z70 08:15 Temple Meads - Carmarthen and 1Z72 14:48 return from Pembroke dock. Support loco 47760 (which had brought the tour stock from Southall) followed 0Z47 light-engine, and worked the 1Z71 13:35 Carmarthen - Pembroke dock part of the trip whilst Oliver Cromwell was turned on the Carmarthen triangle, prior to later working the return trip. 29/06 Steam loco 70013 returned to Southall late morning with support coach M17019 as 5Z73 off Barton Hill, being noted passing Bath around 10:50. Advenza 66841 was again stabled back in the former Bath Road depot stub. First/GW HST sets were in use on Glastonbury return pop festival extras from the Castle Cary and Westbury area.
30/06 31233 working a 4Z08 Derby - Laira ultrasonic test working was diverted via St. Phillips Marsh at 16:42 with driving van 9703 leading, being later recorded departing Temple Meads at 17:59, passing Parsons Street at 18:06 and in Yatton loop (for a 'booked' stop) between 18:30 - 18:55 to allow the First/GW 1C22 16:30 Paddington - Weston-super-Mare HST service to pass.
05/06 GBRf 66730 passed Swindon light-engine around 15:15 heading towards Gloucester via the Kemble line.
14/06 Advenza duo 66841 + 47237 were paired on the overnight 6Z95 Shipley - Cardiff Tidal scrap empties.
17/06 57006 worked the 6V95 Stockton - Cardiff Tidal scrap empties whilst 66841 was on a 6Z60 15:10 Acton - Gloucester empty wagon move (via Swindon and Kemble).
22/06 66021 worked the 6B36 Didcot - Ashchurch MoD service, and 6A32 return.
23/06 57006 was again on the 6V95 Stockton - Cardiff Tidal scrap empties.
25/06 66100 powered the 6B36 Ashchurch MoD trip, whilst later 66841 passed Chepstow at 18:15 with 6V67 Shipley - Cardiff Tidal scrap metal empties.
27/06 67003 was on a 1Z95 08:45 Victoria - Worcester Shrub Hill and 1Z96 17:35 return VSOE excursion out and back via the Stroud Valley line and Kemble.
29/06 As reported in last month's Magazine First/GW have commenced a hire period of SWT's Class 158 units, the Stroud Valley line from Cheltenham/Gloucester - Swindon being one of the chosen routes, 158880 being in use today, before working an evening Cheltenham - Westbury service train. On the subject of DMUs, 175014 was reported as in use on the Gloucester - Worcester shuttles during the day.
30/06 158884 was 'on hire', seeing use over the Stroud Valley line on local passenger duties.
27/06 The up and down mainlines were being replaced in the Magor area with at least five engineers trains being present during part of the day. All the workings eventually returned to Westbury, 66140 being the only loco identified during a short viewing visit. The up and down relief lines were handling all traffic whilst the work was taking place.
30/06 60096 + 66156 were paired on the 6V19 Immingham - Margam 'enterprise' freight during the morning, however the Class 60s South Wales stay was short, being returned on a North-East steel working for an exam!
Portbury branch line
08/06 The FLHH Rugeley Power station coal operation was transferred to Avonmouth from this week reported for up to a 12 week period.
Locos recorded on coal duty during the month have included;- 66030/048/057/058/070/089/090/097/99/118/119/120/162/176/237. 66522/547/601/952
During June, Devon County Council purchased the Bere Alston - Tavistock former LSWR track-bed (from Okehampton) closed to passengers in May 1968. The return of passenger trains is still a possibility, similar locally to the Bristol - Portishead branch line the cost of which has now been estimated at £28 million to reopen following a Network-Rail study.
24/06 66622 was on the Westbury - Stud Farm stone empties (now re-coded from 6U72 - 6M22 from at least the 08/06).
25/06 No loco-hauled trains were used for this year's Pilton (Glastonbury) pop festival 'extras'. First/GW diverted the 11:15, 13:15, and 15:15 Paddington - Cardiff HST services to Castle Cary (via Melksham), each then returning to Paddington. An HST set (with power cars 43097 + 43195) was used on additional 09:48, 12:48, 15:48 and 18:48 Bristol - Castle Cary services (via a reverse at Taunton), all returning ECS to Bristol via Westbury. Also the 19:30 Paddington - Weston-super-Mare service was extended to Castle Cary, again with a reverse at Taunton.
02/06 MPV 98955 + 98905 arrived at platform 1 around 16:00 on weed-killing duty, prior to returning at 16:34 to Westbury.
A Second Local Loco - Hauled ?
It has been suggested another First/GW 'hire' top n'tail Class 67 and stock could be in use from the mid-December timetable change. The reported diagram being as follows;-

The workings in Devon would also help ease extra passenger numbers with the planned withdrawal of SWT's passenger operation West of Exeter from December 2010, due to the re-doubling of the former LSWR route from Salisbury - Exeter (via Yeovil junction) in the Axminster area and the introduction of an hourly service to and from Waterloo over the route.

Well it seems such a long time since I prepared this section - but I am now
in a position to continue this brief review of the freight scene. The year has
not been the greatest I have had, and the loss of my mother at the beginning of
2009 and short time at work have contributed to my not being able to spend time
doing this little effort. So it's on with the business. I won't attempt to cram
in about nine months sightings, but I did spend an interesting day at Milford
Junction in March, logging 45 freight movements from 06.15 to 16.00. Suffice it
to say that most were coal movements (GBRf, DB Schenker and Freightliner), but
the monotony was briefly relieved with an car working, a couple of steel and a
couple of engineers' workings. Also, a hurriedly-arranged Thursday visit to
Newport and Cardiff in early April was also blessed with a number of freight
workings - thirteen in all. Nice to see 60011 in charge of a tank train and
60024 on a return working. Also in April was a "unit bash" in London,
again on a Thursday, hunting down 377, 360 and 458 units in particular. Anyway
coming up to date with some recent sightings. At Leicester on 16th July, 66621
was noted heading south with the following train of Freightliner boxes:
502052/051/038/037/025/026/ 042/041/008/007/049/050/036/035/011/012/040/039. The
same evening, 66599 was noted on the very late-running (3 hours!) Bardon service
with the following consist: 27104/117/106/111/113/122/104/120/101/107/110/ 102/
112/109/118/103/105/108/121. A visit to Nuneaton on 23rd July was a busy
afternoon. Only there from 14.15 to 18.22 but noted 20 freight movements.

Great Western stock "for the year". But I also noticed quite a few
stored vehicles in the sidings at Burngullow (891xx bogie tanks mostly), along
with a lone "Limpet" in Exeter Riverside and many "Octopus"
vehicles in Taunton Fairwater. Nuneaton on 3rd August yielded another busy
evening, highlights being: 66729 into Hams Hall with the following:

following engineers' service with the new "yellow boxes":
035/099/044/118/095/082/084/008; (incidentally, anyone looking for these vehicles may not be aware that five of these are stored - 027, 055, 070 and 104 at Crewe and 087 at Doncaster); then 56312 again with the following(different) rake: 33.87.4909.384/ 382/ 358/ 381/ 383/ 387/ 380/ 392/396/393/390/389/391, 33.68.4909.329. Then at Leicester on 6th August 66106 and 66047 top and tailed on the following train of rail: 33.80.4647.036/016/018/019/031/047 010/007/046/023/024 - something to do with engineering work at Oakham. Some news that there has been a large cull of four-wheel tanks at Llandarcy and Fawley. Just to round off this review I managed to visit Long Marston on the Open Day weekend - on the very wet Saturday! PRESERVATION & INDUSTRIAL MATTERS
02/06 DMU coach W51859 (green-livery) north-bound M5 (Jcn 17), Avonmouth river bridge at 13:05. Later an unidentified DMU trailer was reported as returned to the West Somerset Railway from St. Phillips Marsh, Bristol during the evening - assumed following a wheel-lathe visit.
03/06 50017 west-bound M5, Jcn 17 Gordano (09:40), Jcn 25 Taunton (11:22), Jcn 29 Exeter (13:38) en-route from Tyseley to the Plym-Valley Railway at Marsh Mills. Former RES Guv 94148 was booked to be moved from the WSR - Helston Railway Centre, Tregurno.
04/06 First/GW 153372 departed from Penzance at 12:30 by road having suffered a serious wheel flat. The unit was later noted on the M5, Jcn 24 North Petherton at 20:20.
22/06 'Thomas the Tank' (possibly 47327 ex.East Somerset Railway) westbound M5, Jcn 23 Dunball at 17:55.
18/06 Having arrived on the West Somerset Railway with the 'Severn Coast Express' Railtour on 30/05, Britain's newest mainline steam loco;- 60163 Tornado departed the West Country on a return late afternoon 1Z95 16:05 Minehead - Victoria excursion (which was running around 75 minutes late due to a loco air-pump problem) via Westbury. Royal 67006 had brought the balancing 1Z94 to Bishop's Lydeard earlier in the day.
27/06 Large logo livered 40145 stood in for unavailable Class 37/4s and reached Penzance on Pathfinder Tour's 'Cornish Explorer' 1Z37 05:47 Portsmouth - Penzance (returning as 1Z38 at 17:13). The c/stock in use was;- 17015, 1813, 1671, 3120, 3119, 3149, 5276, 5341. The train was top n' tailed with 37401 and 66188 to and from Westbury, where the Class 40 took over. Also at the Cornish terminus during the day were DRS 37194 + 37087 which had arrived on Spitfire Tour's 'Kernow Growler' (also see Bristol Temple Meads, Barton Hill and Kingsland Road Notes & News).
Sadly after 14 years the Lichfield based railtour operator went into liquidation on 04/06 the company stating 'due to reasons beyond their control'. All future tours have been cancelled, but the popular Torbay Express operation which has become the Torbay Express Limited was passed on to Pathfinder Tour's for ownership regarding existing and future bookings.
