30/05 Highlight of the day was the first appearance in the area of the new 3 million A1 Peppercorn 60163 Tornado (also see cover photo of the June 2009 Magazine) the first new mainline steam loco for 50 years! The day started with 67002 bringing in the ECS as 5Z27 03:41 Eastleigh - Bristol West (with c/stock: 21269, 3121, 3123, 1691, 3147, 3144, 1813, 4998, 5008, 5292), the loco then working the first leg of Pathfinder's 'Severn Coast Express' (1Z27 06:42 Temple Meads - Cardiff Central) via Gloucester where 60163 took over (the loco having arrived here as 5Z26 04:55 loco and support coach ex. Bescot down side). Having been turned, 60163 returned to Bristol as 1Z28 12:41 Cardiff - Gloucester (being noted crossing Bishton fly-over at 13:10!!) and passing Pilning 13:22 (4 early) with 67002 still attached, the diesel then working the train onwards from Bristol departing at 14:13 for Gloucester (60163 being left in Temple Meads with support coach M14007, prior to servicing on Barton Hill depot). 67002 returned on the 1Z29 15:34 Gloucester - Minehead, 60163 again taking over at Temple Meads for the 17:08 departure, being noted passing Yatton at speed (with plenty of black smoke!) at 17:23. 67002 finished the day's workings off as 1Z30 20:40 Minehead - Temple Meads (then 5Z30 23:09 Temple Meads - Bristol East depot to stable the stock overnight), the steam loco then spending a loan period on the West Somerset Railway. Having arrived in Temple Meads platform 6 near enough to time at 13:41, a second steam loco 70013 Oliver Cromwell was present on platform 4 with Steam Dreams 'The Bristolian' (1Z82 08:30 Poole - Temple Meads) waiting to depart with a late 5Z82 13:34 Temple Meads - Bristol West ECS formed with c/stock: M17019 (support), 5040, 4927, W5009, W3110, W3107, W3140, W3107, W3140, 1692, W3122, W3098, W21272. 70013 returned light-engine, following servicing at Barton Hill for the 5Z83 17:00 Bristol West - Temple Meads (platform 5) and the 1Z83 17:34 return to Poole, again with 60163 being present on platform 4! The First/GW Weymouth 'relief' was worked by 67016 + 67017 in the normal 4 coach top n'tail formation.
31/05 67002 returned the previous days 'Severn Coast Express' stock as 5Z28 11:35 Bristol East depot - Eastleigh, being recorded through Bath at 11:41 and Bathampton junction (11:46, 6 early). 66058 was visible on Barton Hill depot during the afternoon, coupled to three empty HTA coal wagons, whilst 66011 passed St. Annes Park at 14:05 (returning at 14:34) with empty and semi-loaded JNA wagons and a 100 tonne Kirow (Colas owned) heavy duty crane.
First/GW are expected to 'hire' in possibly two or three SWT's Class 158 units to assist stock shortages during the summer.

The area has seen many yellow liveried NR trains in the last few weeks, either top 'n' tailed or using a former Anglia DVT. Stock is either stabled at Kingsland Road or Platform2 or nearby at Temple Meads. The motive power has been Cl31s and the following seen 31105/285/465/601/602.

Two loading sites are available at Bennett's and in the old LPG tank sidings. The DBS (EWS) TThO, 6X52 17:27 loaded (empty) car carrier departure now has Mossend or Tyne yard as alternative destinations.

Severn Beach Branch

The Severn Beach line featured in the news section of a national magazine with the report of a Class 150 being seen in the early afternoon. With the Class 143 under going a "Refresh" any unit available is used, both FGW and Arriva liveried 150s, and in the evening both variants of Class 158. The rarity is the 153 with only a couple of examples seen, excess vegetation plus darkness prevents unit numbers being quoted.

PRESERVATION & INDUSTRIAL MATTERS

Bristol Harbour Railway (R.W.Giles) 04/05/09
Peckett Henbury (1937/40) was running shuttles out and back from the S.S Great Britain halt only over the quayside. It is believed one or two trips may have been extended along the Wapping Wharf branchline during the day, as the area around the Industrial Museum is still undergoing refurbishing, now due for completion in the Summer of 2011. The floating harbour area of the City docks was celebrating it's 200th Anniversary over the May-day bank-holiday weekend, having been opened on May-day 1809.

First/GW St. Phillips Marsh depot (R.W.Giles) 31/05/09
A second 'tug' was present, which appeared to be under commissioning as it's couplings had not been fitted. The 4-wheel battery-electric loco was identified as a 'Rail-cat', built by SET (Stored Electric Technology of Litchurch Lane, Derby). A similar designed, European built, Niteq (of 2002) has been used at this location in recent years to move stock over the lathe for wheel-profiling.
