Portishead

North Somerset Council have purchased the last three miles of the former branch line, from the NR boundary at the old Portbury station site, to the end of the line at a cost of 75,000 and are to pay Network-Rail 164,000 made up mainly of contributions from developers on a feasibility study to investigate the operation of passenger trains alongside existing freight traffic over the branch line to the mainline junction at Parson's street. A section was turned into a cyclepath towards the end of last year, when tarpulin sheeting was laid over the track and covered by a stone surface in the Marsh lane area near Pill. This is reported as only a temporary measure, so cyclists do not have to cross a dangerous road bridge and will be returned to rail use when required. The line is approaching its 45th anniversary since closure to timetabled passenger trains in September 1964.

PRESERVATION & INDUSTRIAL MATTERS

Avon Valley Railway, Bitton (17 - 19/02/09)
For the half-term week, the railway for the first time operated timetabled trains during February. This was also another first for the newly arrived Class 107 DMU set SC52006 + SC52025 to appear on service trains, having arrived for a 5 year 'loan' period from the Bolton Abbey & Embasy railway. The set had otherwise only appeared at the November gala during 2008 following its arrival in September. It was reported that the loadings on the very first working on the 17th, were very encouraging and enough to cover the three day's operation! A further 18 diesel operating days are planned for 2009, which could feature the DMU set, Class 73, 73101 Royal Alex, Class 07, D2994 or industrial diesels.
The other 2009 diesel operating days are as follows;- May 2, 23, 30. June 3, 6, 10, 17, 20, 24. July 25. August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. September 5, 12. October 17. The end of season gala is expected to taje place on November 1.
