Avonmouth

06/10 Additional information (December Magazine, page 5). 66172 worked the last of only a handful of 6F85 Westbury - Avonmouth and 6F91 loaded return cement works coal services on this date.
02/11 Land and any remaining sidings alongside Severn Beach station were noted being lifted and cleared. This included the part lifting of the former long-time disconnected and now closed ICI works spur, latterly owned by Grow How. The landmark 328ft high concrete tower, which was used in the production of fertiliser on the site was blown up with a controlled explosion on 16/11. The second disconnected 'platform' line (on the track formation which once ran through to the former Pilning Low-level station) had been lifted by 21/11.
03/11 66092 was in charge of the 6C01 09:41 Newport ADJ - Avonmouth and 6C02 12:07 return trip workings.
04/11 The Filton 'infill' stone service resumed, operating as 6W82 01:01 Crewe Basford Hall yard - Filton West (08:50) and 6W83 05:19 Crewe Basford Hall yard - Filton West (14:00), other booked times for the latter working being Charfield 10:58 - 12:19 and Avonmouth 13:15 -13:29. Today's workings were headed by 60056 passing Hallen Marsh junction down at 06:52 on the 6W82 and later 66139 on the 6W83. 60017 was also reported as working the 6C64 11:15 Westbury - Avonmouth import stone empties and 6C64 return loaded to Westbury.
05/11 60002 was on the 6W85 (05:18 Crewe - Filton West) infill stone being noted in Parkway down loop between 11:30 -12:40 and 66149 on the 6W84 (01:01 Crewe - Filton West). The booked return for the latter being 11:15 Filton West - Crewe (via Temple Meads 11:29 - 12:07). An 'additional' import stone service saw 66150 work a 6Z64 16:59 Avonmouth - Hither Green.
06/11 60041 was on a 6W87 08:35 Crewe - Filton West stone and 66023 headed the return 6C97 08:35 Avonmouth - Newport ADJ local freight trip.
07/11 60002 was allocated a further 6W86 Filton stone from Crewe, the working was however caped.
08/11 A front page Bristol Evening Post report stated that the former station site at Henbury (closed in 1964) had been sold by the BR Property board (residue) for 750,000 to an unknown local developer, possibly for housing. The old platform and former buildings which are close to the regional Cribb's Causeway shopping area were to be included in a future passenger service plan for this freight-only line.
11/11 66086 powered the 6C01 local freight trip from Newport and 59203 was on the 6C63/6C64 Westbury import stone workings.
12/11 Top n'tailed by 67002 + 67022, the 3S23 04:55 Yeovil junction - Barton Hill water cannon passed Stapleton Road at 07:27 (2 minutes early) and was later noted leaving Avonmouth station at 08:05 (1 minute late). The train was later recorded in Weston-super-Mare station between 09:57 -10:03.
15/11 Weekend engineering work each side of Avonmouth station saw a road bus substitution in operation for the day's Sunday service.
Following a public meeting and a local exhibition, the Port of Bristol is going ahead with a planning application to build a new deep-water container terminal on reclaimed land off the existing docks River Severn coast. The site which will include new rail sidings, loading cranes, warehouses, offices and storage space is expected to be rail connected via the old LPG sidings to Holesmouth junction and the main rail network.
At a cost of 500 million, the work could be completed by 2011 and would save shipping particularly from the Far East time travelling to Southampton or the East Coast.
Avonmouth has only been able to berth 'medium' size container ships for off-loading rail movement since the reinstatement of track at West Wharf towards the end of the 1990s.
A combined Avonmouth and Royal Portbury docks surprisingly rank at number 15 in the British ports yearly freight tonnage handled list.

Bristol Parkway, Pilning and Westerleigh

31/10 Additional information (December Magazine page 10, under Bristol Temple Meads, Barton Hill and Kingsland Road) confirmed Colas 47739 running as 0Z47 09:30 Crewe - Tavistock yard stabled overnight at Parkway (having arrived here at 13:19 on 30/10) due to flooding in the Tiverton area, going forward as previously stated, on this date during the morning.
02/11 FLHH 66506 and 66558 were stabled over the week-end in the down sidings prior to working Portbury coal services on 03/11.
03/11 Busy night for a change, with six locos recorded, 66048 loaded Avonmouth - Didcot mgr, 66008 ADJ - Willesden Enterprise service, 66074 MoD liner, 66014 with "Cars" and 66144 empty mgr for Avonmouth. Stabled in the yard was 66506 with MGR empties destined for Portbury.
05/11 An unidentified Class 170 unit was seen heading towards South Wales at 11:30, reason unknown.
06/11 66116 was noted in Pilning loop at 12:55 with the 6B24 Didcot - Wentlooge MoD stores. Two new loco paths appeared in TOPs for the recent delivery of new Class 66 loco imports for Fastline, Freightliner and DRS, these being 0Z52 10:34 Newport Docks - Carlisle Kingmoor (Pilning 11:43 -12:06) and 0Z51 13:30 Newport Docks - Crewe Gresety Bridge DRS (Pilning 14:42).
Down to three this evening, 66153 worked the MoD liner, 66050 a loaded mgr for Didcot and 66129 with empties for Avonmouth.
07/11 31285 appeared at Parkway at 01:45 (37 minutes early ) with a 4Z07 Didcot - Crewe LNWR sidings test working, via Swansea (reverse), Swindon (reverse), Kemble and Stroud.
Observations near Pilning during the early afternoon recorded;- a single First/GW HST power car (with no barrier coach!) 43128 (13:08) assumed running Landore - St. Phillips Marsh (also being recorded passing Filton Abbeywood at 13:10) and EWS 60087 with a special 6Z35 12:40 Merehead - Moreton-on-Lugg train of 'hire' empty FLHH green livered JGAs (with one in plain white!), at 14:27.
Later, at 15:30, Advenza 57005 passed Filton at 15:38 hauling two barrier coaches and DRS 37605 passed Parkway at 16:50 hauling the final Fastline Class 66 for delivery, 66302 as 0Z51 Newport Docks - Crewe (DRS).
08/11 For the Wales v South Africa Rugby Union international at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, First/GW only operated two extra HST services.
10/11 60011 + 60059 were paired on the afternoon Hayes - Moreton-on-Lugg stone empties. As for 6/11, 66121 with the Mod liner, 66157 loaded MGR for Didcot and 66050 empties for Avonmouth.
11/11 Another test working saw Inter-City livered 31454 work 4Z07 17:27 Didcot - Derby RTC via Westbury, Yeovil, Exeter, Bath, Parkway, Swindon and Kemble.
12/11 DRS 20306 + 20310 passed Filton Abbeywood at 14:21 with the 6M67 14:00 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks.
13/11 Advenza 47237 passed Filton Abbeywood at 12:41 and Parkway a minute later heading north light-engine. Green livered 31190 followed later passing Filton Abbeywood at 13:09 and Parkway at 13:18 with a 1Q12 07:10 Exeter (Riverside) - Derby test train (formed 977869 + 9701) having been routed via Yeovil, Salisbury and Bath.
14/11 FLHH 66546 arrived at 14:20 with six binliner flats, two empty (which were stabled in the down sidings) and four loaded which were moved onwards to Barrow Road at 15:16.
15/11 60010 worked an afternoon 6Z35 12:57 Moreton-on-Lugg - Peterborough train of stone, loaded in MEAs, having been seen passing Parkway with the empties down at 06:28. Over at Westerleigh, the inward 6B13 from Robeston, with 60054 had been reported as routed via a run-round at Worcester.
17/11 Four locos seen this evening, 66170 "Vans" from Portbury, 66122 loaded mgr for Didcot, 66056 the MoD liner. 66511 stabled in the yard with MGR empties for Portbury. 31454 was again back in the area on a 4Z08 12:18 Derby - Exeter (Riverside) test train passing around 17:00. A booked Yatton loop stop being between 18:28 - 18:54.
19/11 Colas 47739 was reported to have brought in a 6Z47 engineer's train to Stoke Gifford sidings during the early hours from Northampton. Later, 60041 was on a two hour late running 6A11 Robeston - Theale loaded fuel tank working, the return 6B33 empties not appearing until well into the evening around five hours late!
21/11 More test train activity, saw 31454 head north on a 4Z07 Barton Hill - Derby RTC at 10:00, and later former Central Train's 153325 headed south at 12:15 en-route to Eastleigh works for refurbishing.
22/11 66507 and 66557 were both stabled light-engine in the down sidings at Parkway.
24/11 Seen this evening, were 66122 loaded MGR for Didcot, 66129 with empties for Avonmouth and 66078 MoD liner.
FLHH 66603 worked a 6Z24 12:10 Theale - Aberthaw train of cement PCAs via Westbury and Bath (Pilning 15:15), the loco later reappearing at Parkway assisting a failed 66021 on the late afternoon 6M17 Newport ADJ - Wembley 'enterprise' freight going into the up loop late at 20:25. 66603 was detached and ran back light to Kingsland Road? Whether 66021 was revived or waited for a replacement train loco is not known.
Earlier, 31454 had passed at 17:26 on a 6Z08 test working bound for Barton Hill.
26/11 At Westerleigh during the morning, Colas owned track machine DR76601 was noted undergoing 'tests'. 60002 was also present in the yard on what was assumed to be the 6E41 Lindsey tanks.
27/11 Army 'red' 60040 was on the 6C83 Westbury - Machen stone empties, formed of the FLHH green JGA 'hire' rake of wagons. The Network Rail HST put in appearance this evening using power cars 43014/062. Locos seen were 66551 stabled in the yard with MGR empties for Portbury and 66129 passing through with empties for Avonmouth.
28/11 HST activity, saw the NRMT appear in Parkway loop at 12:07 (with power cars 43014 + 43062) from South Wales (Pilning 11:42) and Arriva XC 43357 + 43385 work south with the 9V59 09:00 Glasgow - Plymouth service.
30/11 FLHH 66531, 66560 and 66957 were noted stabled in Parkway down sidings at 12:50, 66531 being noted taking on fuel from a road tanker lorry. It is reported that a permanent fuel tank facility for Freightliner locos is to be installed here during January or February 2009.

Bristol Temple Meads, Kingsland Road and Barton Hill

30/10 Not previously recorded was the final 6C01/6C02 Newport ADJ - Bristol East depot loaded steel service, worked by 66021 on this date. The 400,000 freight depot on the East depot site was opened for Clugston distribution and rail traffic from 04/04/05, 60083 bringing in the first train of steel loaded on seven BDA flat wagons.
Most of the steel, which originated from the North-East, was used in the construction of the new 500 million Cabot Circus shopping complex which opened during September 2008. Surprisingly along with Class 66 and 60 locos and despite their low numbers, nine Class 37s appeared on what became an almost daily mon-fri working, these being;- 37405/406/410/411/417/422/425/669/670.
01/11 67002 and 67008 top n'tailed the return overnight 3S23 water cannon working to Barton Hill during the morning. A Kingfisher tour's, 'Bristol Explorer' (from Weymouth - Bath/Bristol) was cancelled due to engineering work between Westbury and Bath. The trip was to have been steam hauled by 30777 Sir Lamiel.
02/11 First/GW overnight sleeper train's were diverted via Honiton and Yeovil, 57604 working the 1A40 Penzance - Paddington and 57603 the 1C99 Paddington - Penzance services.
03/11 60094 removed the last rake of HAA/HNA coal empties as 6B63 from Westbury - Margam during the afternoon. These wagons had arrived on the final inward coal service from Avonmouth behind 66172 on 06/10. The 9S53 06:40 Plymouth - Aberdeen Arriva XC service was worked by power cars 43285 + 43303 with intermediate coaches; 41035, 41036, 42052, 42053, 42051, 42343, 44017 (set XC05).
04/11 43285 + 43303 returned west with the 9V59 09:00 Glasgow - Plymouth Arriva XC service.
05/11 20306 + 20310 were paired on the 6V74 02:10 Crewe Coal sidings - Bridgwater and 6M67 14:00 return nuclear flasks, 66086 passed Parsons Street at 17:45 on the 6X52 17:27 Portbury - Washwood Heath/Tyne Yard loaded cars and 66604 later appeared on 6Z66 16:55 Burngullow - Reading (West) loaded sand (via Temple Meads).
Earlier in the day, 67002 + 67008 top n'tailing the Barton Hill water cannon completed the morning 3S23 move by departing Temple Meads at 09:16 for Weston-super-Mare passing Worle at 09:37 inward and returning for Bristol at 09:55.
On the passenger side, Royal 67005 brought in the VSOE running as 1Z82 08:45 Victoria - Temple Meads, passing Keynsham at 13:58 (20 late), the ECS then running 5Z82 13:37 Temple Meads - Bristol East (via a run-round at Bristol West) for the 1Z83 16:37 return. The Class 67 had arrived at Westbury on the rear of the train, steam 35028 Clan Line providing the power to this location, again taking over from here for the evening return to the Capital.
07/11 Friday tour of the parish found SR 34067 at Barton Hill. 67002 and 67008 top n'tailing the 3S23 Yeovil junction - Barton Hill return overnight water cannon working passed Worle junction for Barton Hill at 04:48 (295 minutes early!). Later, 31601 worked west via Bath and Temple Meads on a 4Z08 05:47 Old Oak Common - Laira test train formed 6263, 999602, 9703, this train was also recorded running around 90 minutes early!
08/11 The First/GW 12:30 Paddington - Temple Meads HST service arrived 83 minutes late due to a serious 'hot-box' on coach 42303, which activated the axle counter located at Bourton, near Swindon. Single line running was brought into operation whilst the problem was attended to.
09/11 Colas 47739, not long returned to service, saw frontline passenger duty standing in for a failed 57604 on First/GW's overnight 1A40 21:15 Penzance - Paddington sleeper service departing the Cornish terminus 45 minutes late!
The loco failure was not the train's only problem, the 1A40 being routed via Honiton to Yeovil (due to flooding near Tiverton), then a run-round at Castle Cary to travel via a further run-round at Taunton to Bristol due to a de-railment, involving 59202 + 59204 on the 7A91 22:31 stone departure from Merehead quarry at East Somerset junction.
The sleeper was then routed via Temple Meads and Parkway, but in the end was terminated at Swindon due to the failure of the Colas loco!
57605 collected the sleeper ECS during the following morning as 5Z99 Swindon - Old Oak Common, the train's passengers having been transferred to a normal HST service train sometime earlier.
10/11 Two trains of breakdown vans and cranes made there way to the Class 59 de-railment site at East Somerset junction; 60079 heading 1Z99 from Toton and 66134 a 1Z99 from Margam, the workings being only 15 minutes apart east of Bath. The two de-railed locos had been moved to Merehead by 11:30, initially a single line was in use, with both lines being re-opened by 17:30 with a de-railment area 5 mph restriction in force.
First/GW Bristol - Weymouth line services were severely affected by the incident throughout the day. Another diversion recorded was FLHH 66546 on the 6C66 16:33 Moorswater LaFarge - Westbury cement empties arriving in Temple Meads around 21:00.
11/11 Steam loco 34067 Tangmere (having worked the 50th Pastime Rail 'Torbay Express' as long ago as 28/09) left the Bristol area as 5Z67 09:45 Barton Hill - Toton loco and support coach via Bath. 43303 and 43301 (with set XC02) worked the 9V59 09:00 Glasgow - Plymouth Arriva XC, and a change of water cannon loco on Barton Hill saw 67022 take over from 67008 on the duty.
12/11 A SWT's Class 159 unit working the 08:50 Temple Meads - Waterloo service struck a van on Glass occupation crossing near Bathampton junction after the 72 year-old driver had failed to open both gates before proceeding to cross.
No train crew, passengers or the van driver were injured following the incident, the unit being taken out of service and moved to Salisbury depot for an examination.
13/11 67002 and 67022 top n'tailing the 3S23 return water cannon duty reversed in platform 1 at Weston-super-Mare between 09:50 - 09:57.
14/11 The 3S23 water cannon worked west from Temple Meads and passed Parson's Street at 09:22, later again reversing in platform 1 at Weston-super-Mare between 09:49 - 09:53.
15/11 A Northern Belle dining trip was headed throughout by 67017, the full diagram being 5Z80 05:35 Margam - Temple Meads (07:11), 1Z80 07:37 Temple Meads - Chester (via Bath, Swindon, Oxford, Banbury and Bescot), 5Z80 12:38 Chester - Crewe C.S./5Z81 15:31 Crewe C.S. - Chester ECS, 1Z81 16:51 Chester - Temple Meads (via Birmingham, Oxford, Swindon, Bath), 5Z81 21:42 Temple Meads - Margam.
The ECS ran north as 5Z52 10:51 Margam - Crewe (via Hereford) during the following day.
16/11 A view of Bristol East depot during the early afternoon, found the far end of the facility empty, with some stacked steel girders left in the road gate area. Some empty lorry trailers were also present, the three fork-lift trucks used for off-loading and lorry loading all being locked up in the office and stores compound.
17/11 66152 + 60017 were paired on the morning 6B65 Westbury -Newport ADJ departmental routed via Day's curve and later 66002 was seen in charge of a 6Z60 09:00 Exeter (Riverside) - Bescot train of Polybulk wagons passing through the area running late during the early afternoon.
19/11 20306 + 20310 were paired on the 6M67 14:00 Bridgwater - Crewe nuclear flasks.
Adjustments were made to one the day's two Arriva XC diagrams with; 43321 + 43357 working the unaffected 9S53 06:40 Plymouth - Aberdeen, the 9V59 09:00 Glasgow - Plymouth was worked by 220018 (in place of the booked HST set) whilst 43303 + 43301 were on the 9V63 08:20 Aberdeen - Temple Meads (from Edinburgh) swapping and taking over the 1V65 14:30 York - Plymouth service (18:44) from a Voyager set, onwards from Bristol.
20/11 43303 + 43301 were back on the correct diagram heading the 9S53 06:40 Plymouth - Aberdeen Arriva XC service. DRS 66422 was a surprise visitor to Kingsland Road sidings departing on a 6J83 10:30 track machine move to West Ealing and during the evening 31454 was visible on Barton Hill depot with a test train.
21/11 Freightliner Heavy Haul wagons headed by 66611 passed by at 15:10 southbound.
25/11 43321 + 43357 were on the 9S53 Plymouth - Aberdeen Arriva XC service. Later during the afternoon, 66138 departed Temple Meads up through at 14:05 with the 6V62 (TO) 08:10 Fawley -Plymouth Tavistock yard depot fuel, arriving at Bristol West at 14:11, leaving here, following a run-round at 14:19 for St. Phillips Marsh depot, again via Temple Meads station!
26/11 20307 +20315 passed Ashchurch 142 minutes late with the inward 6V74 Crewe - Bridgwater nuclear flask empties, however the single wagon 6M67 return departed at 12:23 (97 minutes early!).
27/11 67002 and 67022 top n'tailing the 3S21 19:51 Barton Hill - Reading (via Taunton) water cannon departed Bristol 51 minutes early. A Railway Touring Company 'Bath Christmas Market' trip, featuring steam loco 60019 Bittern from Haywards Heasth - Bath/Temple Meads was redated to run on the 06/12.
28/11 Steam 5029 Nunney Castle arrived for railtour duty during the following day as 5Z29 07:48 Tyseley - Barton Hill (14:42) in Bristol 5 minutes early.
29/11 67017 with a Pastime Rail 'York & Durham Xmas Explorer' (1Z57 05:52 Weston-super-Mare-Durham and 1Z58 return) called, the ECS having run as 5Z65 15:12 (Fri) Old Oak Common - Exeter (Riverside) and 5Z66 01:40 Exeter (Riverside) - Weston-super-Mare.
Also a second Pastime Rail trip 'The Ludlow Medievel Christmas Fayre' (1Z67 07:12 Paddington - Shrewsbury) was headed by steam 5029 Nunney Castle onwards from Temple Meads to time at 09:35 having taken over from 67028.
However the steam loco was to fail with an air pump fault, being terminated at Shrewsbury at 16:27 (224 minutes late!).
The 1Z69 return, departed Shrewsbury at 17:25 (82 minutes late) behind 67025 (Nunney Castle was left at Shrewsbury), the train being top n'tailed by 67028 onwards from Bristol (via Parkway, instead of Bath) arriving at Paddington at 22:38 (only 24 minutes late).

With the loss of siding space at Old Oak Commom for Riviera's Train's due to London's Cross-City rail project, Bristol is one of two new locations (the other being Eastleigh) to stable charter coaching stock. Extra space has been made on Barton Hill with the recent departure of the remaining stored Class 37s to Eastleigh, and another long term resident former RES van 94190 which finally left at the end of October destined for Wigan (to provide spare parts) via Newport.
On the subject of long-term residents steam loco 6024 King Edward 1's water tank carrier wagon 98997 (XAA) remains in platform 2 having been at this location for several months now.
Since the release of Arriva Train's Wales 142073 and 142083 from Barton Hill during May after C6 overhauls, the following Class 150/2's have now passed through the depot having received the same treatment;-
150279 (March-April), 150278 (April-May), 150281 (May-June), 150267 (June-July), 150280 (July-August), 150282 (August-September), 150208 (September-October), 150250 (October-November).
The "Leafbuster" has continued to operate throughout the month, heading towards Avonmouth, through Montpelier between 07:00 - 08:00. For the 3rd week of the month it was running in the evening usually 23:15 on the Avonmouth leg, last locos noted were 67002/022.

Portbury Branchline

12/11 Newly delivered from Newport docks to Crewe the previous day, 66955 worked the 4V04 03:45 Crewe Basford Hall - Portbury coal empties, returning with the 6M04 10:30 loaded departure for Radcliffe
P.S. This was thought to have been the loco's very first revenue earning duty.
17/11 Fastline were due to operate route learner 'refresher' light-engine workings to and from Portbury (0Z56 06:30 Chaddeston - Portbury (11:50) via Charfield and 0Z57 13:40 return via Swindon). These were however cancelled.

Following the on-going problems with over crowding and as a 'stop gap' during the wait period for new stock, the company are set to introduce an EWS Class 67 top n'tail four-coach 'hire' operation covering the following week-day workings from Monday 15/12/08;-

Notes;- 'Hire' Cargo-D, blue/grey coaches are to be used between the two Class 67 locos.
Apparently an old favourite, and recently returned to mainline running, preserved Hastings DEMU 1001 was initially under consideration to cover the workings!
It is interesting to remember that 20 years ago, during late 1988 and well into 1989, Class 37/4 loco's and coaches were to remain on both the Marches route, from Cardiff - Crewe and over the Bristol - Taunton line and from Cardiff - Weymouth due to delivery problems with the 35 then brand new Leyland built Class 155 units!!
With Class 57s and stock poised to work some Arriva XC Cardiff - Holyhead services, top n'tail Class 67s and stock over the Bristol - Taunton line for First/GW and top n'tail Class 67s and stock already back in use over the Bristol - Weymouth route on Summer Saturday 'bucket & spade reliefs' during 2008, again for First/GW - how times have changed!!!

Late Night Olympics
The organisers of the 2012 Olympics, due to be held in London are to approach train operators with a view to running late night train's to Bristol and south Wales so spectators visiting the games can enjoy a full day out at the event.
A seven minute 'Javelin' shuttle service will be operating between Stratford and St. Pancras during competition days, where an underground connection is available to Paddington station.

PRESERVATION & INDUSTRIAL MATTERS

02/11 Avon Valley Railway (02/11/08)
DMU set SC52006 + SC52025 saw use during the end of season gala event, their first time in over the line since arriving from the Embasy & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway during September for a loan period.
The railway has applied to operate over 130 days during 2009, an increase of 20 running days compared with 2008.
It is hoped further week-day steam opeartions will be able to take place during the school holiday period over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
The line saw 40,000 visitors during 2007.
