Problems on the West Somerset Railway with an incorrect rail-grinding profile has seen a steam ban over the line for the bigger engines, the train's operator Steam Dreams having turned down the offer of green livered 47840 North Star to haul the train over the line, with Bittern (which was originally planned to be the first loco turned on the newly installed Minehead turntable) to run Bishop's Lydeard-Westbury (with support coach) for turning and to work the train back on the return to Bishop's Lydeard to London. Coincidently, 31233 with a Network-Rail test train complete with driving van 9703 visited the line during the day to gauge the grinding damage.

Two FLHH evening engineers trains recorded were 66621 + 66622 top n'tailing a 6Y33 20.36 Taunton Fairwater-Hullavington (new sleepers and machinery), noted passing Nailsea & Backwell at 21.20 and later 66623 + 66612 each end of 6Y11 21.47 Taunton Fairwater-Wootton Bassett (high output ballast cleaner).

A further HST set with power cars 43022 + 43079 was also believed to have seen use. Last year, Class 31s were used in top n'tail formation with stock on extra workings, which saw around 40,000 people attend the event.
22/07 Test unit 950001 worked back through the area as 2Z08 08.00 Westbury-Plymouth, taking in Yatton down loop. 66196 was on the 6C79 Parc Slip-Westbury cement works loaded coal service.
23/07 The 'Steam on the British Pullman' VSOE was worked by 35028 Clan Line as 1Z92 08.45 Victoria-Bath/Bristol (and 1Z93 16.38 return) to and from Westbury where 66122 took over for the run to and from Bristol. Colas Class 47, No. 47727 worked 0Z47 Newton Abbot - Weston-super-Mare (arriving at 09.46) visiting the up bay platform which has not seen a loco for many years, normally seeing only track machines. The loco remained at Weston for around 4 hours before returning westbound light-engine.
Another departmental movement was MPV DR98961+DR98911 which worked 6Z05 09.30 Marsh junction-Exeter and return, on what could have been a weed killing run.
25/07 Coal train for Westbury seen at 15:00 behind 60039. 66013 ran 0C01 Newport-Bristol East to collect steel empties.
26/07 66506 seen at 09:30 with FHH hoppers believed to be empty MGR en-route to Portbury. The Weymouth relief, 2O72/2V67 were top n'tailed by 67025 and 67001.

The empty stock on after arrival was stabled at Bristol West, during the day prior to running 5Z74 15.29 Bristol West-Temple Meads for the return.
The 'misformed' 150244 (52282 + 57244) + 150243 (in old Wessex vinyls) was unusually employed on the 1F11 10.30 Cardiff Central-Portsmouth Harbour First/GW service inplace of a Class 158/9 unit (150243 had earlier worked the 06.00 Portsmouth Harbour-Cardiff service solo). The return 1F24 14.22 Portsmouth Harbour-Cardiff Central was however in the hands of two car 158957 formed only 52748+57771. Earlier, the 09.49 Weymouth service had departed full with standing passengers formed of 2-car 150127, as the second set which was to be added at Temple Meads was 143617, a class which is not permitted to run beyond Castle Cary on the Weymouth line.
At 12.00 the following were present on Kingsland Road;- 66506/584/625. An evening engineers working through Nailsea & Backwell at 21.19 was 66622 top n'tailing 6Y11 (high ouput ballast cleaner) with 66621.

Later at 09.59, the return HOBC was noted, again top n'tailed with 66621 + 66622 running early as 12.00 Westerleigh-Taunton Fairwater yard (6Y11). Two car 158957 was also seen on the 10.10 Temple Meads-Taunton First/GW local service and mixed livery 'hybrid' 150244 was on the 09.35 Temple Meads-Weymouth service. A second engineers working; 6Y33 13.40 Westerleigh-Taunton Fairwaters
was later seen near Weston-super-Mare at 14.47 top n'tailed by Freightliner locos with blue livered 66623, on the rear, only identified.
28/07 31233 worked a 4Z08 09.00 Derby-Barton Hill test train arriving during the early afternoon, later working 18.00 Barton Hill-Exeter. A DBSO driving van was included in the train's formation.
29/07 The Tuesday's only, 6V62 10.46 Eastleigh-Tavistock yard loaded TTA fuel tanks arrived in Bristol, with 12 destined for St. Phillips Marsh, 6 for Penzance, 1 for St. Blazey, and 10 for Laira. The departure from Bristol was late around 17.00.
Earlier, DRS 37059 powered a 6Z37 Taunton-Wymondam stone-blower move (DR80200) passing Worle (Weston-super-Mare) at 09.49. Also see the front cover photograph on last Month's Magazine.
A Northern Belle special (1Z33 06.39 Preston-Bath and 1Z34 16.55 return) was top n'tailed by Royal 67006 + 67028 via the Marches and the Severn Tunnel. On arrival at Bath, the train departed ECS as 5Z33 13.01 Bath-Bristol East via Westbury, before working 5Z34 16.38 Bristol East-Bath for the return routed via Swindon (reverse), Kemble and Stroud to the North.
30/07 66054 noted heading southbound with a rake of "Railtrack" wagons. 31233 returned North as 4Z08 17.37 Exeter-Barton Hill, being booked to take in Yatton up passing loop en-route.
31/07 The 6M67 Bridgwater-Crewe nuclear flasks were hauled by 20301+ 20305. 31233 was again recorded in Temple Meads at 22.49, with the 4Z08 test train (including DBSO) working Barton Hill-Derby (via Swansea).

Gloucester

08/07 Advenza 47237 worked a late running 6Z70 18.30 Stockton-Cardiff Tidal siding scrap metal service which was terminated at Gloucester. Earlier 'Mainline' blue-livered 60044 worked a late running 6M96 05.46 Margam-Corby steel coil train during the morning.
09/07 47237 continued the previous day's 6Z20 forward, passing Lydney at 10.59 (365 minutes late!).
12/07 Two Class 60 workings reported during the morning; 60044, again on the 6M96 Margam-Corby steel coils (Gloucester 09.01) and 60091 with the 6V05 Round Oak-Margam loaded steel at 11.27.
17/07 A 4Z32 13.20 Ripple Lane-Cardiff Tidal steel service formed of 10 KIAs headed by 57006 was diverted to Gloucester New yard via Kemble and Stroud, having departed around 50 minutes early.

Portbury Branch Line

21/07 Test unit 950001 visited the branch, being noted passing Pill at 14.20 and on the return at 14.51. on a 2Z08 working. The unit crossed, 66115 at Ashton at 15.10 on the return, the Class 66 was running light-engine from Barton Hill-Portbury to collect the 6X52 Washwood Heath cars. The cars loco now appears to return light to Barton Hill as opposed to remaining stabled at Portbury.
The rarely reported 6M07 03.00 Portbury-Rugeley P.S. was worked by DRS 'hire' 66425 (09/07), 66581 (10/07), 66953 (11/07) and 66551 (23/07). The service was reported as a failure near Little Mill signal box (between Newport and Abergavenny) on 22/07, behind 66527. 66507 arrived light-engine to assist departing 62 minutes late.
Also on 31/07, 66511 was another failure on this train near Cwmbran, with assistance from a EWS loco into Panteg loop! Fastline driver route-learning trips were due to start at the end of August over the branch line, with a coal service to Radcliffe P.S. expected to follow. The loaded trains will run via Parkway, Swindon and Oxford with the return empties back via Bromsgrove, Cheltenham and Charfield.
