03/11 66046 was noted undergoing light maintenance in the former cripple
siding. The new 'apron' here is believed not in full use as nothing has been
seen here during the month on subsequent visits.

Bristol Parkway
01/11 Two South Wales emu scrap trains were booked to operate;- 66709 on 6Z91
10.40 Shoeburyness-Sims Newport docks with sets 3413+3432+3433 (all in SWT
livery) and 66189 with 5Z23 Stewarts Lane-Caerwent with 1905+1908 (the latter in
Southern Railways 'Govia green') passing Pilning at 13.33. The Newport docks
working was however caped.
04/11 Two freights seen this evening, starting with 66045 working empty MGR to
Avonmouth and 66056 with loaded "MEA"s from Portbury.
06/11 Steel train diversions were in running as the Chepstow and Charfield
mainlines were closed for engineering works. Recorded were;- 60094 on 6V35
Lackenby-Llanwern empties and 66163+37422 with 6V19 02.28 Bescot-Margam empties.
The latter was running late as the Class 37 had failed at Hullavington and the
Class 66 loco had run light from Avonmouth to assist.
08/11 The action this evening comprised 66169 with the Tyne Yard
"Boxes", another MEA consist from Portbury behind 66069 and 66133 with
mgr from Avonmouth to Didcot.
09/11 57006 was noted on the 4O51 10.08 Wentloog-Southampton liner, this service
now running as a M,T,SO 'Q' train. Subsequent sightings of this service has
noted good loadings!
11/11 66219 was recorded on the 6A10 (ThO) Cardiff Tidal-Colnbrook steel
service, now back to it's normal late morning time slot and 66712 hauling scrap
units 3432+3413+3433 as the 01/11 caped, Shoeburyness-Newport train it abandoned
its consist in one of the down roads and returned to the London area. There were
a number of train cancellations due to the previous day's signalling failure at
Didcot which left rolling stock out of position for the day's services (also see
Bristol Temple Meads Notes & News). It doesn't rain but it pours, an action
packed evening to report. First up was 66049 with loaded mgr from Avonmouth to
Didcot, followed by 66030 hauling a track machine heading east. The "Binliner"
also ran early with 66553, then came 66048 with loaded MEAs from Portbury
heading north. Two empty MGRs were then seen heading to Avonmouth hauled by
66023 and 66225 respectively, the last sighting being the MoD Liner behind 66237
12/11 The Newport EMU stock, 3432+3413+3433 was noted stabled in the down
sidings having ran 'hot' at Coalpit Heath, being still there two later. The
Freightliner Moreton-on-Lugg stone service empties were noted behind 66612.
15/11 The VEPs were still present in the yard this evening and noted workings
were 66225 again with MGR empties for Avonmouth and 66004 with the MoD Liner.
17/11 The 6Z91 operated behind 66710 hauling 1307 (SWTs livery)+312703+1885 (SWTs
livery) running near enough to the booked time. One of the new former MML 'Rio'
Hst sets was noted on the 11.00 Paddington-Swansea First/GW service formed;-
43071, 44079, 41179, 42170, 42162, 42166, 40801, 41149, 41181, 43091 all in new
colours.
18/11 A 5Z40 09.15 Ramsgate-Caerwent scrap unit train with sets 3421+3493+3543
passed at 14.41 behind 67026. Later 66710 departed at 17.00 with units
3432+3413+3433 from the down yard which had been here since 11/11 having
suffered a hot box. By this date the former SR 'slam door' stock left in service
dropped below 200 to 198 of the main CIG, VEP and CEP 'bigger' design units. The
only other evening working seen was an empty MGR for Avonmouth behind 66034
19/11 37 411 worked the overnight 6V30 22.37 Dagenham-Bridgend Ford car parts. A
test trip for Class 52, D1015 Western Champion, a possibility for sometime
during the week was cancelled, the loco still not being ready for service
following transmission repairs.
22/11 66607 was noted 'shut-down' in Stoke Gifford down yard on empty
Freightliner box wagons, believed to be a recessed Moreton-on-Lugg stone
working. Just three freight workings this evening starting with 66034 working
the MoD Liner, 66020 Tyne Yard "Boxes" and 66179 with mgr empties for
Avonmouth.
23/11 60002 worked the Theale-Robeston fuel empties and 66703 was seen passing
pilning at 16.22 hauling 6Z91 10.40 Shoeburyness-Newport formed
312701+312719+312715. It is reported that there are a further 25 Class 312 emu
sets stored at Shoeburyness for disposal.
24/11 66703 worked 6Z91 Shoeburyness-Caerwent reported formed of 12 former
Virgin MkII coaches.
25/11 London Paddington services were in chaos this evening following a black
out in the Didcot area, with services running between Reading & London and
Bristol/Cardiff -Swindon. One interesting diversion via the Berks & Hants
arrived at 20.10, this was the 17.12 Paddington - Hereford. Seen in between time
was the NR HST using power cars 43013/062, and 66078 with the MoD liner, and
following power restoration a wealth of HSTs bound for South Wales and 66246
with empty mgr for Avonmouth BHT.
28/11 50 049+50 031 passed Cattybrook at 13.54, near enough to time, on 5Z50
13.05 Cardiff Canton-Old Oak Common railtour (from the previous day) ecs.
29/11 Just one freight this evening, 66065 with empty MGR for Avonmouth.
Bristol Temple Meads and Barton Hill
01/11 20309+20311 were paired on the 6M67 11.56 Bridgwater-Crewe nuclear
flasks and 31128+31454 were present on Barton Hill depot for fuel ready for a
further week of Weymouth workings.
03/11 New units to the area, former Central Trains 158859 and 158861 arrived to
strengthen Wessex Trains services and possibly eliminate loco-haulage?. HST
stock moves during the day saw;- 47197 on a 5Z50 12.05 Eastleigh-Laira working
formed with two barrier coaches and 41181+41182+41183 with a buffet coach
in-between and green-liveried 47 815 (on loan to Freighliner!) for a First/GW
move of power cars 43071+43093+43063+43079 as 5Z43 14.00 Landore-St.Phillips
Marsh (noted passing Pilning at 15.40). Freight movements during the day saw;-
66151 on the Burngullow-Irvine china clay slurries, 60 050 on a one wagon
afternoon Newport ADj-Westbury departmental and 66 525 on the Avon area refuse
containers.
04/11 20314+20315 were on the Bridgwater-Crewe flasks and 31128+31454 were noted
on the 2V79 11.00 Weymoth-Bristol Wessex Trains service.
05/11 The 2O86 08.28 Bristol TM-Weymouth was in trouble at Maiden Newton with 31
454 suffering low oil pressure. 31128 took the train onwards and then returned
the stock as ECS instead of the 11.00 Weymouth-Bristol TM, which was cancelled.
The afternoon part of the diagram, 2O90 14.28 Bristol-Weymouth and 2V89 17.18
return, were covered by a unit. Also the day's 1O98 12.52 (FO)Bristol
TM-Brighton and 1V96 16.56 return were covered by a Wessex Trains unit.
06/11 The day's Weymouth diagram was covered by a unit, but 31454 and 31128 top
n'tailed Cardiff Millenium stadium 'Ruggex' specials during the day. 31601 was
reported failed out of traffic. A 1Z47 08.04 Lichfield-Bath excursion (via
Chippenham) was headed by West Coast 47 854 which then ran 5Z47 12.05 Bath-St.
Phillips Marsh ecs. The empty stock returned as 5Z48 17.20 St.Phillips
Marsh-Bath, for the 1Z48 to Lichfield.
07/11 Following the crash at Ufton Nervet level crossing, near Reading involving
the 1C92 17.33 Paddington-Plymouth First/GW Hst service, which sadly saw the
loss of seven lives the line remained closed for seven days. Stone services were
diverted to run via Melksham. In the Bristol area, this was the first of five
weekends which saw the closure of the Westerleigh junction-Gloucester mainline
and diversions, including Virgin XC services ran via Newport (reverse), Lydney
to/from Gloucester. Part of the work was known to be taking place in the
Charfield area.
08/11 Green 47 815 was back in the area in action on the 1C99 23.50
Paddington-Penzance First/GW sleeper service, returning the balencing 1A99 the
following day, inplace of a Class 57.
10/11 67022 worked 1V80 09.44 Victoria-Bath/Bristol VSOE and 1O92 15.44 return,
the ecs laying over at Bristol West. 31 452 and 31 601 were noted stabled in
platform 2 on the Wessex Train's 'pink' set.
11/11 37896+37675 top n'tailed a 6Z37 08.55 Barton Hill-Falmouth water cannon
run, special permission being given for the 'heavyweight' 896 to work over the
Cornish branchline. The train on arrival at Truro, took over the 14.20 Falmouth
docks local passenger service path, which was cancelled. Also steam 6024 King
Edward I was seen in Bath goods loop between 15.00 and 15.15, to allow an Hst
service to overtake, the loco being on railtour duty two days later. On the GW
mainline at Denchworth, the down main was reported closed for bridge repairs
until at least March 2005.
12/11 A Class 158 unit worked the 1O98 and 1V96 Brighton services inplace of the
Class 31s.
13/11 Cotswold Rail 47316+47200 brought in Pastime Rails 'Devonian' (1Z24 09.00
Ealing Broadway-Plymouth), via Parkway (Stapledon Road 08.53), for steam 6024
King Edward I to take over in place of the booked 71000 Duke of Gloucester which
had suffered an accident on the East Lancs Railway a few days previous. The 47s
headed the evening working to London via Bath and Chippenham back from Bristol.
Also noted at Temple Meads during the morning was 47 197+66 525 stabled at the
east end of platform 11 and 66 217 on a rake of empty HTAs for Portbury later
returning on a loaded Aberthaw working.
14/11 66219 noted with a southbound stone train at 13.55
15/11 20306+20314 were on the Bridgwater-Crewe flasks and 31452 with 31601 top
n'tailed 2W61 18.30 Bristol TM-Weston-super-Mare and 2W46 19.09 return with
coaches 6122, 6117, 9506, 6173. This was the first visit of the Wessex Class 31s
to Weston on passenger duty, this being the town's carnival night. Earlier 60073
made an unusual appearance on the 6V62 (MO) Westbury-St.Phillips Marsh fuel
tanks.
18/11 37896 and 37675 top n'tailed the water cannon from Barton Hill-Truro, but
ran via Chippenham as there was a problem reported with rail adhesion at
Bathampton junction. The train was noted returning westbound near
Weston-super-Mare around 12.00. Later the train was recorded back in Temple
Meads at 22.22 assumed returning back to Barton Hill. 37606+37608 were the
Bridgwater flask locos.
19/11 31 601 with 31 452 top n'tailed the 1O98 12.52 (FO) 12.52 Bristol
TM-Brighton Wessex Trains and 1V96 return service. Southbound coal train seen at
14.15 headed by 66137.
22/11 A 5Z31 10.00 Temple Meads-Okehampton stock move was ' wrongly' operated
and was returned to Westbury! and the 6V62 St.Phillips Marsh fuel tanks were
again Class 60 hauled with Load-haul 60 008 arriving late around 15.30. 37
606+37 608 again worked the Bridgwater flasks, the return passing Day's jcn at
14.48. A view of Barton Hill depot at 14.00 found;- 37174/675/896 and 150282,
with the regular stored locos; 37077/379/696. Track machines DR80203+73924 were
noted heading towards Bath at 14.00.
23/11 37896+37675 passed through Bath around 09.30 for Barton Hill on a return
water cannon run from Reading. Later 31 106 called at St.Phillips Marsh depot
for fuel on the 13.15 Westbury-Crewe stock move which had wrongly gone to
Okehampton the previous day. The train was noted passing Pilning at 15.03,
formed with coaches 5906 and 5958. 66049 noted with a northbound stone train at
16.05.
24/11 66023 passed Malago at 14.33 on the 6S55 Burngullow-Irvine china clay
slurry tanks and 66 553 was later noted on the area refuse containers at Bath
Oldfield Park at 16.15.
25/11 37896+37675 worked 6Z37 08.45 Barton Hill-Truro and 6Z38 13.26 return
water cannon, the outward passing Uphill junction at 09.17. The train was booked
to do the same working for the following two Thursdays. Later, 31105 and 31190
top n'tailed a 23.45 St.Phillips Marsh-Tyseley Ultrasonic test-train.
26/11 31452+31601 again worked the 1O98 and return 1V96 Friday's only Brighton
diagram departing Keynsham at 13.00. Seen at Kingsland Road at 09.45 were
66513/514/520/604. (6 were present on Saturday with the addition of 66553 and
666??, but by 18.00 on Sunday just 66553 remained).
27/11 Two steam visitors during the day were 3440 City of Truro which worked a
1Z40 10.15 Vintage Trains five-coach special to Plymouth and 73096 on an 08.55
Victoria-Bath/Bristol and return Steam Dreams outing inplace of 71000 Duke of
Gloucester. City of Truro had arrived with support coach the previous evening
and worked a 10.40 Plymouth-Truro Stragetic Rail Authority special to open the
newly re-doubled Burngullow-Probus Cornish mainline, three days later. Green
liviered 37 261 was involved with balancing workings, and headed the day's
return 1Z37 16.48 Plymouth-Bristol working. An unusual sight in Kingsland Road
was no less than seven stabled Freightliner Class 66s, six reported present for
engineering work in the Reading area the following day. The locos were;- 66
513/514/520/525/602/603 and 66 553 the current area refuse train loco.
28/11 A number of locations were viewed during the afternoon, with the following
to report;- Barton Hill depot; 37 077/379/696/675/896. 66 049/179/246. Coaching
stock; W35461. St.Phillips Marsh; 08 663/822. Hst power cars; 43124/162/195.

29/11 GWR green 60 081 powered the afternoon Parc Slip-Westbury loaded coa via
Day's curve during the early afternoon and 60 042 was on 6V09 13.09 Washwood
Heath-Portbury coal empties.
A serious power failure around 17.40 between Swindon and Didcot lasted for
around 3 hours due to damaged cabling. Buses were used from Didcot and some
trains diverted, but the B & H route remained closed due to the level
crossing crash four days earlier.
Gloucestershire
04/11 66025 passed through Gloucester just before 11.00 (60 late) on the 6M70
Newport ADj-Cliffe Vale freight.
05/11 37408+37411 headed 5Z61 16.20 Bescot-Cardiff ecs for use on the following
day's Ruggex specials. 20315+20314 were ready to depart from Berkeley at 13.15
for Crewe with loaded nuclear flasks.
06/11 For the Wales v South Africa Rugby International, 37418+37411 were booked
to top n'tailed shuttles between Cardiff Central and Gloucester leaving the
former at 08.10 and 10.50 and returning from the latter at 09.34 and 12.05.
However, 37 411 failed one minute into the starting journey and was replaceed by
67 026 for the remainder of the diagram. The coaching stock was of interest in
being the Arriva liviered Settle & Carlisle set; 9524, 6170, 6124, 6066,
6035, 9521.
09/11 37411 and 37418 top n'tailed a 1Z14 Worcester-Cardiff Serco test train
formed with coaches; 72632, 72708, 72616, 977869, 999508. The train also covered
all the running lines between Newport and Severn Tunnel junction during the day.
11/11 A 6Z50 Newport ADj-Caerwent departmental brought ballast into the
reception sidings for use. The hauling loco, believed to be a Class 66 was
however not recorded.
16/11 The 6V70 CliffeVale-Newport ADj freight was noted passing Gloucester at
16.00 behind 66 187.
19/11 37405 and 37 408 ran 0Z61 17.00 Bescot-Cardff light-engine to top n'tail
the following days rugby extras between Cardiff and Gloucester during the day.
Blue liviered 60 078 was later seen at Gloucester at 22.40 on 10 HQA wagons.
27/11 50031+50049 powered Pathfinder Tour's 'Yorkshire Royale' (1Z26 06.15
Cardiff-York) excursion as far as Derby (for steam Duchess of Sutherland to take
over), running via Chepstow and calling at Lydney en-route.
Portbury Branchline
13/11 66 217 arrived on a Saturday morning train of empty HTAs returning
around 13.00 to Aberthaw.
22/11 66 029 was seen at Ashton junction with the assumed MO loaded coal HAAs to
Ketton cement works.
24/11 66 155 was recorded at Ashton Gate at 13.00 on loaded MEAs for Rugby
cement works and later 66 152 passed with inward empty HAAs for an Aberthaw
working.
29/11 66 124 passed Ham Green at 14.56 on loaded HAAs for Ketton (MO).

26/11 To take people to a Wales v Japan rugby match at the Millennium Stadium,

Haymarket-Canton via Shrewsbury, being transferred from ScotRail to Arriva
Trains Wales.
27/11 50031/049 worked 1Z26 06:07 to York as far as Derby for LMS steam loco
6223 forward. The diesels returned as 1Z27 18:11 from Derby.
29/11 150262 was noted at Canton. 150256/284 have also been transferred from
ScotRail to ATW, but are on temporary loan to Arriva Trains Northern until the
new Northern rail franchise starts.

with eth sub class members 410/419/422 also to be stored or withdrawn.
