NOTES AND NEWS

WEST COUNTRY AREA

Avonmouth

02/08 37 419 was unusually rostered for the 4E41 (MO) Avonmouth-Tyne yard containers and arrived light-engine from Newport passing Brentry at 17.55. The train, which was to be routed via Filton Abbey Wood, Dr.Day's curve and Bath due to the Chipping Sodbury tunnel drainage work, was however deemed to heavy for the loco, which departed at 19.29 as 0F84 light-engine back to Newport! The loco was to be assigned a 'B' exam at Margam after thoughts that it might have been withdrawn following the return to service of 37422 at Toton (for use in South Wales).

25/08 Resurfacing work was noted being carried out on the A403 Smoke Lane level crossing (near Hallen Marsh), this following the installation of new security gates and fencing at this location. It is still not known what new traffic, if any, is expected from the former Pasminco/Britannia Zinc works sidings. Problems with the loading bunker during the month saw an additional East Usk-Hallen Marsh (Bennett's siding) train of HAA coal empties, to form an evening departure to Aberthaw. Today's loco on this train was 60001 arriving around 17.30.

Locos recorded on coal duty during the month included;- 66020/065/197/224/243. 09003 remained as area pilot.

Bristol Parkway

01/08 Weekend closures of the Chepstow mainline for engineering works saw further diversions during the month. During the morning 60073 was looped from 10.30 to just after 11.00 with 16 empty FCA coke wagons on 6E09 09.40 Margam-Lackenby, the train seemed to be in the loop for a longtime as nothing passed initially! A Class 158 was however recorded in the up platform for 20 minutes around this time, but then departed back towards Bristol Temple Meads. Also recorded were;- 60005 on a down empty CWR train at 10.25, 60025 on 6E48 10.20 Llanwern-Lackenby steel empties and 60096 on 6E49 11.10 Llanwern-Lackenby steel empties. During the evening, 'coal-sector' liveried 60060 passed with 6Z38 10.28 Tees-Margam loaded coke and load-haul 60008 was on 6V42 Lackenby-Margam steel empties.
07/08 Further week-end diversions included;- 60100 with northbound steel slab empties and 60072 on westbound loaded train (believed to be 6V35 01.10 Lackenby-Llanwern). 60073 was later seen on 6V40 05.08 Lackenby-Margam steel empties and 60091 was recorded on 6V97 loaded Beeston-Cardiff Tidal sidings scrap. Also during the day the Robeston-Westerleigh fuel tanks were noted diverted via the Severn Tunnel top n'tailed with 60066 and 66224.

A number of engineers trains were also recorded;- 60063 on 6W07 09.15 Gloucester-Newport ADJ and 37417 on 6W10(6W15) 08.10 Abbotswood junction-Newport ADJ (via Worcester) empty CWR train.

26/08 Minor improvement compared to 23/08, this evening saw 66230 working the Tytherington Stone and 66217 with an empty MGR rake bound for Avonmouth.

29/08 Due to week-end engineering work east of Reading one of the Summer Saturday's Virgin XC loco hauled trains (with 67003 and 67006) was stabled through to 31/08 in the former railnet depot. The train eventually ran 5Z15 10.12 Parkway-Old Oak Common (via Hullavington).

04/08 The 08.28 Bristol TM-Weymouth and return 11.00 Weymouth-Bristol TM was worked by a 150 and 158 unit combination, so a naming ceremony for 31 454 could take place at Temple Meads. The name 'Heart of Wessex' nameplate was unveiled by Bernard Lane, a founder member of the Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership, who is retiring this year in the presence of representatives from Wessex Trains and Fragonset Railways.. Steam action today saw, 5029 Nunney Castle and 5051 Earl Bathurst double-head Pastime Rail's 'Devonian' (05.53 Reading-Plymouth and 16.40 return) onwards from Bristol at 08.15. An announcement from EWS could see the end of double-headed steam workings in the future due to costly double crewing arrangements for such workings.
22/08 Load-haul 60008 was on the Parc Slip-Westbury coal and return empties.
24/08 There was severe disruption in Bristol Temple meads this morning when a body was found around 06.30 in the 4ft under the gantry by Barton Hill. An announcement by Network Rail during the month will now no longer see a steel terminal built at East depot due to planning problems. The Castle took over at Newport for the run via the Vale of Glamorgan and Neath before a very noisy assent of the 1 in 52 Cockett bank, after a almost standing start from the back of Landore Depot. The return from Carmarthen, 1Z96, was routed via the Swansea district line, and after taking water at Port Talbot and a slow run to Margam depot meant that 5029 had to put in a tremendous effort up Stormy Down Bank, which it did in style. At Newport the Castle was detached and left for Barton Hill and 67001, which had spent the day on Godfrey Road, took over for the return to Basingstoke.
