Avonmouth

04/03 Sunday workings still continue from the Bulk Handling Terminal, with 60052 working the Acton loaded coal MEAs.

05/03 66125 was shunting fertiliser VKA vans prior to departing at 16:15 with the Warrington enterprise service from Hallen Marsh.

07/03 66514 having been stabled on Barton Hill during the day worked a late afternoon train of empty cartics to Dagenham.

14/03 56062 arrived during the morning with loaded fertiliser vans from Middlesborough, the loco turning light to Newport. Freightliner 47205 arrived late in the afternoon light to collect empty cartics from the Chittening Estate for Dagenham.

21/03 56085 headed the 6M75 Warrington freight

26/03 60024 powered the Acton coal MEAs and 66041 was present at Hallen Marsh during the early afternoon with a single road/rail bulk tank on a container flat a single]e empty OCA wagon. The working was not identified. 66239 was present in Bennett's sidings with loaded coal HBA/HAA hoppers. South Burton is a new location now served from this location.

23/03 Britannia Zinc No. 7 (S 10023/60) was briefly seen at Kingsweston Lane L.C. returning to the works light whilst 66002 was present in Bennett's sidings with a loaded coal train.

In conjunction with Didcot-Avonmouth empty MGR services running via Clifton Down (see March Magazine) driver route learning trips have been recorded either running to/from Avonmouth station (crossing Wales & West services at Clifton Down) or completing a full circuit outward via Henbury. Light engines noted on these duties include 58041 (07/03, 12/03, 13/03), 66171 (15/03) and 37674 (19/03).

The location is now seeing between 50 and 60 coal departures a week, the first week of March however saw reduced workings due to conveyor belt problems.

02/03 66517 was noted at Barrow Road.

Bristol Parkway

28/02 20310/315 worked the Bridgwater-Crewe nuclear flasks.

01/03 Not a lot of activity to report this evening, 47812 noted with the 19.35 Leeds service and 66230 with the Llandarcy - Grain bitumen tanks.

02/03 47773 hauled an 07.40 Cardiff-Inverness 'Lord of the Isles' Regency Rail/Pathfinders excursion, returning two days later. 47798 passed Bristol Parkway east at 13:25 with royal train stock. 66517 was noted at Barrow Road.

05/03 47851 noted with a late running northbound service at 19.15. Freight activity recorded 66107 with empty fuel tanks to Fawley, 66070 working the Avonmouth - Tyne Yard "Boxes" and 47292 Felixstowe liner. MGR operations comprised 60084 with empties to Avonmouth and 60018 a loaded train for Didcot.

06/03 47701 worked the 1V48 11.17 Manchester Piccadilly-Temple Meads and return 1S93 15.35 to Glasgow Central. 66143 headed the Tytherington-Battersea stone (19.00).

07/03 60045 worked the East Depot-Hayes loaded stone train, still currently running WO.

08/03 20310/315 powered the Bridgwater-Crewe flasks (15.56). Some evening services were delayed when the Severn Tunnel was closed for 30 minutes after the driver of a Swansea-Paddington HST reported hearing a mystery noise. An inspection at 17.00 found nothing out of the ordinary. Freight this evening comprised 66156 VGAs for Teeside and 47207 on the Felixstowe liner. MGRs noted, 60018 and 66036 empties to Avonmouth and 60068 Didcot bound.

09/03 A brief visit at 20.45 saw 47292 working the Felixstowe Liner.

10/03 60045 worked the Saturday morning Tytherington-Westbury stone service. The KPA Tip-hook wagons on this train have been recently replaced by EWS MBA 'Megaboxes'. The 09.55 Crewe-Plymouth service was seen being hauled by another Fragonset locomotive, 47712.

12/03 66082 was stabled in the yard for the duration of this visit. Class 47 noted were 47848 with a late running northbound service, 47744 headed south with the Tunnel gauging train and 47367 with the Felixstowe liner. Freights noted were 60066 working Tyne Yard "Boxes", 66107 Stone train comprising MBAs, 66167 Fawley tanks and 66123 with an Engineers train which parked up behind 66082. Only one MGR recorded a loaded train double headed by 66006 + 60093. The new 180101 made a number of visits to Parkway during the month using the up or down loop as a terminating/starting point for test runs from Swindon. Other dates recorded have been 14/03, 19/03, 21-23/03 inclusive. The Class are to be known as 'Adelante', a Spanish word suggesting speed, modernity and reliability as well as a greeting to welcome people.

13/03 Morning observations at Pilning recorded the following;-Heritage one-car unit 960011 (977859/55025) with a 2Z02 Cardiff-Salisbury-Westbury track filming trip (at 09.14). 47737 with 1Z72 06.43 Swansea-Stratford EWS charter formed of BN94 (blue/grey) MkI stock (09.59), this train was running over an hour late due to the ECS ex. Bound. Green on the outward working being wrongly sent to Oxford at Didcot! 66169 up empty steel empties passed at 10.18. 66131 Westbury-Newport with two wagons (KPA Tiphook and OAA Mendip Pool wagons) at 10.18. Brand new GB Railfreight locomotives 66 705/706/703/7041101 running light as 10.19 Newport-Willesden ran through at 10.55. A quick visit lasting 20 minutes saw 66185 Tytherington - Battersea stone service comprising MBAs, 66132 in the yard and 56062 work the Teeside VGAs.

14/03 The remaining two GBRf locomotives 66 702/707 passed Pilning en route to Willesden at 10.18. Later the Bridgwater-Crewe flasks were seen at Parkway heading north behind 20310/315 at 16.14.

15/03 Misery for London bound passengers this evening when the 18.00 from Parkway failed in the Severn Tunnel Junction area and delayed both the 19.00 and 20.00 Paddington services. The errant train was towed to Temple Meads and its passengers transferred, a coach was provided from Parkway to Swindon. The 19.00 and 20.00 arrived within 5 minutes of one another well past 20.30. More problems ensued at 20.50 when the late running 20.28 Swansea arrived and remained in situ until 21.25 whilst a brake fault was rectified. In the meantime a 3 car unit Cl158/153 used platform 1 prior to departing for Temple Meads, possibly a diverted Cardiff - Portsmouth as did the slightly delayed 20.51 Plymouth service. Other activity recorded, 3 eastbound MGRs 66034 and 60044 from Avonmouth and 66207 from South Wales, 47737 and charter stock, thought to be Stratford on Avon - Cardiff, 56073 Teeside VGAs and 57012 Felixstowe liner. 08653 arrived with a trip from Avonmouth of intermodal flats.

17/03 66009 worked a Didcot PS-Avonmouth empty MGR.

19/03 58025 handled the inward Tytherington stone empties and loaded for Battersea (15.15/19.42). 47205 was in charge of a car train bound for Avonmouth, the latter remained here for about two hours whilst a host of services departed from Avonmouth. These comprised, 56033 Teeside VGAs, 66131 MGR and 66045 Tyne yard "Boxes". Also seen was 60067 Margam-Fawley empty fuel tanks, 47258 Felixstowe liner and 66024 arrive with empty MGR.

21/03 In place of the normal Class 60 or 66, 58042 worked the East Depot-Hayes loaded stone (12.20).

24/03 66222 called with Pathfinder Tours 'Dorset Mariner 2', (1Z92 06.05 Crewe-Poole) using Riviera coaches the train visited the Hamworthy and Furzebrook branches (this being a re-run of last April attempt which was affected by loco failures). 66194 worked the return (1Z93 13.57 Poole-Crewe).

26/03 66055 and 60069 noted light engines in the yard, eventually departing for Avonmouth, 66055 returned later with the Tyne Yard "Boxes". Other workings noted were 60042 and 60091 with empty MGRs for Avonmouth, 60042 departing with a loaded train. 66124 worked from Avonmouth with a loaded car train, 66020 arrived in the yard with the Battersea stone train and 47292 powered the Felixstowe liner. Noted with a VT ECS train was 47741 heading north. There was no sight of the Binliner this evening, although it was noted at 15.30 at Barrow Road, and from other sources would have appeared to have failed on returning to Bath.

29/03 Coal trains noted this evening were 66003 and 60016 heading east with loaded MGRs and 60052 towards Avonmouth with empties. Other services were 66071 VGAs for Teeside and 47287 Felixstowe liner.

Cornwall

04/03 The following locomotives were present on St. Blazey depot 60077. 66140/235/248. 67009/013/019/021.

Portishead Branch

05/03 66185 arrived on the up relief line at Malago 5 hours late with CWR for the branch. Due to a defective wagon (and late running) the train returned to Westbury, returning the next day for off-loading.

14/03 66194 + 66219 top n'tailed a ballast working from Parson's Street junction, concentrating on the up line of the branch. This track is to be retained as a passing loop but still remained unconnected at the Ashton end at the end of the month. The level crossing, once restored will only be for a single line instead of double.

19/03 66107 brought in a further welded rail train, the rails being for use on the Avon gorge side of the level crossing. By the end of the month track side cable laying had started and fencing was beginning to appear between Ashton and into the gorge. Replacement track work had reached a point between Ashton level crossing and the former Clifton Bridge station site. Original track work still remained between the Clifton Bridge station site and the Portishead side of Clifton No.2 tunnel, as well as between Pill and the end of the branch. All the rest has been lifted and recovered by the road/railers being broken up at Ashton. A bridge has been demolished near Clifton No.2 tunnel and an embankment rebuilt in Leigh Woods. Access for road vehicles has been made near Ham Green tunnel which was flooded at the beginning of the month, and the track work through the tunnel once re-laid will be lowered to accommodate 9ft 6in containers from the dock. Contractors Jarvis are dealing with the permanent way and track relaying, McAlpine the tunnels and bridges and Bovis are currently working on the 1.2 mile connection into the dock on an embankment. This work is being carried out on behalf of the Port of Bristol Authority as the actual boundary between the PBA and Railtrack will be at the new junction. A pedestrian underbridge is being built at this location for the cyclepath which connects Pill with Shirehampton via the M5 road over-bridge.

Severn Beach Line

07/03 58041 was used for route learning via Filton and Clifton.

Thingley Junction near Chippenham

07/03 66001 was present during the morning with continental ferryvans containing rail for CWR use.

15/03 58019 was present during the day with a rake of Stumec wagons.

This site is to be used for the next three years as a cwr depot.

Weston-super-Mare

Weekend track replacement work at Worle has seen the following locomotives, 66143 (11/03), 66144 (18/03) and 66061 (25/03) all on ballast work. Road/rail plant recorded, Hughes excavators 746/747. M738PAN (723). An unidentified caterpillar bulldozer has also seen use.

Avon to Calvert Binliner

This month's sightings are as follows:

The final EWS operated Binliner was on the 30/03 with Freightliner taking over the contract from Monday 2nd April. From this date the Westerleigh portion will no longer run.

15/03 56073 worked off Godfrey Road and headed west. The loco has been fitted with red tail lights consisting of multiple LEDs, similar to those on Turbostars. These give a brighter light and avoids it being taken out of service in the event of one bulb failing. 60018 took BP tanks east.

19/03 60032/058/098, 66045 were at Godfrey Road.

22/03 A single car DMU was in Platform 1 at 08:30 numbered 9778559 and carrying a unit number 960011. It was in lime green and blue livery and carried the words Omni Surveyor 3 - Balfour Beatty working with Railtrack. The unit was fitted with intense floodlights below each buffer, illuminating the railhead, and had video cameras aligned on each rail and another in the cab. Power was being supplied by an on-board generator, which could be heard running in the centre of the unit. Television monitors could be seen inside, relaying pictures of the track and the line ahead. 09105, 37412/428, 66052/055/156/162 visited Godfrey Road.

01/03 An unidentified Virgin Voyager unit was noted on the Monk Bretton line undergoing testing from the Bombardier commissioning depot at Crofton. 458021/27 were noted at Didcot yard en-route to Eastleigh Works.

09/03 Jumbo Challenger arrived at Newport Docks. Three 66/7s were unloaded by 17:00 and the remaining four followed later that evening. 37419 was on the quayside acting as shunter for the unloading operations.

10/03 All seven 66/7s were on the quayside with their tarpaulins removed.

12/03 The seven 66/7's moved in a single convey from the docks to ADJ yard, arriving at 21:00. They then stabled at the Cardiff end of the yard overnight.

13/03 The seven 66/7s were noted in ADJ yard at 07:15. At 10:30, 67705 hauled 67706/703/704/701 as 0Z49 ADJ-Willesden. The convoy passed Bristol Parkway at 11:05, Didcot 12:30 and arrived at Willesden via Acton at 14:00.

14/03 67702 hauled 66707 as 0Z49 09:46 ADJ-Willesden, departing 18 minutes early.

26/03 The first MML 170/1 centre cars, 55101, was out on test from Litchurch Lane formed in the middle of a Turbostar numbered 170399.

30/03 220001 was noted at York in a siding.

PRESERVATION & INDUSTRIAL MATTERS

West Somerset Railway 17/03/01

4936 Kinlet Hall worked a Pastime Rail special 1Z43 07.25 Paddington-Minehead (from Didcot), via Westbury and Frome (water stop). The loco was later joined by 5029 Nunney Castle (See Bristol Notes & News). These two locos were to take part in the WSR steam gala the following weekend with other visiting loos, as well as a visit to Penzance on the mainline in early April.
